TeamRankings.com statistics
teamrankings.com

Great site if you want to dig deep in statistic, efficiencies, percentages and comparions. Comparing UNCW to the CAA leaders is interesting

Northeastrn/Hofstra/ UNCW Defensive Efficiency

NU Hofstra UNCW

Posessions game 69.1 70.5 71.7
Def Efficiency 1.029 0.991 1.140
Opp Effective FG % 52.1% 50.9% 56.7%
Opp Two Point Rate 62.4% 61.9% 56.3%
Opp Three Point Rate 37.6% 38.1% 43.7%
Opp FTA/Play 22.1% 18.2% 24.1%
Opp Two Point % 53.1% 51% 55.6%
Opp Three Point % 33.7% 33.8% 38.7%
Opp Free Throw % 70.5% 68.1% 73.2%
Opp Points (2 pters) 37.6 37.2 37.4
Opp Points (3 pters) 21.6 22.8 30.4

The glaring difference is 3pt. defense. Period.

UNCW opponents shoot the 3 ball on 43.7% of their shots while NU and Hofstra limits teams shooting the 3 to about 38% of their shots.

UNCW gives up 30.4 ppg from 3 while Hofstra and NU give up about 22 ppg.

UNCW opponents shoot 38,7% from 3 while opponents of Hofstra and NU shoot 33.8%

Game, set, match. I've looked at the offensive stats and we look very similar to Hofstra on the type of shots we take and offensive efficiency while NU takes quite a few more shots from 3. Otherwise, our offenses look very similar.almo

We give up about the same amount of points from inside the arc as both teams,, mostly because our opponents take a lot more 3 point attempts.

If we have indeed turned some sort of corner on defense, maybe we'll see it in these games vs the top of the league and see how it holds up. I have a funny feeling we were just attempting to slow down our offense due to injuries/sickness of key players which in turn lowered the total possessions count the last couple games. I'm not a numbers guy, but that may be an interesting look for whomever wants to pull them...

Number of possessions for UNCW and opponents in the first time we played Drexel and Delaware compared to the same information from last week's games.

Well, it might not be a bad strategy then to slow down a little. The other defensive numbers improved a bit too. So maybe playing a bit slower is allowing them to put more effort into D?

Completely agree on a good strategy going forward. Anytime you put more effort into the defense though, we shouldn't be surprised with it having an effect on our offense. Less possessions, and using more energy on defense will definitely tire the shooting legs.

It also goes against how we're built to play on offense, so that reduces our efficiency there. We're at our best playing transition basketball, as both Keatts AND McGrath have recruited kids used to playing fast.

I hope there's a way we can get the best of both worlds. That's of course what McGrath envisioned when he got here: Playing fast and piling up the points on offense while still playing strong man-to-man defense. Those usually don't go hand-in-hand, of course, but we've seen Northeastern do exactly that of late.

I hear you, because while the D has improved slightly, O hasn't looked great and that's no bueno either!

RE: TeamRankings.com statistics
We actually got quite a few fast break points against Delaware...20 I believe. Slowing down the game may keep the games closer, but giving up so many more 3's and giving up a higher percentage from 3 will still equal a loss.

We all knew the 3 ball was our weakness, but seeing the numbers compared to two of the top 3 defensive teams in the CAA was interesting. I picked those two teams because CofC doesn't play at the same pace we do. I still think our defensive numbers would improve dramatically playing zone. The drive and kickout for a 3 pointer is our weakness.

Since we know over the course of a game that teams are taking a little over 4 of 10 shots from 3, I may go back and look at how many 3 point attempts they took during our two 4 minute spells of zone we played where we made nice runs. I will also go back the last two games and focus on three point defense.

I am getting a small chuckle out of this discussion since it is identical to the conversation some of us have had about Drexel. It is not that our defense has gotten better, we have just given them fewer opportunities to screw up with a slower pace. It does work too, as long as you are efficient on offense.

RE: TeamRankings.com statistics
Three point defense when playing zone in our two big runs for 4 minutes straight

Drexel game 1

4 field attempts - Two 3 pt. attempts(0-2), two 2 point attempts(1-2). Three turnovers

Towson game 1

5 field goal attempts - Two 3 pt. attempts(0-2), three 2 point attempts(2-3). Two turnovers

Drexel game 2 overall 3 point defense

55 fg attempts, 22 three point attempts. 40% of fg attempts from three(43.7% avg.)
shot 36.4% from 3(38.7% avg)
24 points from three(30.4 ppg avg)

So, better than average 3 point defense

Delaware game 2

51 fg attempts, 21 three point attempts 41.2% of shots taken from 3(43.7% avg.)
Shot 42.9% from 3(38.7% avg.)
Scored 27 points from 3(30.4 ppg avg.)

Slightly better in limiting attempts, worse than avg. % made, slightly better total points allowed from 3.

So, we were slightly better on defense than our averages defending the 3 ball. Then again, Delaware and Drexel are worse three point shooting teams than we are, ranked #7 and #9 in the CAA. Hofstra and NU are ranked#1 and #3. Let's see how we look this week........:-)

You and Hofstra are close on what percent of attempts are threes, but Hofstra shoots much better. If you shot each kind of shot how Hofstra shoots, using the amount of attempts you have, you would have 198 more points, which is 7.6 per game. That's 105 from twos, 55 from threes, and 38 from free throws.
