RE: Rice men's basketball vs Western Kentucky
Pera's recap quote, by the way:

"It was a hard-fought college basketball game. (WKU) made a few more plays than us to separate in the second overtime. We couldn't stay with them. It's a credit to them. I'm proud of our guys. I'm proud of their effort. I'm proud of how hard we're working. But, we're not there yet. We're going to get there, but we're not there yet. We had a period in regulation when they went 1-3-1 (zone) that we just didn't handle very well. We have to handle it better and we have to learn from it."

Think it stands to say again- QMB is a stud. One hell of a find by the coaching staff. If I remember right he’s still young for his age but he’s probably going to be the best big I’ve seen in 10+ years at Rice (I guess Arsalan was a big but not a true C. Much quicker than QMB).

One year in the weight room to add some muscle and some quickness on his ups and I think he’ll be all conference as mentioned before.

I like all 5 freshmen - hope we have them for years to come. But obviously QMB, Mullins and Murphy are the big 3 for now. Moore and Peterson will be factors too - they just need to develop on both ends of the court. They should look to Josh Parrish who was kind of buried on the bench in the middle of the year but he's been working hard (especially on the defensive end) to make an impact. We'll need Parrish big time tomorrow night to handle Marshall's shooters.

In terms of QMB, I wonder if he's good enough right now to play for the Philippines in some of their international competitions? They still have a decent shot to qualify for the World Cup this summer in basketball. He might be a couple of years away but I think he certainly has a future playing in those types of competitions.

This one hurts... but happy with our effort and the level of teams we’re matching up against.

We’re 12th right now but, Had we won, believe it or not, we would be just one game behind 4th place.

We’re 2-5 in last seven games with the 5 losses coming by a TOTAL of ten points (counting tonight as -1 as does the NET ranking)

Someone on the conference board suggested WKU “was young” like us. They had 5 guys play the bulk of their minutes

Savage: 45 mins, Redshirt Junior transfer
Bassey: 39 min, freshman but he’s leaving for the NBA
Bearden: 43 min, Redshirt Senior transfer
Anderson: 43 min, sophomore (should be back)
Hollingsworth: 47 min, sophomore (should be back)

Ako was our only guy who played more than 38 min.
Williams: 38 min is our only guy scheduled not to return who played.

Our freshmen played 119 min.

Very proud of the way Coach Pera has gotten these guys to be so competitive and keep fighting. It's frustrating to be so close so often and not quite get over the hump. Hope they can find a way to learn to win a few of these kinds of close contests before season's end. Keep fighting, Owls!

I too have been very impressed with this team and would have hoped that they could have closed out more of these really close games. But let's not forget that 7 of the 9 guys in the rotation did not play for Rice last year and 5 are freshmen. Next year, this team wins this game. Hate to bring this one up, but Conner leaving was just brutal as I think him leaving probably cost us this game and 4-5 others this year. Was it worth it to leave for Creighton who is highly unlikely to make the NCAA and maybe not even play in the post-season. Eleven minutes/game of PT with 21 points and rebounds in total? With the family and local connection? OK I guess.

Parrish needs a different shoe contract. Seems to face plant on most drives.

Really needed to get his skates sharpened...lost his edge multiple times.

I agree with the comment that we should have taken more outside shots at the end. Neither the dives to the basket or getting the ball inside to QMB or Williams paid off as WKU collapsed on them and were very physical in preventing buckets.

We were so close to breaking them mentally. When we built the lead WKU looked panic and were just throwing up quick shots. The change by them to pressure made the difference. We twice threw cross court passes that were stolen and led to points and committed two charges that led to points. Cut those mistakes to two and we probably win.

BTW kudos to the marketing department for the giveaway bags last night. Really good quality that will be good for a number of uses.

+1 on your game analysis. I think QMB may reach a point where he can’t be stopped when he gets as close to the bucket as he was getting last night. I am feeling so good about the next few years for this team.
