RE: Rice vs UCI game 1
Rashi is their closer. He has pretty good stats - 2 saves, 2 IP, 0 H, 5 K's - entering this game. But hopefully 2.1 innings is a bit longer than they want to use him for.

Now 15 Ks. 1 out in B8.
UCI has 11 Ks thru 8 innings. Unfortunately, they also have 3 HRs.

Comeaux grounds out to end B8.
Need some magic in B9... Hopefully Rashi gets tired.

Esquivel allows a run in T9.
We are just a bad baseball team.

I wouldn't have yanked Jefferies. I don't think we're bad (maybe just average) We're just not capable of beating good teams unless we play perfect baseball (which we haven't shown the ability to do yet).

If by average you mean ~150 in RPI, yeah, maybe...
If by average you mean average in C-USA, nope.

Now 9-5 as Plum continues the implosion. So, so ridiculous.

Double steal makes it 10-5.
RBI single makes it 11-5.
Wow. Not impressed

Wow. A chance to get out of the inning and Cruz makes an error.
Not good, not good at all.

Seventeen strikeouts by Rice hitters. Yikes.
11-5 final.

Rice was nuts to schedule three top 25 teams in one week.

Yup, Rice still schedules like it’s the mid-2000’s when we’re a mid tier C-USA squad at best.

Well football will be rough as well. But I agree. Also think it would be helpful to go on the road for a series. MM doesn’t count.

The real problem is that we failed to maintain our program properly.
I mean, yeah, facing UT, Arizona, and UCI is kinda rough sledding in a week. But we shouldn't be this putrid at this point. The landscape shifted against us, but we started to realize that, what, maybe a decade ago after the postseason nightmares against LSU?

RE: Rice vs UCI game 1
Yes, Canterino struggled because he lacked his usual pin point control and, yes, we struck out 18 times, which is totally unacceptable, but thanks to Jackson Tyner's outstanding relief effort we were in this game-- down only one run-- heading into the 9th inning. Why in the world did Bragga decide to take out our best and most reliable relief pitcher (Jefferies) after just one inning of work when UC-I was sending up the heart of their batting order? Sorry, that move made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I'm wondering why he pulled Tyner out.

We still have people on this board who think Wayne should’ve coached until he decided to quit. We’ve ignored the fact that our program has slipped for 7 or 8 years. One upset win in 2013 at Oregon probably gave some hope and the run 2 years ago in the conference tournament delayed the inevitable. Anyone watching the program saw our talent level dropping significantly and we didn’t do anything about it.
Going to be an ugly couple years as the 9th or 10th best team in the state. It all starts with recruiting.

That's not a surprise at all. It was by far his longest outing of his Rice career. And just as with Kravetz last Saturday, you want him to come out feeling confident. Jefferies was very well rested, having not pitched since last Friday, and was ready to go. I'd love to hear Bragga's explanation for taking him out in the ninth in a one-run game, with the heart of UC-I's order due up. It was not hard to predict what was about to happen.
Having said all that, I'm still bewildered how we didn't even make a close play at the plate out of that two-out single by UC-I with a man on 2B, two outs, in a one-run game. The ball was hit sharpley to LF and fielded cleanly by A.Cruz. He should have had the runner by a couple feet. Yet the throw was way up the 3B line and nowhere near home plate. Don't we have a single OFer who has a semblance of an arm outside Dunlap? That was plain embarrassing.
