Not completely unsurprising though...Michigan lost their top 4 players this season to the draft (Brazdiekas, Matthews, Poole, and Simpson), and the Asst. GM of the Cavs is Mike Gansey, who played under Beilein in his time at WVU. Add that to the fact that he was a finalist for the Pistons gig last summer, and it's clear that he was open to the opportunity.

… or the NCAA's about to come down on them.

It's not like Michigan hasn't gotten caught with their hand in the cookie jar before with an "aw shucks" nice old guy coach.

I'd be surprised if this was the case. Beilien runs a squeaky clean program. Seriously. His reputation is really good in that respect.

The GM at Cleveland is a former player for Beilien at WVU.

I wonder if UCLA'S coach Cronin will try to leave UCLA and claim Michigan was always his dream job. haha

While that would be funny, I think Michigan will be pursuing the type of candidate that turned UCLA down long before they offered Mick a job.

I thought we already filled our staff? I can't see us "unhiring" somebody at this point to make room. Even if we have a spot left, Pettway is a guy you have to budget for first, then pay the others with what's left. I'm assuming Brannen paid everybody he hired VERY well relative to their prior profile and prior salaries (if he's got the budget, why not give his assistants all he can?) In other words, at this point I doubt Brannon could still match his earlier offer to Pettway even if we still have a slot available.

Michigan is one of the few programs rich enough to poach a currently-successful coach from another P5 school in an outright bidding war. It doesn't need to take a chance on a mid major promotee.

Again, you'd be talking about moving the low man on the totem pole to ground level. I can't see Brannen doing it and even more critically: that ain't gonna free up anywhere near enough money to lure Pettway at this point.
