ISU’s strength is their running game. We happen to have the best interior defensive line in school history right now. Yeah so something is going to have to give. Oh and our linebackers are decent too.

Wasn't there a comment about NIU not being used to playing the level of defense they have? LOL

I just don’t understand the arrogance. When we talk about power 5 teams like Utah, Iowa, and Nebraska we at least give plenty of respect to them. That it would take a huge effort to beat them, etc, etc. but ISU fans are acting like this will be a walk in the park and that we have no business stepping on the field with them. We will find out at the end of the month

They do have a few valid non-football points on their board. But they are outnumbered by those delusional fans championing themselves as a football juggernaut. It's like everyone on their board got drunk and started posting. 04-drinky

I do hope they "pond the Illini" in 2020.

03-lmfao

"I do believe the ISU has a more talented squad in all the skill positions and depth. A big win will get an invite to the MAC. In 2020 , Davis will be at his best and the o-line will be big and seasoned. If ISU ponds the illni into the turf, would CUSA or AAC invite ISU as well?"

I looked at ISU's board and the thing that gets me the most is that they constantly trash NIU's football facilities and program. The fact is that NIU's football facilities are massively better than ISU's facilities. Here are some facts:

Huskie Stadium seats 28,000 plus. Hancock Stadium seats 13,400.
The Yordon Center is 62,000 square feet, ISU's Kaufman Football Building is 16,000 square feet.
The Yordon Center weight room and training room is 16,000 square feet. ISU's Owen Strength and Conditioning Center is 9,200 square feet.
NIU's Chessick Practice Center is 80,600 square feet with a 120 yard long indoor practice facility and a 65 foot tall ceiling for kickoff, punt and field goal practice. ISU has no indoor practice facility.
NIU has the Northwesten Medicine Performance and Sports Nutrition Center. ISU has no performance or sports nutrition center.
NIU has the 6,500 square foot Barsema Hall of Champions to display its football trophies. ISU has no similar facility.
NIU has the 37,000 square foot Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center to host pre and post game football events. ISU has no similar facility.

As a member of the MAC, NIU is part of the MAC's 130 million TV deal with ESPN. The contract guarantees that every game will be televised and or live streamed nationally.
As part of the MAC deal, ESPN would also pay for a state of the art video recording and production facility at each MAC school.
The ESPN MAC deal also includes bowl slots for the MAC.

ISU is a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Their 2018 football deal includes "The Missouri Valley Football Conference will have more than 50 events on ESPN’s networks during the 2018 season, Commissioner Patty Viverito has announced. The Conference will produce eight league games as part of its 2018 Game of the Week package, with each streaming live on “Valley Football on ESPN” -- the league's co-branded digital network." I am unable to find how much the TV deal is worth.
https://valley-football.org/news/2018/8/...h=football

Now, who has better facilities, more national exposure, every game televised and makes some money off of their TV deal?

What I don't understand is the over the top slamming of both universities by anyone. My wife went to ISU for her undergraduate degree and Masters degree in Poly Sci but then attended NIU for her PhD (which ISU doesn't have). The reason I attended NIU was because my wife got into NIU's PhD program. Ultimately, we both received first class educations from both NIU and ISU and have gone onto very successful careers. Both football programs have been very successful at their own level. The reality is the Illinois State government is to blame for the recent problems with Illinois universities. In my opinion, dumping on each other is essentially fratricide.

It is weird, but I think it shows how much of a rivalry this game can be. When I was in college some of my high school buddies went to ISU and we would always wonder why the two schools never met on basketball or football. We'd often compare the schools and realized the two schools probably have more in common than not. ISU probably has a nicer campus, and if you ever said anything bad about the "Quad" they would have had an aneurysm. College of Business and College of Education are neck and neck, and I think NIU's post graduate programs are better. ISU has no law school or engineering and offers very few doctoral programs.

The 90s and early 2000s NIU beat ISU in enrollment pretty easily. NIU had so many students my freshmen year that they had students living in the Holmes hotel. That number has seemed to flip recently. I do think that enrollment can be cyclical and when NIU stabilizes the declining enrollment, they eventually become even if not higher than ISU again.

Honestly, if we were in the same conference as ISU, it would be our biggest rival by far. They are similar in size, academics and the closest state school outside of Chicago. We even have a shared history. A yearly match-up with the Redbirds would be more meaningful than Toledo.

I think most of the fans there are grounded to reality but biased (just as we are). Most of the noise is coming from our not so friendly recurring troll.

They basically have one guy stirring everything up there. He was even called out for it. He's the same idiot that constantly comes here stirring the pot until he is eventually booted.

It'll be a fun game to watch. Just don't see the need for trashing the universities and facilities when it's totally uncalled for. We're proud--blue collar work ethic--Midwesterners that don't need to be disparaging one another.

You have to wonder what happens in someone's life when they decide to devote that much time and energy to being an ISU troll. There are modern medicines and treatments for those conditions.

No thanks to any in-state rivalries outside of Champaign or Evanston. It would be nice of those schools manned up and scheduled us regularly, every 5 years or so at least. P*ssies.

Couldn't ISU, WIU, SIU, EIU say that about us. Personally, I prefer scheduling one of these teams. More local interest which would mean more butts in the seats.

One difference is that, like NU and Illinois, NIU is FBS. And, NIU is one school. For us to play WIU, EIU, SIU, and Illinois State, would keep us quite busy.

NIU does a decent job of always having one of the in-state smaller programs (WIU, EIU, SIU, ISU) on our recent schedules somewhere, whereas U of I and Northwestern host a constant flow of "G5" schools from other states while the better-drawing NIU is rarely invited into their stadiums. NU and U of I collectively play Akron, Eastern Michigan, UConn, UNLV and UMass this year alone. We host Illinois State this year, hosted Eastern Illinois 2 years ago, and Western Illinois 3 years ago.

https://fbschedules.com/ncaa/northern-illinois/

We have several more Illinois-FCS programs coming to Dekalb in the next 7-8 years as well, yet in the meantime we have nothing on the books in the foreseeable future with U of I, or NU, both driving distance and arguably comparable in quality most seasons.

NIU has "nothing to gain/everything to lose" playing EIU, but we schedule them over available out of state FCS teams anyway. Spineless NU and U of I would rather schedule a Sun Belt team and their 379 traveling fans then risk NIU "upsetting" them in their precious Pig10 stadiums. A p*ssy is as a p*ssy does.
