Gotta think UNCW faithful would easily make that trip
Isn't Charleston closer?
Yep, and it's also being abandoned by the CAA for the glorious Washington DC
Yeah, that's silly. No one wants to go to DC in March.
DC and Asheville both take roughly the same time though to commute form Wilmington. 5 1/2 hours
but one is a fairly straight shot with little to no traffic while the other involves traffic from hell once you get past Richmond
Yeah DC sucks, no way around that. Asheville weather in March can suck though too. I think it snowed during their tourney weekend last year.
Discussions like these where i really wish Wilmington would man up with an arena, and be able to host things like this!

DC sounds good on paper IMO. I plan on giving that site a chance. My problem with the tournament is it ends on Tuesday. Wish the final would go back to being on a Monday with the majority of the tournament being played on the weekend.

RE: CAA History Lesson
UNCW is not going to join the SoCon.
1. They enjoy one of the highest out of state applications in the enitre UNC system. Mostly from the northern states where the CAA footprint lies. We get some name recognition in that region that we would not get in the SoCon.
2. The academic recognition of the CAA schools is far superior to the SoCon.
3. The size of schools in the CAA is on par with the UNCW.
If I could wave a wand and make any change I wanted, i'd add Campbell and UNCG to make the CAA a NC centric conference with an easy set of travel partners. UNCG, Campbell and Elon are all really close to the Virginia border to boot. Could also play the CAA tournament at the Greensboro coliseum
Campbell has a pretty big following and is really close to Raleigh. They are a rising star in NC and already have almost 7,000 students. They also have a football team.
UNC Greeensboro is in the largest city on the East Coast that doesn't have a college affiliated with a top tier conference. They have about 17,000 students.
This would set up a really nice two division conference
CofC, UNCW, UNCG, Campbell, Elon, W&M(longest drive would be Charleston to Williamsburg at 7 hours. All other drives under 4:30.)
Towson, NU, Hofstra, Delaware, JMU, Drexel (Boston to Harrisonburg longest drive 9 hours, all others under 6:30)
Face it, there are only two Virginia schools left. North Carolina is the best place to make the heart of the conference and the best place to add schools. This set up would make a really good travel schedule for everyone in the conference.

I like it. We’re long overdue to get this league a North and South Division with reasonable travel schedules. Play everyone in your division twice plus having the option to have 2 travel partners in the other division, giving each team either 16 or 18 league games.

The problem with your split is you can't split W&M and JMU. They would want to be partners and connected as they are already semi rivals. But I do like it. UNCG would definitely be a good school to have. Campbell is meh but I understand your logic there.

Completely agree. There's no way you're splitting those two. They love to hate each other. That would be like us being in a conference with EZU and having us in different divisions.

Most folks outside of NC aren't quite as familiar with Campbell as we are. I don't fault his thinking there. I would support 82's conference members there to include Campbell.

Easy fix: Make them permanent travel partners.

True, but not so easy with current construction. I do not think it makes a lot of sense to make Towson and Elon travel partners just because they are the 2 odd men out which is why W&M drew Elon and JMU drew Towson.

I believe the SoCon no longer wants schools who do not have football. They had an issue with East Tennessee State when they dropped football.
And I would take Coastal over Campbell. If, and only if, they have successfully addressed their academic standards.

No way Coastal comes to the CAA. They have become a very good football program and baseball program in a tight conference.

I don't know if it would be as big a deal as you make it out to be. They would still remain in the same football conference and could play each other as they do now. Let them have a yearly game in basketball and call it a day. The heyday of a Virginia conference is over. We can't make decisions on what JMU and the Tribe want, especially with JMU standing with one foot out the door.

It's very likely that none of this happens. Except for maybe UNCG down the road. I thought this was more of a wish list. So, in a perfect world, I would choose Coastal any day over Campbell. If they have addressed their academic issues, they would immediately strength our standing as a conference. Don't believe Campbell can do that.

How so? Campbell hoops has been better than Coastal, and yes coastal baseball had their run, but Campbell baseball is solid year in, year out just like Coastal.

Coastal still has a better history in baseball and basketball. And how will Campbell basketball be without their one man show?

Who knows. And maybe coastal does have more history. And honestly, either one would work. Campbell's academics are far superior to CC.

Campbell basketball has three winning seasons over the last 15 years. None more than two games over .500. All in a lesser conference.
