All those things taken into consideration plus the fact that he's a helluva recruiter, extremely organized and clearly can X and o, I'd give the guy an A.

In every game, he looked like he belonged when compared to other coaches and peers. And some of those coaches are really high level, experienced guys.

I think he's been a pleasent surprise with his ability to actually coach. He's been really good.

Great summary - my thoughts exactly.

I just Count up the ways Penny has lived up to-or beyond-expectations.
No brainer. This has been one of those pivotal moments in the recent history of our program.
“A”.

RE: Penny's Grade
Penny has done an awesome job his first year. Couldn’t expect anything more. Most people would have been elated at the beginning of the year knowing we would be going to the NIT.

Not only that, Penny is so sincere and honest. He absolutely loves his home town and team and they love him! He is the perfect person for the job. We are in the best hands imaginable.

I couldn’t be prouder to be a Tiger fan with Penny at the helm!!

GTG!!!!

Yep. Penny gets an A for his coaching. Aside from Martin, he's taken a team of raw freshmen and junior college Tubby recruits and taken them to the post season and even to the cusp of an NCAA bid. Anyone who can't see how much most of those guys improved from start of season to end of season, and how he and his assistant coach's game planning won some of those games is just not paying attention.

What did you guys grade Tubby last year for coaching?

Not recruiting...Only in season coaching

Last year is like that one semester of college I try to forget. Maybe a C-. He can coach when he decides to.

Rather, I'll project this:how many games would Tubby have won this season, with this schedule, with Nickelberry and Jamal, without Harris, Jones, and Lomax?

Short answer is less than 21, and no chance of a postseason tournament.

Tubby literally sat on his ass and did nothing. The one decent player he did recruit in Jamal Johnson fled.

The fact that Penny took Martin, some decent but not great freshman (who will be solid 4 year players eventually), and whatever else was left on this roster and mashed it into a 21 win team is nothing short of amazing.

Good post Tiger Tim. Totally agree.

Penny's Grade
somehow Penny still wrung 21 wins out of this team and stayed very competitive and in a position to win a few games against ranked teams. All that was buying into Penny’s system and just raw energy, hustle and work. Add some more talent, rinse and repeat. Can’t wait until next season already. But excited for post season too.

The naysayers are seriously overlooking the roster that was left. 4 JUCOs who NEVER would have been offered by Calipari, Pastner, or Penny. These are the same guys who laid down last year and got beat by two sub 300 teams.

These players were pushed more than they ever had been, actually got better, played a much, much tougher schedule, and are probably only 1 game away from an NCAA bid.

#6 recruiting class coming in (and not done yet). Actual talent that will complement our 5'7 guard that can shoot lights out when open.

Penny gets an A from me. Anything else, you're just a Negative Nelly looking for something to ***** about.

RE: Penny's Grade
I have always thought Tubby an excellent coach. I saw him up close in a couple games when he was at UGa and he was awesome. I think he really knows basketball and is a great X and Os floor coach. That said, I think that Penny was better. I think that the on court product was better this year than both Tubby years, including X’s and O’s and in-game adjustments. My only complaint this year was execution off in-bounds passes.

RE: Penny's Grade
now that the season is over..and we're about to play in the NIT...
I'm going to revise Penny's grade to an A-.

There were a couple of times he shoulda kept some things to himself maybe...is my only beef.
Coaching got better.
He got everything he could out of the talent he had on hand...and that's all you can ask for.
Next year...we're going to have some more growing pains...not just from the freshmen...but from some of the guys who were freshmen this year.
We're going to need someone to step up and be the vocal leader the team needs.
Not sure if we have that in next year's team yet.
