Stansbury
Looks like he’s out for season unless he coaches from bed or wheelchair and clear of pain meds..

WKU head coach Rick Stansbury will not coach this week as he undergoes back surgery Friday morning. He anticipates a quick recovery and return to the sidelines soon.

More from Coach below on what he wants to see in Diddle Arena for two big games this week! #GoTops #SellOutDiddle

RE: Stansbury
Man I hate that for Coach Stansbury! I know he probably feels like he is letting the players down, but I bet the players rally behind and go on a terror

Back pain is awful...hard sitting, standing, cant bend, cant lay down. Can't do anything over a few minutes, and I feel for Coach...

my back has made me miss more Western games this season than the previous 6 seasons combined . Haven't made a Thursday/Saturday all season. After sitting/squirming for two hours and the hour drive down and back...I'm down for a few days but only with pain meds. Without them I would be up and down up and down all night with pain.

Wish I Coach Stansbury doctor/insurance, I'm ready for a Dr to go in fix the problem...my insurance wants to wait

MARC HSU seems to be doing a good job standing in for coach. I like the way he subs the player, better than Stansbury, players seem more fresh at the end of games

I love my chiropractor! I got to a point I could not walk and now I have zero pain. I have a crushed lower disc and they keep my back straight and I must exercise to keep the lower muscles strong. Best shape in 30 years

X’s and O’s don’t seem much different with Hsu and Crew leading the way. The game management, dealing with refs, etc. will be an ongoing challenge with a guy who’s never sat in the 1st chair. It will take a collaborative effort from all the staff

You’re not lying. I’ve not had anything worse than some stress induced muscle spasms in my back but man, you can’t wipe your ass without it hurting. Hope you and Coach Stansbury both find some relief.

I’m all aboard the ‘people wiping their ass better’ train. I don’t want anyone hurting so much they neglect that area of personal hygiene. Not Stans. Not Guns. Not mturn017.

The team may very well play better without Stans -- less pressure.

I used to think we could roll the ball out there with no coach, and have better luck in Kermit's early years at MT.

Speaking of back issues........... my wife once had to pull me off of the toilet because of a lower back injury (embarrassing). I remember sneezes would hurt pretty badly, too. Who knew that you used your back to sneeze ?

Uh. You use your whole torso to sneeze. I cracked a couple ribs laying a motorcycle down one time. I ended up sleeping in a recliner for 6 weeks until they healed. You have no idea how much you use your core until you have something cracked and it stabs you every time you move. Tryna get up off the john. Trying to get out of a bed. Every move painful. Hell, I ended up straining my calves because I was so afraid of moving the upper parts, I overcompensated using just legs to get up.

You don’t want to sneeze. You don’t want to laugh and I made the mistake of watching some Dave Chappelle and had to turn it off. You don’t even want to breathe deeply.

And this was just cracked ribs. I can’t imagine back pains.

From what I understand it won’t be season ending, assuming all goes well. Hoping to be back before POD play starts.

Might be Stansbury being stubborn he will be back and 100% best case scenario. I hope everything goes well today and he is back before POD play, but that is a very optimistic look....

RE: Stansbury
Do most Western fans want him back ?

Could you guys rent Purple-nosed Ray-Ray from J-State to coach out the season ?

With Stanz' recruiting and Ray's tournament coaching, you'd be unbeatable

I was not a huge Stans proponent when his name was being bandied about. I didn’t like his overall record but especially not his conference record in the SEC.

That said, I’ve grown to really, really like Stansbury as a coach. We’re the same age so I can relate to a lot of the things he says. I don’t think he’s a basketball guru but there’s not that many of those out there anyway. He does know the game.

I do think he’s about as good as a fit as we’ll ever get here at Western. He has pulled in recruits I never dreamed Western could. For all the dipshits that say he’s paying, do they really believe Western could outpay any of the name schools? Really? That’s almost comical if you follow our and any of our peer’s budgets. That money is not here.

He has got guys like Bassey through salesmanship and personality. And hiring Bassey’s guardian as an assistant. Which is not illegal in any form. And has been going on FOREVER. I sat next to a former Western coach Jim Richard last week watching a recruit of ours play high school ball. Jim Richards was a great high school coach in Glasgow Kentucky in the 60s. Nobody was banging down his doors with offers for a college job until he had a couple great recruits. John Oldham offered him an assistant chair and his players came with him and he ended up taking over for Oldham after the Final 4 season in ‘71. Hell, Danny Manning’s dad got a job in Kansas when Danny signed. It’s been going on forever.

I’ve listened to Stans speak at many events. He is the definition of Mr. Folksy and the people around here LOVE that. He could sell ice water to an Eskimo. Dude was getting ready to go under the knife this morning and yesterday tweets out something about getting your tickets for the ball game. Dude never stops selling. Of course there’s a clause in his contract giving him a percentage of increase in ticket sales.

I like his honesty in post games. I guess at 59 and at small school U like Western you don’t have to ‘coach speak’ folks to death. He has some holes in his game. He’s missed on some point gods that would have really pushed us over the top. He’s a clock milker in the last 5 minutes of games. But he works his ass off on recruiting.

I was looking at the UAB board and those guys HATE Stans. Call him dirty and every name in the book. Then they turn around and say they want Andy Kennedy. I almost couldn’t stop laughing at the hypocrisy in that one. Yeah. Right.

RE: Stansbury
Starting to think Stansbury will be around for awhile at WKU, of course its WKU so you never know. But would be great to have some stability in the program and keep a successful coach for once. I am disappointed this season we can beat Arkansas and Wisconsin and lose to Troy and FIU at home. However we are young and only have 2 4 Stars and 1 5 star, so it happens.......What is scary is this team still has played no where near the potential they have to play and have yet to put complete game of 30 min. together much less 40 min. game. Duke freshmen are on a historic run, its tough to win with mostly freshmen, ask UK. They always underachieve compared to rankings preseason......

Same way on my part.

Still hasn't shown me he can win the most important game(s) but any coach that Western can get wont have the whole package...

if they did they would be making 3 to 5 million somewhere else.

What I would like to see from him in year 4, 5 and 6, build a team that sticks around. Then add to it with a great player or one GT. I'm past the stage where if you dont win every game, the world stops. I still hate losing but win the most important games and in the end, you still get to where you would be.

Recruiting and keeping players are so different than it was 10 years ago...some fans dont understand that. They didn't with Harper and they wont with Coach Stansbury. They want the man to go after the best but dont understand when you do that...you are going to lose a few. But to get those ranked recruits you have to put in more time on them than the kid that no one sees their talent...till they get to college. I dont know how in the world Coach has time for both and still family time....

so he lost a couple good PG's and failed on the undervalue PG. Not because he didn't see Western weak at the point. If joe moe fan can see it...coach can also. Shitt happens, and you can only spread yourself so far. These idiots, that dont see that..never will because they see the Mules find that superstar at pg and then wonder why Coach Stansbury didn't. Well he's spending 100s of hours landing those top recruiting classes with 7 to 9 kids every year. In time...the balance will be just right.

RE: Stansbury
Murray Tech is the luckiest program of all time to find two almost back to back NBA first round PGS in Cam Payne and Morant.....Not to mention another NBA PG a few years prior in Cannon....They are where all the stud PGS are in this state, better than UofL and UK...

I think at this point Stansbury has a pipeline going on big men, I think he will always have at least a 4 star in wings....Guards in general are tougher to get, he may have to search for a diamond in the rough or maybe for once we get some luck involved like Murray....Convinced some of this stuff is right place, right time or luck....Read the Morant story in SI and you will see how lucky Murray really was to stumble on this kid...
