Mick would never be embraced by Los Angeles. It's just not a fit in any way shape or form. Though I do wonder what he'd do with all that talent.

1) Mick rejected them. If he'll reject programs in better shape than UCLA that are within driving distance of his daughter in Cincy, why would he go to UCLA?
OR
2) They didn't want him. if those schools didn't want Mick, why would hoity-toity UCLA consider him?
Add Indiana to that list. All are local, high-profile jobs and I didn't hear anything about him being considered for those jobs. I don't think UCLA would come calling for Mick either. That doesn't mean he's not a good coach, but he's not the kind of guy who will move the needle with those fan bases.

RE: College Hoops Coaching Carousel (2019)
if Mick starts making runs in the ncaa tourney...his name will be on more lists
Regular season titles are nice, but they aren't in the same stratosphere as being known for March runs.
it doesn't help that we are dominating a conference that is basically 2bid most years and seen as mid major.
You are listing high major jobs (IU, UCLA, UofL, etc.). Mick is seen as a solid coach that is dominating a less than P5 conference and has no March legacy. This is why his name isn't mentioned for IU, UofL, etc.

Yep, and they were not really coveted by the Pac 12 schools. Thus, i'd be curious if he continues to look for his "system" type guy, or revert to the path Alford failed with. Mick was very specific when we ran Ucla out of the gym back early in the year that Alford was like on his 4th pg in 5 years or something of that nature because of the guys he was getting and they weren't staying. Said it was tough to win anywhere with that kind of transition for the most part.

i don't think Cronin is a good fit at UCLA. Not a good place to raise Sammy. His dad and family live in Cincy. MICK is Staying.

I mean this respectfully, but Mick to UCLA is about as good a fit as Rick Pitino to Oral Roberts. Contrast in style, culture, and image. Kind of like wearing a striped tie with a plaid shirt.

I think most people thought the same thing when UCLA hired Alford (even though he was at New Mexico). He just didn't seem like a good fit. For that reason alone, I couldn't see UCLA going down the same path again.

I think they settled on Alford because they missed on some other guys they were interested in. It would not shock me if that happened again.

Here are a couple other factors to consider.
1) People are flocking out of California because of the extremely high income taxes, and going to Texas, Nevada, Arizona. He would almost need to be getting $6M plus to be able to afford the same lifestyle he currently has.
2) Sammy, Hep, Dan, and his sister are here. But mostly Sammy. I dont think his ex wife is going to get up and move with him.
3) Bad style and culture fit. Not saying Mick couldn't evolve some, but he has certain principles that he is not budging on that would probably clash with the Bruin faithful.
4) Mick owns horses here with his brother and other friends. As far as I know, other than Basketball and Sammy, horses are his only other interest.

Uh...what?

California's population growth has slowed from it's crazy 20th century growth, but it is still growing slightly faster than the average US State at 9% per year.

The only important note in the reasoning why we shouldn't be concerned about UCLA is that Luke Walton and Eric Musselman exist.

Depends on how you look at it. The population continues to grow because their birth rate far exceeds the death rate (by approx 200,000). And they attracted 185,000 immigrants in 2018. But according to a study in 2018, more people were leaving the state than moving into it.

This is from Forbes last year. California has the highest tax bracket in the country for millionaires and most intelligent billionaires are taking their money elsewhere instead of investing in failed state projects.

As a local, I can't speak on millionaires or billionaires but a lot of working professions have been leaving for other tech hubs around the country, usually due to the high cost of real estate. However, they are quickly replaced by new (typically younger) talent that are constantly moving in.

They've gained population overall because of international immigration.
But Americans are leaving California (and New York and Illinois). From 2010-2017, 550,000 more people left CA for other US states than moved into CA from the rest of the USA.

I think it also varies a lot by location. LA being a major area that people are fleeing:
Quote:It's no secret that California residents, particularly people residing in the most expensive parts of the state (SoCal, the Bay Area) are fleeing in droves, displaced by expensive rents, sky-high home prices, unbearable traffic congestion and - oh yeah - increasingly deadly wildfires...

Case in point. The Giants were unable to land Bryce Harper because of the extremely high California Tax Rate[/code]
