Concerning Little Rock soccer
We just released the spring schedule, which has four home games, beginning 27 Feb.

We have three Icelandic players on the roster. You might have noticed that all the Icelanders' surnames names end in "dottir." As opposed to common practice in America, in Iceland each generation's surname is different, taken from the father's given name, and adding -son for sons or -dottir for daughters, as the case may be. We have one girl whose father was Johann, one Asgeir, and one Einar.

Probably a similar thing happened in the development of other languages. For example, we have a girl from Norway on the team named Camilla Olsson, but I am guessing that other members of the family would have the same surname. Somewhere back down the line a man was named Ole, and his children took the surname Olsson to differentiate them from others with a similar given name. The difference is that once the surname was developed, it continued unchanged from generation to generation, whereas in Iceland it changes each generation.

That is bound to make things hard on genealogists in Iceland. For example, you might walk into the genealogical room at the Fort Smith Library and take down a volume that someone had done on the Scrimgeour surname and research to your little heart's content. But in Iceland, if your name is Johannsdottir, that implies nothing concerning relationship, only that you both had a father named Johann.
