RE: House Bill in Texas Legislature to Restore the UT/A&M Game Gets Governor's Interest
It’ll be a while as the schools belong to conferences with different approaches to scheduling. The XII front loads 3 non-conference then tries to play 9 conference games almost back-to-back. The SEC spreads out 4 non-conference games amongst 8 conference games throughout the season. Both schools already have contracts for games over the next several years.

Texas has a difficult non-conference game in each season through 2029 and I doubt they’ll want to include a game against Texas A&M. The Aggies have a bit more room but it depends on where in the schedule the Longhorns would fit. My best guess would be sometime in the late 2020s after the XII is dead and gone. Schools will have to adjust their schedules based upon such moves, especially if a school moves into a conference it has scheduled non-conference games. That being said, I see the rivalry being a Thanksgiving Day/weekend conference game again. Throw in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Iowa St.

West: Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa St
South: Arkansas, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi St, Alabama, Auburn
East: Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina

Hmm? Warming up.

Also interesting...

Quote:The problem, Cunningham said, was that Texas had to also play Texas Tech, and that was a deal-breaker for the Pac-10.

What became clear to Cunningham and the Longhorn contingent was it was no longer just A&M that they would include in future considerations, but Texas Tech, as well.

No one told him that explicitly.

“But we were not fools and Texas Tech, over that period, had developed ... a pretty strong legislative presence primarily through a man named Rob Junell, who was chairman of the House finance and appropriations,” Cunningham said. "And so we knew we had to take care of Texas Tech.”

That's why I've felt for sometime that we would be more likely to land the Texas pair than the Oklahoma pair.

If Alston hits and Vandy moves lower Texas, Texas Tech and Kansas make sense for keeping rivals together.

Cunningham is sending the Texas version of a Sicilian message to the SEC and to ESPN. If you want us Tech and Texas must be reunited with A&M and Arkansas.

Hearken back to Mike Slive once saying at a luncheon in DFW that the SEC would be proud to have any or all of the Texas public schools. And that was before A&M came.

You’re reading into old politics

The quote from Cunningham was regarding how Tech used politics to force its way into the B12 riding the crest of West Texas political power fueled by oil and cotton populism.

That was 30 years ago (Cunningham left as president a few years later in 1992)

West Texas is no longer the political force it once was largely due to steeply declining population there vs the explosion of growth in East Texas and the diversification of the Texas economy.

So don’t confuse those days with today. There’s no powerful political alumni in a key office like Bob Bullock was to rescue Tech by black mailing the Flagships into taking them along for the ride again.

Plus, there would be massive blowback from A&M. We don’t want UT in the conference and we absolutely don’t want ANY of their okie or Texas little brother Tagalongs also coming with them. Again, if the SEC let’s them all in then what the hell did we get away from? We left because we DONT want to play them or do business with them anymore.

If Texas politics, ESPN, and the SEC get together all bets are off. We aren't a market driven pay model for anything but the SECN now. The bottom line, geography, and fan draw, will decide these matters.

My point though is that Texas politics today are NOT what they were when the Big 12 was formed so don’t count on them being the same kind of factor today.

If anything, TX schools now have far more agency to act without caring about ties to other schools

Look at what we did.

Maybe they don't need to play each other in fb every year. 2 or 3 times every 5 years could suffice if UT remains outside the SEC. It allows some flexibility to schedule some other prime opponents certain seasons.

Look at what we did.

A&M left while former A&M graduate Rick Perry held the office of Governor of Texas.
A&M announced their departure in Aug/Sept 2011 and Rick Perry(A&M grad) was not going to call a special legislative meeting in fear of Texas politicians.

https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/art...29066.html
https://lrl.texas.gov/sessions/sessionYears.cfm

For those that don't know, the Texas legislature meets every 2 years to make new laws, amend laws etc.

The current Governor is a UT grad and A&M gave us the blueprint on how to escape Texas politics. Walk out in the middle of the night with a friendly Governor who will not call the legislature back into session. Worked fine for A&M/Rick Perry

I don't think Tech or UT will have a problem leaving considering A&M gave us the blueprint.

If I'm factually wrong, please let me know.

You realize that being UTs political baggage is the ONLY way Tech gets a P4 invite and you just explained how they can leave without you and you can scream and cry like Baylor did but as long as they have Abbott there’s nothing you can do

Texas Tech has a bunch of fans that would love to go to Baton Rouge, Oxford, Auburn and Tuscaloosa.
