Rice vs. UCI, Game 2 (Saturday)
Stepping into the bucket on each pitch he saw, Trei Cruz strikes out to end B1.

(I missed most of the scoreless T1 ... but Kravetz K'd all three outs. UCI apparently had a hit and ... as I tuned in ... a throw to second went into the outfield and the runner took third ... but the final K -- on a lovely slider that froze the Anteater's Brooks (who hit two HRs last night) -- prevented any score.)

0-0, after 1.

T2 ... No runs, but some drama.

The 3rd strike to the first Anteater was dropped at the plate. Collins stepped to his right to make a calm, deliberate throw to first ... but it was high and wide! D-Caprio snagged it and dived to touch the bag just before the batter got there. Whew!!

Then a walk.

The next two batters then hit the ball long and hard ... but 1) right at Cox in deep left and 2) within range of Gneiting in deep right center. Whew.

Scoreless, heading to B2.

B2:

Collins rolls a one-out single through the left-side hole.

Edwards flew out to deep center. (Nice catch: over his head and back to the plate.)

Frazier walks on an 3-2 pitch just inside. (He had another good take on a neck-high 2-1 fastball.)

Beaulaurier hit a bouncing ball right at the 3rd baseman, who trotted to the bag for the inning-ending forceout.

No score after 2.

T3:

1-out walk.

"A high popup ..." Cox merely turns around to watch it soar over the left field fence and beyond the hill. Ouch!!!

0-2. Grrr.

Walk followed by HR. I wish the Owls would make pitchers pay for walks.

Followed by a solo shot. 3-0 UCI still batting.

T3, con'td:

Arrrgh!!

Kravitz' 5th K was the second out.

Next he took Brooks to 3-2 ... and then two fouled balls ... before the UCI slugger blasted a homerun just over the fence in deep center.

F-4 popup ends the inning.

0-3, heading to B3.

(Ladies tip off in Denton in 5 min.)

Cox flies out to center.

Comeaux hit on his upper left arm by an errant curve ball.

Owls with 1 hit thru 5 innings. 3-0 UCI going to T6.

On a positive note, only 2 Owl Ks thru 5.

I think it's a combination of:
1. Not much good to talk about in the baseball game
2. Plus the competition of a key Women's Basketball game at the same time.

Frankly, I find it harder every year to motivate myself to attend Rice baseball games. I've had season tickets since the 2001 season and will continue to buy them for the foreseeable future, but until we can field a viable team, I'm going to find other things to do that don't require $5 for parking. Sigh.

45 runs given up in the past 4 games is horrible! I hope this team has some fight in them because at the moment it doesn’t show one bit.

Baseball is not this hard! Time to pick it up OWLS
