Johnny Carson on taking political stands on Tonight Show
Carson understood.

He was an entertainer. He did not take himself too seriously.

That point has been lost in today's self-important Hollywood.

This is why ratings and viewing audience are way down.

Entertainers today speak to their audiences-and their audiences are pretty much the folks who agree with their ideological stand. If you don't, you turned them off long ago.

Maybe he didn't take "stands" per se but Carson was not above taking shots at politicians, using them as targets of jokes.

One of his favorites was his buddy Ronnie when he was in the WH.

Colbert is killing it. Reality tv ratings are up though, because people are so “sophisticated” huh?

RE: Johnny Carson on taking political stands on Tonight Show
Ratings of any particular program are down because of streaming (and a huge list of channels to choose from if watching cable).

Any other reason given is either dishonest, way less significant, or just shows a lack of understanding.

This has nothing to do with ratings.

Just that Johnny Carson was smart enough, and classy enough, to realize his views on controversial subjects were not important. He was just an e-n-t-e-r-t-a-i-n-e-r and realized it.

Sure he had some honest fun at the expense of politicians of both sides, but he was not one sided and did not seriously advocate for, or against, any political party because he knew we did not care. He was right.

Sometimes things do not need to be politicized.

Sometimes they do. I feel this time more than any, our Republic is at risk.

I understand and respect your opinion (Trump is a moron, and the Dem's seem committed to getting him reelected with their stupidity), but you may want to brush-up a little on your American history. Try Ken Burn's documentaries on the Civil War and Vietnam. Good stuff!

The nation is not at risk from a war standpoint, but our two 'camps' are so far apart we can't bridge our differences anymore. Trump is intolerable to nearly all the Democrats, just as Obama was intolerable to us Republicans. Sadly, Presidents don't try and heal the division after the election anymore-instead they 'in your face' to the other side.

The problem with that is half the voters feel disenfranchised at any one time, they have no skin in the game of making things work again. It's going to get worse, much worse, before it gets better.

Where did I say it wasn’t as risk then?! This time it’s for keeps, way more at stake. This is world wide. Putin gets it and is acting accordingly in his best interest, us? Not so much.

Ok, I wasn’t around then. BUT, in my lifetime, nothing has been a bigger threat, including Nixon. He ultimately realized this was a country of laws and capitulated.

BTW, the Republic was still intact, just less states and the POTUS still believed in the framework.

It's not a country of laws anymore-at least not for the anointed few. In my lifetime I have never seen Washington more corrupt than it is now. Laws are broken with impunity, especially if the MSM supports your ideology.

RE: Johnny Carson on taking political stands on Tonight Show
Well, I agree America has a narcissistic moron in the White House (thank you Hillary, your inept campaign and lack of ethics put him there). And I also agree the Democratic Party no longer believes in the 1st, 2nd or 5th amendments of the Constitution which is just as disturbing and dangerous.

That said, sometimes we need to be above politics. Sometimes we need to just appreciate a good laugh together. Carson understood that and practiced it during difficult times. He was not a shallow and blindly partisan slappy. We need more principled - and classy - men and women like him.

If you watch the whole Carson 60 Minutes interview and read stuff written about him later - he had a lot of his own issues.

Ratings talk. Don’t like the content? Don’t watch. Obviously Colbert has fans. Trump did on “The Apprentice”, that’s how we got a reality tv con man

Rush Limbaugh has fans, too.

Doesn't make either he - or Colbert - men of character.

Step away from the partisan koolaid.

Colbert is a comedian who does a great job at what he does. His political humor is a delight to many and gets laughs, not vile hisses like Limbaugh. Bad analogy. Plus he’s not a fat, ugly fake journalist in the vein of Hannity and Limbaugh.

Your partisan stripes and bias are showing.

Colbert, like Limbaugh and Hanity is a partisan hack/stooge on a short leash with limited original thought.

Carson had his faults, but was his own man who did not take himself too seriously.
