Rice bats finally come alive today. They lead 13-0 over Rhode Island in the 7th. 3 homers on the day including 2 homers and 8 RBI by sophomore Trei Cruz. Pretty good day but his dad had a better one for Rice 24 years ago with 3 homers and 10 RBI in a game against Texas State.
ETA - his dad, not day. His dad is Jose Cruz Jr., who played in the majors for some time (but not as much as grandpa Jose Cruz)

until we meet you guys, the conference always needs a STRONG Rice unit at the plate...

Would’ve liked a Rice sweep but a series win rarely hurts anyone. Our starting pitching was excellent even with our #2 starter Moss out on Saturday. Combined 17.1 IP - 27K. 0 R. Need to clean up the defense a little but that’s expected early in the season. If we hit like we did today we’ll be solid this season.
The opening weekend sweep for USM marks the 5th straight year we’ve swept our opponent to open the season as well as 6 straight times we’ve swept an opening series at home. The only time we didn’t was at a tournament at McNeese St.
2019 - swept Purdue
2018 - swept Mississippi St
2017 - swept Northeastern
2016 - swept Eastern Illinois
2015 - swept Murray St
2014 - road tourney (lost 2 of 3)
2013 - swept Missouri
2012 - Nicholls St (won 2 of 3)
Charlotte's bats were a little rusty, but clutch enough to get the job done. Pitching seems a to be a little ahead of the bats right now, and the defense was very solid this weekend in the sweep. Excited to see how we build on this weekend. Big test at Clemson today.
Does our conference know that baseball just had opening weekend this past weekend? Nothing on Twitter, Nothing on the official website. This is one of the sports that C-USA is historically very strong in. What gives?
Rice's Tre Cruz won CUSA Hitter of the Week. No clue who won Pitcher of the Week. It obviously was not one of the Rice trio of starters, though any one of them would have been a worthy candidate for the honor.
