Hard pass on JT3. Like the guy personally, but he underachieved with alot of talent. Hos recruiting eventually slowed down his last 5 years.

Has anyone paid attention to Alabama's recruiting classes lately? I'm talking basketball, not even football. They've been reeling in loads of 4 and 5-star players.

It's bizarre, right? Look at Mississippi State as well. I know reliably (Sources) that they are engaging in illegal recruiting. I doubt Mick would play ball at somewhere like Alabama, he just doesn't get involved with that type of recruiting.

They are a Nike school. Just like LSU. Traditional basketball powers. I'm sure they operate above board.

I think it was 3-4 years ago but the schools in the SEC were told to up their game from conference brass after they only got a few teams in the NCAA tournament. This resulted in several firings and upgrades to coaching staffs. If you look at the USA Today data base of highest paid coaches the SEC guys have all leaped up the ranks.

Kind of interesting, Huggins' first interview after the final four year here was with Alabama. I think Huggy turned the Tide down.

When 'Bama announced the buy-out of Avery Johnson's contract, the immediate name that surfaced is Iowa State's Steve Prohm. I know that he issued the standard, "I'm happy at Iowa State and want to be here a long time..." statement, but it's curious not to see his name on the "list." (per "Sources")

I can't see Mick's connection or "fit" for Alabama. But, whatever.

Great hire.

I still love Buffalo's coach.

I like Oats too, but he is out of Tulanes league. He will most likely land at P5 school shortly.

yeah...I was more meaning Oats for us lol

I had the same thought.

I don't hate Mick, but if he moves on, I don't think we are screwed by any means. As long as he's consistently making the tournament, I'm not calling for his ouster. But I'm also not going to be devastated if he leaves.

That's where I'm at. I'm not saying fire him by any means. I just want to see some improvement in some areas. Namely when it comes to improving our recruiting/talent level/roster structure.

I don't advocate firing him, or forcing him out. He should receive a rolling 4-year contract for recruiting purposes (if he doesn't already have one), and cost-of-living raises. But if somebody wants to give him a better deal, let them.

Agreed. The excuses for the lack of recruiting just don't hold water for me. All those years we were in the Big East we had one Top 20 recruiting class at #19 nationally, in 2007. And it was a 6 man class. Recruiting has always been an issue, regardless of conference affiliation. We need to figure out a way to get better talent into this program.

Some panned out, some didn't, and some are TBD. But none of them came here ready to contribute more than spot minutes.

Nothing bizarre about it. The Cartel 5 money, which artificially elevated Cartel 5 conf fball has now made its way to bball. It is not just SEC. Northwestern a year or two ago made their first NCAA. VTech is now decent in bball. TBS and espn commentators are now openly asking for a Cartel 5 only trny sans one or two spots. This is the wave of the future in bball as well as fball.

No doubt that cartel money is having a major affect on college basketball. SEC is hiring top basketball coaches in an effort to get better. I think there is something else at play as well.

Look at the FBI investigation into college basketball recruiting/shoe companies. We have Creighton University and TCU assistant coaches popping up on wiretaps discussing payments for kids along with LSU's head coach. DePaul, Louisville, Arizona (XU's former coach), NC State, Oregon, USC. All prominenly featured at the forefront of corruption in college basketball (recruiting).

The top basketball recruits, who are commonly caught up in these payment scandals, are not recruited by UC or don't have UC in their top 5, ever. That's not by accident. I think Mick stays away from the kids that have handlers or whose family expects something in return. Might that be why we've been signing kids ranked 100-300 lately? Maybe, I have no idea. I'm sure we have posters that have better insight on this issue than me as I don't actively follow recruiting.

Recently the NCAA started investigating Kansas basketball recruiting practices, again related to the FBI investigation. https://www.cbssports.com/college-footba...-programs/

Again, we don't go after top recruits but we are also never mentioned in these scandals. Maybe we aren't willing to do what it takes to recruit elite players?

Exactly and this is why we will always have extremely limited depth. Our projects are never ready to help, by the time they are, they are starters and our bench is full again of projects who can't provide quality depth. A school like UC should be far more aggressive on the transfer market, grad transfer market and trying to develop an in with international players. Those are ways you can go outside the norm of recruiting and legitimately up your talent level.

this is SPOT ON....and its a vicious cycle, directly related to Mick's crap recruiting/recruiting philosphy. I mean, if he is committed to filling slots with guys outside the Top 200 (projects), then you have to at LEAST supplement with grad transfers, etc. Guys who can come in and play right away. WE always have such a thin margin of error because our bench is full of not ready to play projects....case in point: Brooks went out and the game vs Iowa was lost at that point.

You want to win in March, you have to have more than 5 guys that are D1 level locked and loaded.

And it was a 6 man class. Recruiting has always been an issue, regardless of conference affiliation. We need to figure out a way to get better talent into this program.

And it doesn't have to all be blue-chip talent. But this strategy of bringing in red shirt guys every year has really hurt our depth. Looking at recent years, we've brought in guys ranked outside the top 200 like Hardnett, Gillam, Nsoseme, Trevor Moore, Tre Scott, Brooks, Jamaree Strickland... Some panned out, some didn't, and some are TBD. But none of them came here ready to contribute more than spot minutes.

Which is why we were all screaming that Mick needed to bring in a 5th year big last year with one of the remaining 3 scholarahips. What does he do with the last 3 scholarships in the Spring, he goes and gets 2 project sub-250 freshman that have to redshirt and JUCO wing that is probably a MAC/Horizon player.
