Clemson, Georgia Tech to play at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2020 season
Georgia Tech and Chick-fil-A Bowl officials are expected to announce at a 2 p.m. news conference Tuesday that the Yellow Jackets will play multiple games at the 71,000-seat facility over the next several years, including a game against Clemson during the 2020 season

How do GT fans feel about this setup? I think its a cool/different experience, but it has some obvious downsides as well.

Clemson fans making it a home game is one of them.

FIFY. Brett McMurphy originally reported the 2020 Clemson/GT game would be played at Mercedes Benz Stadium and be televised on either ESPN or ABC, but due to a rare mistake he pulled that tweet... it's really 2022 that they play in this stadium.

As a Clemson fan, I like it also. After you subtract all of the GT season ticket holders, there are still a whole lot of seats remaining for the game. I'm guessing that 20K+ more Clemson fans will attend this game than would if it were played on Grant Field.

It's a cash grab by the GTAA. The GTAA cleared something like $2.35m from the game against Tennessee. The GTAA wiped out the reserve fund paying for Collins and his staff. This is a quick way to replenish that fund and provide additional income. I imagine if Todd Stansbury is a clever boy he's also paying close attention to WHERE the demand is on the GT side to see how any future renovated/overhauled Bobby Dodd Stadium should be allocated in terms of premium seating.

Saw in the AJC today that premium seating at MBS is a major reason for the financial disparity. There is a waiting list for premium seating at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Needless to say there's no shortage of suites at MBS.

Maybe my big fat wet dream of a new Bobby Dodd Stadium is in the very early planning stages after all. I just hope it has the attention to detail and completeness and boldness in vision that it deserves. I'd personally like a building enclosed two deck horseshoe with several tiers of box seating in between the decks. And a cantilevered canopy to trap noise and shade the home sideline.

I don't know GTS. If it hasn't happened by now, I'm not sure it ever will at the current location. Another location on campus might be needed since the city of Atlanta is preventing Tech from taking the necessary actions for a proper renovation to occur.

They can fit a new proper two deck horseshoe on the current site. But they have to be committed enough to it to be willing to pay to replace four other buildings along with it: the Edge Center (home of the GTAA) which is in the NE endzone corner, the Bill Moore Student Success Center (academic support) which is joined into the back of the west stands, the Wardlaw Building that's part of the South Endzone, and Emerson/Lyman Hall (Bursar's Office) which is shoe horned into the gap between Tech Tower, the old power plant, and BDS behind the west stands.

There is enough room if you clear ALL that out. You'll back up to Tech Tower and right up to Techwood Drive. You're using all the E/W real estate you got. Happily there is a surplus of N/S real estate on the footprint ... so this is why I suggest a horseshoe that is building enclosed. You make up the lost space by building a substantial amount of new square footage in that building. You can even build the enclosure building (or at least most of it) without closing BDS beyond the South Endzone.

I'm tellin' ya ... it CAN be done if you're willing to shuffle around 4 somewhat small buildings that have grown into the stadium itself over the years. Yes, it would be so much easier to just build OVER Techwood Drive. But the city of Atlanta won't allow that. The only other alternative would be gobbling up several blocks of Home Park. We're talking about more than 4 dozen houses. And nearly all of Home Park that is interstate frontage is already gobbled up now by Turner Broadcasting and new post-graduate dorms GT put in.

Whether or not Todd Stansbury is willing to be as bold and visionary as I am probably depends entirely upon just how strong that premium seating demand is. I suspect Todd will know exactly how strong the demand is by the end of this 5 game MBS series.

I don't think moving everything 60 west solves the access issues with the east stands. In fact by moving closer to Tech Tower you end up creating the same pedestrian flow problems on the west stands as well.

You *already* have that problem. There are effectively three gates to the West Stands and only two are for actual outdoor seats. You can't break that one any further it's already right proper screwed. Due to interstate flow considerations, I'd say half the stadium already walks across the connector to get back on I-85N or walks to MARTA North Avenue to exfiltrate to MARTA "park and ride" stations closer to the perimeter. Most of the foot traffic pressure is in the north endzone due to this flow. That's why they put the ticket window there and the new outside jumbotron and the player walk happens that way too.
