RE: Scalf to Retire after this season
It would be great if the 'Beat and the Beard' (or whatever it will now be called) would interview Coach Scalf. It would be great to hear his observations and thoughts about the transition from the Brooks era all the way through to today.
(FWIW, I am among those who think that the 'interview' process for the new coach will be a going-through-the motions operation. [Remember these are public jobs that require being 'open' to all applicants for a certain amount of time before being filled]. Thank goodness our new head coach-to-be is right here, on the job, and Coach Scalf's last season will be a time for him to receive the recognition that he deserves, and not be a distraction.)

Weird comment. Hood is like 99.99999 % the next HC of UNCW Baseball. Why try to stir up something like this?
Can we announce a promotion to head coach mid-season without a posting and interviews? By announcing Hood as the next head coach, Bass can easily get ahead of this for recruiting purposes. Don't you agree? I don't know that we can do that without formality to the hiring process.
My understanding is that Scalf did not want to announce before the season but did so for that very reason.

Exactly. Announcing it right before the season allows the interview process to be conducted during the season. Hard to find a head coach during the season unless you have someone in mind

Athletic positions, including coaches, are not state jobs. There are no hiring requirements that require posting anything. If Jiimmy wants to hire Hood, he hires hood.

Regardless of what the protocol is about hiring the next HC. Jimmy doesn't need to overthink this one. Do the right thing and give Hood the job.

They will usually post the position so they can announce that they searched high and low and picked the "best possible candidate", but there is no requirement they do so.

RE: Scalf to Retire after this season
Randy Hood is the our next coach period. And, I think a great replacement for the living legend that is Mark "Freaking" Scalf. Darn, I knew that this was coming at some point, but I guess it's time...What a great coach this man is! The best in the freaking country period!
Randy will be good no doubt! This is UNCW baseball and he's ready to roll. There's no better transition than this to keep UNCW at the top of the CAA and a regional contender. I know that they're down right this minute, but it won't be long at all. This program is rolling and will keep rolling thanks to Mark and staff. It's been a fun ride and hopefully will keep going due to the preparation and talent that this program now gets.

You would have to assume Hood will get the job but with Bass I can't say it wouls surprise me if he screwed it up.
By the way I think Bass should be looking to get out of the CAA right now. Its a bad fit for UNCW and the teams at UNCW deserve better.
Big South or SoCon -I think are the way to go and go now.

The SoCon now only wants schools with football. Big South has a real potential. But it may take another school with us that has the creds to bolster the strength of the conference.

Didn’t realize they posted the position. It’s without a doubt Hood if they posted it mid season. Nice to know relationships aren’t too strained there. Sincerest apologies for any “weird” conjecture posted on a message board that may have jeopardized the process.
33, don’t rewrite your will.
