Millennials Can't Even Lick A Stamp
Quote:Millennials are postal illiterates.

They’re so befuddled by the process of mailing an envelope that they don’t even know where to put the stamp and the address, according to Canada’s North Delta Reporter.

“Anyone under 30 basically doesn’t know how to address a letter,” says Julie Vanmale, an employee at the Salmon Arms main post office.

Granted, this is in Canada, and it’s anecdotal. But it rings true — simple skills like those are going the way of penmanship and the once-general ability to read music.

Blame our education systems if you must, but it shows again that people under 30, while charmed by postal mail and other artifacts of our civilization, have moved online — totally.

And this is bad for the U.S. Postal Service, although its recent $1.5 billion deficit is probably less due to declining use by millennials than to the insane financial structure it labors under, thanks to Congress.

But it’s nothing to be smug about. With Gmail itself composing emails, basic email writing skills may also disappear in time.

Which brings us to what it means for our own little piece of the world. A study by Pure360 shows that 59% of millennials favor email over other channels.

Predictably, over 70% Boomers and Generation X feel the same way. Email comes out pretty well overall — way over direct mail.

There was no ambiguity about the question. The survey asked: “Imagine you’ve made a purchase from a brand/company. How would you like them to send you messages alter you have made your purchase?”

Some of this flies in the face of stereotypes. Falling below email in terms of millennial preference are:

Social media — 20%
Online — e.g., banner advertisements — 19%
Text message — 18%
Post — 18%
Messenger app (e.g. Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp) — 16%
Phone — 13%
Face-to-face — 11%

In contrast, only 3% of boomers prefer face-to-face meetings and 2% prefer he phone. But 34% like postal mail, showing there’s life in the old medium yet.

Despite all that, email may well fall in future surveys. As Pure360 observes, millennials increasingly prefer “shorter preference formats like text messages and messenger apps compared to emails.”

And the question remains: Who qualifies as a millennial? Does that include 40-year-olds approaching the fringes of Generation X? According to USA Today, there’s a new micro group: Xennials — those who fall in between.

I really wish that we broke millennials down into subgroups. I’m in my 30s and considered a millennial, yet my life experience (and those of everyone I know that’s around my age) is nothing like what gets made fun of when it comes to the stereotypical millennial.

That's because you've been around more and not just pent up in a parents basement. A person getting out of the military has MORE experience in life than even someone who's much older that never wore the uniform. Some people in the military have even been IN CHARGE in life saving actions and of million dollar equipment in their teens and early twenties.

But, you're right we need a tag for people like you. Let's start it here.

Suggestions?

Me first: Not Stupid Millennials. MSNs

Same here.

I can tell you exactly when millennial's started getting a bad name. At least in NM.

In high school, I graduated in 0'5. When I was a junior (0'3-0'4) the class of 0'7 whined and complained and their parents whined and complained so much about the English curriculum, that it was completely changed two months into the school year. They tried doing the same thing the following year with math, but the administration didn't budge.

I remember a friend of mine's sister gloating about it to us. Say how special she was. 01-wingedeagle

Your anecdotal experience explains how millennials are both spoiled (whine to get their way)...and stupid (dumbed down curriculum).

I’m in the same boat.

Side thought too, I think it’s funny how millennials get ragged on (rightfully so usually) while boomers have been ******* things up for years now.

Boomers for a large part suck.
They have F'd up this country as hippies in the 60s and even more so once they were the generation at the reigns.
Millennials are the children of Boomers.
No one should be surprised that a generation that sucked has raised the next sucky generation.

I'm 53.5. We seem to have had the same experiences with Boomers.
For the most part I think they are spoiled entitled idiots. The stoner flower children from the 60s never grew up and don't understand economics or business.

RE: Millennials Can't Even Lick A Stamp
Stamps.com on Thursday sent out a press release saying they were ending their exclusive relationship with the post office. Meanwhile, their stock is down 50 percent. I guess they're trying to say they want in on the e-commerce business, and can hope they can get some cookies tossed their way from Amazon, UPS and FedEx. But their web site is stamps.com, not shipping.com. Makes zero sense.

I was reared in catholic elevator music land....

it didn't matter....the collective didn't have a fk'n clue....the USD was scarce and the mind controlling mechanism was in full fk'n force....the one's that did simply raped and pillaged as allowed....

as a single soul w/o a back pocket and knowledge, how does one combat such?

at least pops doesn't accuse me of being a pessimist anymore....

one soul can only do so much unless it's name is hey-zeus....that'll get some of the nickels...

I turned 54 this month, my sister turned 57. The cultural differences between us are amazing.

Every generation thinks it's better than previous ones. When you're old you'll get blamed for everything too.

I was on a mission trip with some 17 year old high school students. One of the things we were challenged to do is write a letter to ourselves and mail it home. They wrote the letter but didn't have a clue how to address the envelope. It was probably the first time in their lives they ever wrote a letter. Who knows when the next one will be

I was told recently that some people consider Generation X as those born between 1961 and 1981. I'm a 1964 birth and I always thought I was the last of the Baby Boomers, but apparently some demographers want to put me into Generation X. I'd rather remain a Boomer, thank you very much.

I'm 44.5, which puts me in the latter half of GenX, but still solidly in the generation. I too see how the Boomers fvcked everything up too. Unfortunately for us, we're the smallest generation sandwiched between 2 larger ones. We truly are screwed - and constantly get no respect. If the generation immediately after the GI Gen were truly "Silent" - we are the forgotten generation. Hell, we didn't even get a name! Millennials used to be 'GenY'. No doubt GenZ will be renamed in a bit too.

Boomers were indeed spoiled idiots - or they had a high percentage of them. Millennials have a high percentage of spoiled idiots too. We used to be known as the slacker generation; however, we actually turned out pretty damn well on balance.
