CA Bullet Train getting the ax?
Most of us have assumed that Gavin Newsom, former SF Mayor, would be much worse than Brown. He still may be, but he's off to a shocking start, by announcing today that the (not really) High Speed Rail project is being massively cut back.

The project is currently estimated at $77B but no one really believes that's a good number. Newsom wants to fund the section that's already been started (some portion of the Central Valley); taking off the end sections (Sacramento/SFO and LA/San Diego). There's still a lot of good money being thrown after bad but this is a remarkably prudent move from a governor who is expected to be a rubber stamp for the super majority Democrat state legislature.

Brown was not great but he often showed signs he recognized his fiduciary responsibility (the "bullet" train was a famous blind spot). Newsom making this move is pretty incredible.

LA Times Wrote:“But let’s be real. The project, as currently planned, would cost too much and take too long,” Newsom said. “There’s been too little oversight and not enough transparency.”

77 BILLION from SF to LA? How much does AOC and her butt kissers think it will cost to replace the air travel lincs? What a colossal group of brainless idiots, and they hold positions of some power in this country.

Maybe the SF guy just doesn't want the LA types commuting in?

The SF poop patrol is already overworked, no need to import more.

https://www.latimes.com/politics/la-pol-...story.html

"...Sen. Jim Nielsen (R-Gerber) called Newsom’s plan “almost humorous.”

“We’re going to put more billions into a train in a place where there is no ridership and no freight will be hauled,” Nielsen said. “What economy is that going to improve in the Central Valley? I was raised there. I farmed there. It is not the answer for the valley.”..."

You either scrap it now or build it to San Jose and the San Gabriel Mountains, avoiding the most expensive segments into LA and SF.

Why does rail transit cost so much to build? It requires less space and fewer building materials than road construction.

There is NO WAY it was going to cost $77B. The original estimates were north of $100B. They got the cost down by working a deal with the railroads so they could use standard track. Which of course isn't remotely high speed.

End result: A high speed rail that's not high speed and would have cost more than the airline flight that would get you to your destination in about the same time.

A huge portion of the price was purchasing all the property. But otherwise, what stink said.

Back when Neel Kashkari (liberal GOP’er) was running for Governor of CA, he would implore Jerry Brown and the voters to “get off the crazy train”. They both disregarded his advice.
