Yup..... Only good thing is he has a very solid reputable staff. I'd have to think Hood would be the front runner

Scalf to Retire after this season
Whoever replaces Coach Scalf will need to have the baseball gods smiling over his shoulder because he will have awfully big shoes to fill.

We don't exactly break the bank on our baseball coaches salary either. May have to really up our game to get/keep a good HC.

They have a head coach on the staff who will take the job . Hood is the obvious choice and will do a great job. THey have a solid staff there right now and it should be seamless.

Let's look outside the program and rebuild for a bit. Continuity is overrated.

Hood has loyally stayed here for less money. He deserves the HC position. And besides, what is there to rebuild? Only thing that will make this program stronger is proper funding and scholarships.

So here's a question for those of you closer to it, Hood gets the job, you think most of the staff sticks around? Assuming he'd want to keep them.

What an awesome career... Always hear about the longevity and success of Fox at UNC and Avent at State, but Scalf is very much on their level IMO. Looking forward to seeing the boys make one last run for him this season...

Other than Hood, our staff has always been a bit in flux. So that isn't a big concern in my mind.
Myers is in his first season as pitching coach, and all signs point to him being a good one. Hood likely had a say in bringing him in in the first place.

There's only 57 coaches in college baseball history with 1,100+ wins.
Scalf currently has 909, and with a strong season this year, will retire with 950+. Not far off from that leaderboard.
He also has produced 75 players who went on to play professionally, with a few more left to go off the current roster.
Amazing, amazing career. And he did this with a program that has always had one of the smaller budgets in Division I, and never was fully funded.

Scalf to Retire after this season
He has done a remarkable job considering the resources (or the lack thereof). He learned from one of the best - Bill Brooks. I am sure Mark saw how to make pennies count & the right way to do things while a player for Coach Brooks and while Coach Brooks was the AD. Both men were great for UNCW and both represented the school with the utmost dignity and class.
Coach Scalf has been great and will be a shoo in for the UNCW Sports Hall of Fame when eligible.

A true legend. This is a sad day because you always know that you have the advantage in the dugout. Hood will be a good one too.

RE: Scalf to Retire after this season
My comment above was definitely sarcasm but it dawned on me tonight that there is a solid option out there with strong connections to uncw and he coached under Scalf. Lookup Jason Howell, the current pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Georgia Tech. Wilkes County boy who played at App before transferring to UNC. Drafted by the Red Sox. Coached at UNCW for 6-7 years I believe. Was a rising star at that time and would be very well rounded if we had the money to get him away from Georgia Tech.
Hood seems like a logical choice unless the relationship between the current staff and Bass is too frayed. I have no knowledge that it is but it’s not unreasonable to suspect that it could be.

Weird comment. Hood is like 99.99999 % the next HC of UNCW Baseball. Why try to stir up something like this?

Scalf and Hood have sacrificed a lot by staying with this program, including a better paying job. Randy has more than earned the opportunity to take over the helm as HC. If he is not given the opportunity, I really can't see myself supporting the program any longer. And that is something that's very difficult for me to say.

My man, lighten up. It's a message board and there was no malice to my post nor any I have ever posted. It's not like there wasn't major drama in the off season and you can't argue the timing of Scalf's retirement wasn't influenced by the events. I don't know Hood. From what I gather he should be the next in line. I don't follow baseball near to the extent that you do. I just was thinking, if not Hood, then who? I'm sure my comment won't carry a dime of weight in any decision. Howell would be a great hire if something didn't work out with Hood.
Can we announce a promotion to head coach mid-season without a posting and interviews? By announcing Hood as the next head coach, Bass can easily get ahead of this for recruiting purposes. Don't you agree? I don't know that we can do that without formality to the hiring process.
You should know by now I'm all about staff continuity in our programs if the staff are delivering a strong product.

Fair enough. That carries a lot of weight in my opinion.
