RE: ODU
We did reasonably well in the first half. Shots were falling and our defense was decent. A huge factor was Caver getting two quick fouls and sitting out much of the first half. Caver and Stith are good for 30 + per game and they only had ten combined in the first.

Second half ODU went to the 1-2-2 and we had no idea how to solve it. Gueye was in his first game after breaking his nose, came out in a mask but could not play with it and took it off. He was very tentative inside as a result. Lewis was trying but every time he want inside they sagged on him hard. The ball movement was reminiscent of Mike Davis' run the clock down to seven and then try to get a shot up. No one was moving off the ball. Our offense was stagnant and ODU really dialed up their defensive intensity.

Caver and Stith got back to normal (or better than usual, really) and wound up with 32 points each. First half ten points, second half fifty-four between them. Ball game.

Lovan got in but was not effective. Probably too soon for him to be trying to play, and he obviously isn't used to playing with the hard cast yet.

As to putting more guys in, the starting five had 35+ minutes except for Bell with 31. Scott-Grayson got 16 min and scored six points. Pearson, Lovan, and McCoy did not score. I can't think of anyone on the bench that was going to make a difference tonight.

RE: ODU
For the first time, I felt we were totally out-coached. The team acted like they had never seen a 3-2 zone defense before. We just passed the ball around the perimeter like a hot potato until the shot clock wound down and the guy with the ball had to shoot. I never heard any specific coaching from the sideline on how they players were to attack the defense and it showed.

For the rest of the season we will be playing Syracuse every game unless the opposing coach outwits himself.

Zone, Zone and more Zone.

RE: ODU
Not trying to pile on the guys but I'll just echo what several people saw. We looked lost in the second half. Weren't sure how to attack their D, so we just swung the ball around the perimeter. Ball movement wasn't crisp so we had to force a lot of contested shots.

I had my hopes up in the first half but maybe ODU was just cold.

We were out coached, but we also don’t have the players right now to compete with ODU. Their guys in the post were just too big. Their two all-conference players, Stith and Caver, just toyed with us. Injuries have really hurt our season.

Was his shooting hand injured?

Sorry I missed this last night....it is his none shooting hand

That's what I have been saying to our group that goes to the games. At this point why not give some of the bench guys 30 seconds, a minute, 5 minutes! Hell I don't care just try anything cause it cant be no worse then what we currently are doing. ODU is a 2 headed monster. Stith and Caver shoot close to 70% of the teams shots. You stop them and you can beat ODU. We simply could not stop them and I don't know if that's cause they are that much better or the coach didn't put our guys in a position to stop them with his defensive calls.

We do, and they play hard. I see a lot of pretty athletic guys but all fairly limited offensively. We are not a good shooting team and while we are playing better defensively this season, we don't create many easy buckets from our D.

The perimeter dominates the game now. We've just had too many nights like last night, sub .300 3-pt shooting. Very hard to beat better teams shooting like that.

RE: ODU
We talked about our lack of size during the preseason and some said it wouldn't be a problem, but it is. The troubling part about the team is we have no depth. We currently play 7 guys(not count Lovan) and the only one of with size only gets about 5 minutes/game. So a 6 man rotation. At the end of games we are exhausted. Teams run us around, having us chase for 30 minutes knowing this. We have got to steal some minutes from somewhere even if we/bench players are exposed defensively. And we have got to recruit taller guards.

If both ODU bigs are healthy they probably still win if we stop Stith and Caver. We can't stop their post or perimeter play.

By now Hurtado should be a G/F playing the four, as a point forward.
We can't shoot as a team, got a shooter wasting on the bench.
Got a guy who's been a D1 guard for five years now and doesn't play.
We seem to find mins for a walk on tho go figure.

Why we start three 6'1 guards is beyond me.
Can't say I saw any player get better even Scootie and he's my guy.

There was no sign of Davis plummeting worse than Eshan or Haase. Lol. Look at their first three season.

Davis struggles started from apr, something he had no control of and got some Anderson guys to comeback and graduate. What was the Apr scores under Davis again?

Let's keep this about ODU and UAB. Feel free to start a davis worship thread Dee.

I'm as frustrated with the loss as anyone. Not having Butler inside is costing us dearly. It is what it is. Murry didn't get a pass with all the injuries he had late and neither is HCRE. I do like how hard we play and we do play a lot better defense. ODU is a veteran team and give them credit for making some excellent plays to get guys some open looks both outside the arc and in the paint.
