The last 10 minutes of the game most fans were all in on every possession, standing and being loud, that's what I was referring to. I had to convince my Navy friends to stay the whole game because they weren't feeling it, and told me the last few minutes made the whole thing worth it. I wasn't taking a jab at us the fans, I just felt the energy was a bit flat most of the game, and it could have come from the play on the court being a defensive slugfest for most of the game, I don't think that was an inaccurate observation

That is just how the TED is nowadays, unfortunately. There have been very few times where we get the crowd making noise during defensive plays in the first half (actually, I only remember one game, and it was when the 'group' section behind the basket was full).

Really, the TED crowd only gets into it after the under 4 min timeout when it's close. This is the new norm. Luckily the crowd was engaged earlier for this game. The crowd is still recovering from the 5 win season. It's trending up but it's still not like how it was back in 2010.

That's fair, and that's what I have come to understand since the 5-25 year. I guess my first 2 years at ODU spoiled me when we went to back-to-back NCAA's and the Ted was the best I've ever seen it. I really hope it gets back to it one day.

And hey, at least we regularly fill up the Ted, unlike some of our conference mates. If there is an opportunity to get loud, we get LOUD

And those 2 years didn't even compare to the Ted in the 04-07 timeframe with the jean vest guy, lines of drunk students forming and wrapping around the Ted 2 hours before the game, live concerts and bbqs outside, and baiting opposing coaches into technical (including getting Seth Greenburg tossed out of a game). 09-11 at the Ted were great relative to current crowds, but you have no idea what you missed. The atmosphere began tanking when Dr. Runte walked away and smartphones probably accelerated the process.

Greenberg gave me a middle finger during one of those Tech games (I believe it was the game he got tossed). It is one of my proudest accomplishments.

We must have been in the same area because I take credit for that as well! We were somewhere in the vicinity of the tunnel in section 115.

Here are a few reasons for the decline. Smartphones is a nationwide problem.

1. 5 win season, followed by 17 win season
2. Changing conferences and playing strangers from Texas and Florida
3. No national relevance in 8(?) years
4. Disbanding the monarch maniacs
5. Killing the f* em up chant
6. Getting rid of free "X" for whenever the team wins with "Y" points
7. Putting a price on beer in the blue room

Well, there were 2 declines.

The one I am talking about was between 06-07 and 09-10. Reasons, IMO, were smartphones, Runte departing and her concerts, halftime entertainment and real contests, and bbqs, and jean vest guy and his posse of about 100 in the front rows graduating. Killing the f* em up chant also fits in this period.

BTW, speaking of halftime entertainment, Red Panda, who used to perform at the Ted all the time, not only performed at the UNC/Duke game last week, but got an entire interview and segment on that game during the broadcast. Apparently she is all over the NBA as well so I doubt we could afford her anymore, but pretty cool she was here earlier in her career.

You provide explanations for the second decline, after Baze graduated.

FYI! Red Panda was all over the NBA when she came to our place. Maybe she is even in more demand now but I saw her at several Paces games before she did her thing at the TED. It's a cool act.

Same thing with that one guy who wears 100 shirts and tosses them to the crowd. He's been in a lot of professional arenas as well

Somehow, despite me going to nearly all the games I was a student from 05-09 I don't remember any of that. I guess my brain capacity was pretty messed up back then. I do remember that if you wanted to go to a game you had to show up early. (edited to make the quote text shorter)

EverRespect: I can't imagine what it was like then. TBH the first and second year I was at ODU it was similar but I can imagine nothing like what it was. You still had to pick up physical tickets for those games, now they are electronically deposited on your student ID. I still have all my ticket stubs from Men's and Women's game I attended before I cheered, me and my friend kept them as a sense of pride. I remember getting to the stadium hours in advance so I could secure my front row seat, and arriving at the Ted at 4am to secure my first row spot for the VCU game (it was a 2pm tipoff). Some games there were long lines behind us, others there weren't as long but there was always a sense of urgency from the students to make sure they got there early and often. I remember yapping at opposing benches, and having a player take exception to my friend Patrick but then realizing fighting a student was not worth his scholarship lol. If 2004-2007 was greater than those time, I sure as hell wish I could experience that.

odu09: That's a good list. I would add the electronic tickets as well, because students can get the tickets from their beds as opposed to trying to wait in line (I do think that builds a sense of pride to have to get up, walk to the Ted (or Webb) to wait in a line just to secure your ticket. Or maybe it was a double edged sword? People in general nowadays want things instantly, and it is much more convenient. Maybe if a student feels like they have to make it to the box office to pick up a ticket they wouldn't be as inclined to pick it up. Who knows?

#5 is personal for me haha, some people on this board don't like it but it was and still is a calling card for me and my alum friends from that era. I was at a tailgate for football in 2010, and there was a band playing in the backyard of the party of the tailgate house I was at. Right before they finished up, the drummer started hitting his drums in the same cadence of "f em up f em up ODU!" and everyone was chanting it. I still try to listen for it when I come to a basketball game but sadly it's not there anymore. If there is a current student who frequents games in the student section, I humbly request you to start leading that chant again haha

Not so fast! (Lee Corso Voice), "f em up" was during my time period too, but was totally killed off by the student exodus around the 5-25 year. At 5:40 in this video you can hear the student chanting it. This was from my freshman year VCU game in 09-10:

(this game is still one of my favorite sporting events I've ever attended, across college or professional and across all sports)

Memory must be serving me incorrectly. I thought that was earlier. I remember Blaine being on the scoreboard begging everyone not to chant it, but they did anyway. That went on for a whole season. Not sure what season it was, but it seems further back in my memories.

I feel like the crowd stormed the court several times in the 04-06 period as well, which did not happen in the later years. I definitely stormed at the Richmond Coliseum in March 2005 and I feel like there were a couple of games at the Ted as well. Not sure what kind of moment it would take today. We did not storm the court on the Freeman half-courter to get into the NIT Final 4 and that was the biggest moment at the Ted in the modern era. I was there with my then 7 year old son and remember hoping he would get to experience that.

RE: ODU vs WKU
Back further.

The old Sun Belt days. Gene “Cry Baby” Bartow was the coach at UAB. He is who their on campus arena is named for. We lost this game at Scope. But one of the greatest atmospheres ever. Ok best EVER at Scope but the Ted is better. Bartow had earned that knickname a long time before this incident.

School made a huge mistake putting the student section right behind the visiting bench. Super drunk frats all right behind the Blazers. Giving them incredible $hit the whole night. Early in the 2nd half several of the UAB players stormed our student section. Fights broke out. Pandemonium reigned supreme. Once order was restored USB took their timeouts at the foul line. Never saw that before. Students started up again and Bartow went to the refs. Paul Webb our coach went to the mike to quiet the crowd. It got real quiet. I was sitting 3 rows from the court 1 or 2 sections from the students. I stood up and yelled a chant “Cry baaaaby... Cry Baaaaby...” over and over again. About 1/2 the crowd started it and it echoed for like 2 or 3 minutes around Scope. Play was still stopped. Bartow looked towards where I was but have no idea if he connected who started it. But he sat down looking very disgusted. Student section went wild with laughter.

That was a great game. I was in pep band at the time so I wasn't allowed to say the chant nor could I because I was playing

This was the first ODU game I ever attended, as the new-in-town guest of a thoughtful coworker who thought that I might enjoy it.

I've been a fan ever since.
