Overall, the result is fine. Plenty of good teams will go into Starkville and look much worse than we did. And the thing is, we didn't play particularly well. Aaron Fitt even said that he thought we played "quite poorly this weekend."
You have to consider the competition but if our lineup looks similar to this in April, that will not be a good thing. I still like our 1-4 a lot. But after that, it is concerning. Cooper and Franklin had big hits today....but I don't think either (and definitely not Cooper) is a viable option in the long run. Unless Franklin can get on base a couple of times a game, his speed isn't worth the lack of average or power and the strikeouts. Also, Wallner needs to be hitting between Guidry and Slater. No one is going to pitch to him with Donaldson following.
The pitching was better than anyone could have hoped for against a really potent, experienced lineup. Bullpen was really promising. Och takes the loss but I think he could be our best left-handed arm in a while. Jackson flashed some good stuff at times last year, too. If he has put things together (was damn good today), that gives us a couple of good left-handers out of the pen, which is something we rarely have. Keys will probably up and down, as usual. And Carroll was pretty good today.

Wallner wont see a pitch all year with Donaldson behind him. Donaldson?! Hopefully once Blaylock is healthy he will be in the 5 spot. I would put Wallner in the 3 hole and Slater at 4 otherwise. Either way, Wallner needs to start living up to the hype. Once he gets healed enough to start regularly in RF, maybe his bat will settle in. Overall...this lineup is as bad as I can ever remember. Pitching has been much better than I anticipated at least. We need some help in the field as well. Also the weakest I remember.

RE: Baseball vs Mississippi State
Wallner going 0-10 after talking **** is just so Southern Miss. Anyone that’s been following this program for more than a day could have seen that coming 1,000 miles away. Always bank on the stupidest and most absurd things happening to USM.
Our defense is just so bad. Cost us the regional in 2017 and cost us this series. But that’s kinda our recruiting style. Recruit bombers and worry about defense later. I was crowing all last year about how Guidry is underrated defensively but he’s off to a terrible start in 2019. Franklin let a ball drop in front of him because he can’t judge the damn wind. Then you had the ball in I think the 2nd where 3 guys let it drop in front of them. That led to a run. If LeBlanc didn’t catch that ball from Mangum in the 9th (and it almost happened), that’s probably an inside in the park homer. Then Cooper can’t handle a routine grounder which cost us the game.
Pitching was amazing this weekend aside from Powers and maybe Strickland though his defense let him down some. Carroll got out a colossal jam that kept us in it. Jackson threw it well. Even thought Keys was solid. Their gun had him in the 91-95 range. Och needs to move to Saturday. Powers can’t get it done against the big boys.
Our lineup just couldn’t do anything against any of their guys all weekend except Self. I’m guessing that’s what it feels like to root for teams like ULL that have had ineffective offenses over the last several years. We need a major shakeup there. Blaylock to CF (when he’s healthy) instead of Franklin. I’m gutted for him that he couldn’t play in this series. Franklin actually got a big hit today, but has zero power and I’m not convinced he can do much offensively. Cooper has to go ASAP. McGillis doesn’t have great hands, but he’s really athletic and has a big arm. And he should bring much a better bat to the table. This won’t happen, but Guidry should maybe move to DH and Fischer to 2nd. Wallner will be fine probably, MSU is just in his head at this point.
Obviously, this one isn’t on the level of 2011 and 2017 but it stings a lot (they showed the 2017 regional on the video board as part of a “blast from the past” segment — argh). If we make some tweaks, we can be a solid regional team. I don’t see CUSA presenting much of a problem for us at all.

Agree. Wish we could have gotten the bats going, could have taken two! Still early and with some lineup adjustment we should be top of the conference. Time for some fielding and batting practice!

RE: Baseball vs Mississippi State
I was very impressed with our bullpen. Time will tell whether Ostrander has them where they need to be or State is a subpar hitting team. I’m leaning toward the first of those two options. Has Blalock’s return to the the lineup been mentioned? With him bring out, the bottom of our lineup becomes borderline atrocious. Couple that with Wallner going ice cold and elite pitching and you get this weekend’s results. Good thing we won’t face another staff like that until the Baton Rouge (or Oxford, Fayetteville, etc.) regional where we will undoubtedly go 1-2.

So Cooper can't hit and then makes a huge error.
He can't be the best available who can play shortstop

If we just make very routine plays, we are at least 5-1. The question is...can we?

you ol' coots got me by 20....
the errors to date in the infield have been atrotous...I can't fault the two sun/wind fly balls, but Franklin should've thrown to second both times (he gave up second base that cost runs)

I know you love to troll, but I wouldn’t talk like this when OM still has to play them.
