Monday Musings (a day late)
Lap top needed to charge yesterday so my musings are a day late here they go.
1. Torches are on special at Ace Hardware downtown for Coach Murphy. Very bad week for the program. No truth to the rumors JTIV closed down Powell's Friday night before the Miami game. Player development is appearing to be lacking from the "talent" we recruit.
2. Anger around the basketball program is a positive, it is better then the apathy of the Boone and then the Ramsey years.
3. Will we ever have to re-open the entire upper bowl at the convo again for a basketball game?
4. New coaching hires seem younger and less connected with metro Detroit which would reflect the HBC recruiting strategies it has worked for him so far to move the program forward but whats the next step??? Ford Field.
5. are we having softball this year or no? I know i asked this before but didn't get an answers.
6. Bummed they canceled the coaches luncheon last week at ypsi alehouse I could've went.
will be dodging ice at the pub tonight and tomorrow.

Shame the team has tanked this MAC season. I thought crowds seemed larger than in past years.
A good team would seen decent crowds...

Dear Nickle,
Go to the Eastern Athletic Site. Looks like two dozen will be there with some from the sixties.

They sent out an email mentioning Boykins and Braun with the fans getting a chance to meet them.

wEthErbEE still won't re-instate softball but wants to create lacrosse. Dunno about you guys, but I could support adding lacrosse in addition to softball. But nit in spite of.

RE: Monday Musings (a day late)
I’m not against the addition of lacrosse in replace of softball. However, simply reinstating softball would be the smart thing to do in terms of optics for the university.
There has been a huge issue of late in my opinion around the university in terms of some leaders lacking common sense. I can get behind the cutting of sports given proper reasoning. However breaking ground on a multi million dollar athletic facility less than a year after cutting said sports just isn’t a good look.
Just like cutting softball, and eventually being ordered to reinstate the program... just to sit back and say “hey how about we just add a different sport to replace it” again, it’s just not a good look. Swallow your pride and just reinstate it. Drama is already all over campus, this just adds to the fire.
I’m a emu athletics supporter through and through, and have supported the moves this past year, but I’m beyond ready for some drama free downtime.

I prefer softball. Common sense. EMU already has the facility and youth softball is a growing sport in MI. There are a ton of very good players in this state.
Softball is also a better fit for the EMU blue collar mentality. I look at lacrosse as being more of a blue blood sport.

I'd rather not have swimming, softball, and lacrosse, and put a majority of our athletic funds into establishing a legitimate men's basketball program.

I'd characterize softball as a strong, stable sport in MI, but girls lacrosse is growing exponentially - was made a sanctioned sport by MHSAA a few years ago and now even smaller-sized schools are adding the sport in what I'd think are non-traditional areas.

I want to cut more sports in general, for both genders.

And stay in the MAC?
We haven't cut to the bone, yet, but we really can't.
If we cut a men's sport we can NOT cut a women's sport. It's not like we can do 1 : 1, that would assume we are in compliance, which we are not.
We keep going around and around and around on this but BECAUSE we have many, many more female students than males, we'll ALWAYS have Title IX problems. It what they call 'structural' issue, that is, built in to what EMU is as a university having its roots as a teacher's college.
Literally we'd have to cut say baseball and women's rowing... to have a cut which cuts more men's than women's.
