Even after all the prospects we traded that's still a very strong list at the top. Our top 3 (Senzel, Trammell and Greene) match up well with just about any other org's top 3. So do our top 4 (adding India) and even our top 7 (adding Santillian, Stephenson and Vlad) respectively.
Was thinking the same thing. Especially when you factor in the starting pitching we obtained - Sonny Gray in particular with the contract signing/extension.

Reds live game action today! Gray got scratched due to elbow stiffness. Not considered serious - precautionary move only.

Do you think they have a shot at above .500 this year? I want to be optimistic, but the Reds have disappointed me my whole life

I'm not sure your age but the 1990 run was pretty fun. I realize that was nearly 20 years ago but it was a World Championship. Yes, I believe they have a legit shot to surprise and challenge for a wild card spot this year. They've had a pretty good offense over the past few seasons but the starting pitching has been their achilles heel. They just added 3 solid veteran starters to go with a solid pen and added Kemp and Puig to add more punch and professional at-bats to the lineup. FWIW, I've already worn my Reds cap a few times. I haven't done that in quite some time because of low expectations and previous year's 5th place finishes. It's also interesting to note that no other team did as much as the Reds to upgrade their lineup. It was remarkably pretty quiet across the entire league. So, we moved a few notches up and closed the gap on teams above us. You still have to perform on the field so we'll see. I like our prospects for a fun season ahead...

The 1990 run was nearly 30 years ago. I was born in 86 so I appreciate your insight. I've watched enough baseball to know to expect the unexpected. With that being said, I appreciate the dialogue.

Correct. Typo on my part (20 vs. 30). The Reds have had other years since then when they made the playoffs but flamed out. Most recently with Dusty "toothpick wrist band" Baker at the helm. Although, looking back I would take that level of success now after suffering through the Price years. FWIW, I tend to be an optimistic, glass half full kind of guy...

RE: Reds 2019 Season Thread
Some pop in the bats this spring. Reds jumped out to a big lead but lost to the Brew Crew 10-8.
In other news Gray is on the mend...
Quote:One of three starting pitchers the Reds acquired in the offseason, Gray was scratched from his first start on Saturday because of right elbow stiffness. On Thursday, he threw a side bullpen session and came away quite pleased with the results of his roughly 15-20 pitches.
“Yeah, it went great,” Gray said. “I’d say today was probably the best day thus far. I got to play catch, been playing catch for a little while now, got on the mound, brought the catcher in front a little, and then I think I’ll have another day and then have another one on Saturday and kind of go from there. Everything is progressing kind of how we thought it would.”
Reds pitching coach Derek Johnson, assistant pitching coach Caleb Cotham and head trainer Steve Baumann watched Gray as he threw. For this session, Gray's catcher was positioned a couple of feet in front of the plate.
“Today, I just wanted to get on the mound and have a feel after not being on it for a while,” Gray said. “It’s just a progression thing, just get on the mound, throw down the hill and everything feels great.”

RE: Reds 2019 Season Thread
Alex Wood's sore back may keep him from pitching when the season begins. Not too worried since it is a long season.
Quote:As the Reds keep an eye on Alex Wood’s sore lower back, they are thinking about alternatives should their left-handed starter not be ready to begin the season.
Right-hander Tyler Mahle appears to be the leading candidate to replace Wood. In two spring games, including one start, Mahle has three scoreless innings with three hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Originally scheduled for Monday, Mahle is now pitching in Tuesday’s split-squad game against the Cubs.
“I think Tyler is part of that discussion, for sure. It has not been determined, and Alex’s readiness for the season hasn’t been determined, but we do need to start planning for multiple scenarios,” Reds manager David Bell said. “Tyler is right there anyway. He’s doing everything he can. He’s going to be an option certainly for helping us, whether it’s the beginning of the season or shortly thereafter. He’s definitely part of that picture.”

Gray slowly making his way back from a sore elbow...
Quote:Reds starting pitcher Sonny Gray had to wait a little longer than he wanted to make his Cactus League debut with his new team. But he was happy with the outcome when he finally did pitch, dealing two scoreless innings during Cincinnati’s 6-2 loss to the Padres on Saturday night.
“It felt good. I made some good pitches and came away with no runs and no walks. I’m very, very pleased with it,” Gray said.
Acquired in a Jan. 21 trade from the Yankees and signed to a three-year, $30.5 million contract extension, Gray dealt with right elbow stiffness that caused him to be scratched from the first spring game on Feb. 23. It was not considered a serious issue and he quickly resumed throwing.
Gray gave up two hits and struck out three while throwing 32 pitches in his two innings against what was likely close to being San Diego’s Opening Day lineup. He was able to command all of his pitches.
“Sonny was really good. He looked great, actually,” Reds manager David Bell said. “He wanted to keep going. That’s a great sign. He had a lot more in the tank.”
