Republicans in Congress have formally asked Democrats to stop trying to get their hands on President Donald Trump’s tax returns.

Democrats are holding a hearing Thursday on the importance of disclosing Trump’s tax information, which would reveal how much money he makes, who pays him and how much tax he pays.

Democrats are setting one hell of a precedent here with the Trump Presidency. Fabricated investigations and mandatory tax return releases. Funny, but the government (IRS) has already seen them and I'm sure audited them. So the government has already taken an accounting.........

As we all know (yes Mach - you too) - this is just the latest witch hunt. I doubt they will ever get those tax returns.

However, if they do, I think it should be mandatory for all members of Congress to also make their tax returns public as well. No? Think they'll go for that?

Hell, why stop there - lets just make all government employees that make over $100K make their tax returns public - you know, for transparency and all.........

Where in the heck are you getting that? I haven't heard anything remotely approaching that.

The first reason for not doing it is very simple. You won't find any of those smoking that you're just sure will be there. For one thing, tax returns don't have the kind of detail that you and everybody else is calling for them seem to think they do. I think it's hard to imagine a more useless document to view for the purposes of vetting an individual than tax returns. Let me ask you, all those presidents that you say have released all those returns, that's a lot of returns. What's the most significant thing ever found in any of them? I can't remember it either.

The second reason is also simple. These returns have already been reviewed or audited by the IRS with a fine tooth comb. The chances of finding anything that they haven't are slim and none, particularly considering they know what they are looking attend you obviously don't.

There's another problem. If Trump is a typical developer with halfway competent tax and legal advice, then all of his activities are run through corporations or partnerships or LLCs, and all you're going to see on his returns is one line item for each of them. To get to any real information, which won't amount to much either, you'd have to get the underlying partnership and corporate returns. And neither Trump nor the IRS is legally authorized to release those returns.
