Why would a non scholly Div III transfer have to sit a season?

Scholarship or no scholarship, in the past I know that if you transfer up or sideways you sit, transfer down and you don’t.

It’s a lot more nuanced than this. If the player was either granted a NLI release from their prior school or was technically a walk-on (not recruited) they would be immediately eligible. And this doesn’t include all the other possible exemptions/waivers that are sometimes granted now.
https://www.ncsasports.org/articles-1/nc...sfer-rules
Quote:NCAA transfer eligibility rules: Walk-ons
Walk-ons is one of the sports terms that's important to know. Soon-to-be NCAA D1 student-athletes who were walk-ons at their previous institutions can generally be immediately eligible at their new one. This applies if the institution that they are leaving offered athletic scholarships in this player's sport, but one was not offered to this student-athlete. It also applies if the previous school did not offer athletic scholarships in that sport, but the player was not recruited to play there.

RE: 2020 FB Recruiting
The way the NCAA has been distributing waivers anymore I wouldn’t doubt it, but I don’t think it’s a slam dunk. When I was in school there were a few guys that transferred up and sat, including one that fit this same exact criteria. Regardless, going back to my first point, if a person can’t get on the field in 2 seasons at a D3 school it’s quite a stretch to think they’d come in and have an instant impact at this level.

RE: 2020 FB Recruiting
James Foster, a dual threat 4 star, 6’3” 210# QB at Texas A&M has just added his name to the transfer portal. He has 3 years ol eligibility left after red shirting his freshmen year, and playing a limited number of games last year. He was originally recruited by Missouri, LSU, UNC and Florida State, before following HC Jimbo Fisher to Tx A&M after Fisher left FSU to A&M.
It appears Foster was beat out in practices by a freshman, and A&M signed another highly ranked incoming freshman. Foster is originally a kid out of Alabama.
Posting for general interest as I’m not sure JMU needs another QB, but with the Nooch being drafted by the Cowboys after transferring from Pitt I’d think JMU is a program that could interest any potential QB transfer.
Thoughts?

Would be a little surprised if he doesn't join a top level P5, but if he fell down to G5 level interest, maybe we would have a shot. We can win battles against ECU, Temple, etc. Seems a bit less realistic if the offers are from LSU, Clemson, FSU ...

The last three JMU QBs have either been drafted or got a look at some level of professional football. I would say because of this any transferring QB would at least consider JMU. Historically, there are quite a few NFL QBs who honed their skills in FCS too. This also helps JMUs cause.
I feel like JMU is very average at QB right now. An upgrade would be welcomed.

Yeah, same here, the one position I am concerned about.
Waiting for an announcement of an FBS ringer coming in.

Well, I do realize there are a multitude of reasons a high school senior could change his mind on schools and that this stuff happens all the time. That said, this one was a head scratcher though. The only FBS team rated lower than Akron in the Sagarins is UMass . They are in territory occupied by VMI and Norfolk St. We're rated #50- they are rated 217th and calculated to be 40 points worse than us, despite their "FBS" branding.
Add in that we just graduated our 3 best pass catchers. If the kid had talent, he could have been in line for decent playing time and targets (for a freshman).
Hope it works out for him. Considering the state of the Akron athletic department though, I feel it was not the most prudent choice.

He has a cousin at A&M who is an OG listed at 6’3” 325# who has also entered the transfer portal. This cousin whose first name is “Tank” (great name for an OL) will also have 3 years of eligibility. No insight why Tank wants to move on, but I would bet even money he and his QB cousin sign with the same team when (or if) they transfer.

Well anyone whose ever been to Akron, Harrisonburg and the respective campuses would agree with Purple. It’s not even close. Screw the ‘Roo...

I think there is more to this than simply choosing between the two schools. My guess is Akron might be offering substantially more money and the parents may need the help sending their child to college.

RE: 2020 FB Recruiting
Not saying you are wrong that more is going on, but it would probably not be a money thing since I would think we would be offering a full ride to a guy this highly coveted. It could be a connection to a coach, a degree program, etc. Either way, it's a 17-18 year old kid trying to figure out his life in a tough situation. Wish him the best and if he looks to transfer, I would hope we are at the top of his mind.
