RE: CAA History Lesson
It's too early to tell whether CofC should regret moving to the CAA. The Cougars moved to the SoCon in '98-'99 and went undefeated in regular season play and won the Tournament. That was their only NCAA appearance in 15 years in the SoCon. They were often the best team in the regular season after '99, but they couldn't win the SoCon Tournament, which was held in North Charleston several years. Wofford has been the best team in the SoCon the past few years and they would have blocked CofC from winning the automatic bid.

They won the CAA Tournament in '18 and got that monkey off their back. Over time, UNCW and CofC should be the best programs in the CAA. They have the most tradition and best history.

RE: CAA History Lesson
Keep in mind the SoCon only invested money into the conference with the exit fees from Davidson and CofC. Without, their conference wouldnt have changed much.

RE: CAA History Lesson
The exit fees paid by each school to leave the SoCon were minimal. In addition to CofC and Davidson; Elon, Appalachian, and Georgia Southern left at the same time. With 5 schools leaving, it might have added up to a decent amount.

The additional money the schools have invested in basketball came from the conference contracting from 12 teams to 10. Each school gets a larger share of the NCAA money.

The SoCon improved largely from Wofford having a great coach for over 15 years. UNCG kept Wes Miller longer than some thought prudent, but he finally put a good team on the floor. The SoCon ended up with 1 excellent and 3 decent teams this year because the dregs of the conference lost every game but 1 to the top 4. Those top 4 teams had one good non-conference regular season win. Furman beat Villanova.

In the upcoming years, the schools will start getting extra money from Wofford's NCAA win over Seton Hall.

RE: CAA History Lesson
The SoCon was 54-5 against the ASun, MEAC, Big South, and Non-D1 teams.

They were 7-1 against the Colonial. Anyone who followed the CAA this season would acknowledge that.

What was WCU's record against Wofford, Furman, ETSU, and UNCG? It was either 0-8 or 0-9, depending whether WCU played one of those teams in the SoCon Tournament. The bottom 6 teams won 1 game against the top 4.

Everyone keeps forgetting why CofC left the SoCon to begin with, an it has nothing to do with athletics. They wanted to iincrease their footprint to the north to recruit out of state students. Time will tell if that strategy works.

Valid point. And everyone on this board knows we finished last, and still had enough talent to compete with the top teams even grab a W against Hofstra. The bottom of the big south was much worse than the CAA.

RE: CAA History Lesson
Yes, balance always hurts a mid major conference. When the CAA got multiple bids, it always came from dominance aka less balance. Yes the bottom didnt seem to be as low but it was always the top 2-3 teams running away from the rest and not being upset by a bottom team. That is how at larges have always been earned. Avoid the bad losses, especially in conference where teams know you.

Will be interesting to see if data emerges confirming a conference that receives minimal publicity results in increased applications/enrollment from Northeast/mid-Atlantic to a school in SC.

The publicity, although minimum, makes those associated with the CAA aware of a place called "College of Charleston" that otherwise may have never heard of them. If it weren't for the CAA I don't think i'd have ever heard about Northeastern, Hofstra, George Mason, VCU, Georgia State, Towson. Many northerners look to attend school in the south. The universities in South Carolina are also very aggressive in their out of state tuition pricing.

I take aboard that CoC might want this to be the case. What isn’t clear is that data exists to indicate a video game playing high school junior even knows the CAA exists.

I have no idea what the powers that be in Charleston had in mind with the move to the CAA, but the average CoC fan thought it would be a conference upgrade to move to the CAA. They wanted to move to a conference they thought would have multiple bids to the playoffs in future years, and to a conference that was not football-centric. Since Charleston is a state school, and as such, can only have a certain percentage of students from out of state, the northern exposure was not that important to draw students, they draw pretty well from NC, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. They did, however, think their "national brand" would get better recurring exposure by playing in the NE in the CAA, as vs. the SoCon.

WCU sucked this past season, but we have a new coach and are hopeful for the near future. Our biggest problem last season was turnovers, I think we led the nation in that stat, and lost many games (many of which the team could have won) had it not been for the the high turnover rate.

South Carolina doesn't have the same out of state attendace rules as North Carolina, which is limited to 18%. USC exceeds 43% and the other state schools are near that number. CofC is at 34%, Coastal 49%,

I'm the opposite. There are 353 teams in Division I, and I named teams and what conference they were in off the top of my head. When I got to 35 missing, meaning I did over 90 percent, I stopped trying for a few more. That's not being given the teams and saying what conference they were in. I was able to name the teams. The southeast is the hardest region for me to do that. The Big South, Conference USA, Sun Belt, Southern, Ohio Valley, and Southland are hardest for me. I don't know how much of that I could have done when Hofstra joined the CAA. I never considered attending a school other than Hofstra, so knowing other schools didn't matter. I was a freshman in 2003-2004, which was Hofstra's third season in the CAA.

This is our most popular local afternoon sports show. Most of the listeners are between 35-65 and are either South Carolina or Clemson fans. It doesn’t really reflect the CofC fan.

I’d say at least 2/3 of CofC fans approve of the CAA move right now. There were a lot more doubters in 2014-2015, but CofC has helped their prestig in the past few years.

To each their own. My daughter is getting ready to go to college. She is considering CofC because I know of the school from games with UNCW. I wouldn't have known of CofC otherwise and neither would she.

The premise of the poll is ridiculous because CofC knew they wouldn't be in the CAA at the same time as GMU, GSU, and ODU. Given that two of those three (and VCU who left a year earlier) had great attendance, the decrease in attendance and in the desire for TV networks to show the CAA shouldn't have surprised them.
