I’ll always go back to the story of Nathan Palmer almost quitting because of how much he hated Doeren. It’s a total non issue.

So what? I'm sure there was a player or two that disliked Novak and Kill too. The difference is Carey was not the favorite by a long shot by more than just one guy on the team. He won games. Ok. NIU football under Carey was not exciting or fun to watch, he had some successes and failures which there's no need to re-hash because its been beaten to death 50 million times already. Bottom line is I'm ready for a new era of NIU football.

People say players disliked Carey because they (you) didn’t like him. He was no different than any other coach in the sense there were players who loved him (Levon, JL6) and players who hated him.

And I’m glad you’re ready for a new era. Here’s to hoping it shows up in the stands next fall. I doubt it.

No, I'm saying the players disliked Carey because of what they directly said about him. I know its hard to hear something about your hero that tarnishes his reputation, since I'm sure you're in mourning right now. Maybe you can start a gofundme for a Carey statue to assuage your bereavement. Don't worry, NIU football will be okay without him.

And I’m saying every coach who has ever coached football ever has players who will say negative things about them. You get 90 18-22 year olds together and odds are not everyone is going to like you.

And sick burns at the end there.
I agree that every coach in every sport has players that don't like them. Even the great ones like Saban, Urban Meyer, Coach K, and John Wooden. But there are coaches that can relate to and inspire a larger percentage of their players to perform at a higher level. I have had great and terrible coaches and managers, and the teams with the great leaders have always outperformed the bad ones. It comes down to respect, trust, and also personality. If I like a manager and/or coach, I will do more to earn his respect and work harder for him and the success of the team. It remains to be seen if Hammock will do better than Carey in wins and losses. I don't think Carey is a bad guy and it might be he is just not good in front of the camera, but I have seen enough of him to know he is not a person that would inspire me to be a better player or employee. And if I was a player looking at schools as a junior or senior, I would be much more excited about Hammock than Carey.

I said when he was hired Hammock is much closer to Fleck than he is Carey. He’s got much more of a personality and especially considering he played here I don’t think there’s any doubt he’ll relate to the players better.

According to this place though, Carey couldn’t recruit, couldn’t coach, and all his players hated him. It’s amazing how much success he had considering that.

Wasn't he like 3 games above .500 his last 3 years? If players dont like him how do you create a positive culture and recruit?

He is one of the winningest MAC coaches of all-time. He will be inducted into the Mid-American Hall of Fame and have a possible statue erected at Huskie Stadium.

Carey won. He did a very good job. Having said that, I am excited to see what Hammock can do. He is bringing in a very good staff. They should be able to recruit. We will see if they can coach.

+1 Now that we have a solid staff you have to take the wait and see approach. Hammock is pretty excited about his staff. Going to be interesting to see their coaching styles and how they move around the players. Great opportunity for young players to prove themselves.

We also have three tight ends in Daniel Crawford, Mitch Brinkman and Corey Lersch who can get downfield and catch the ball. At QB this is the year that Childers either gets consistent or gets replaced. There's a lot to like with Childers and I'm pulling for him. He's tough, can extend plays with his feet and never complains when he's getting killed in the backfield (see UAB game). But now is the time for him to take the next step. We have other options available and this coaching staff does not have the investment in Childers that the previous one did. I have to believe that if he's having one of those games where they go three and out nine straight times this staff will give someone else a shot. So one way or another we should see improvement there. This team has everything it needs to compete for a MAC championship, let's get it.

Childers has mastered the bounce pass.

04-bow

And don't forget the out of bounds pass.

Like we can afford another statue on our current budget. Maybe a cardboard cutout.

95% of the offensive problem has moved to Temple, but Carey did leave a huge void of offensive talent for the new coach. Childers is not the type of QB that can carry a team alone, it will take awhile to get talent behind him. The one bright spot going into next season is that the MAC still appears to be down next year also. Some might argue WMU is making a move to the top again though. I think by the 2021-22 season, Hammock will have his players in place for NIU to get back to where it belongs.

Carey was essentially a 500 coach after Doerens players left. That wont cut it when have one of the weakest schedules in nation.

A very early preview of the 2019 Huskies: https://www.sbnation.com/college-footbal...ule-roster

With all the changes there could be some adjustment period. However, it is often said that teams take on the personality of the coach. If the Huskies take on the personality of Hammock with his passion for Huskies football we will be in great shape!

Hammock is still completing his staff amid recruiting, but his first hire was inspired. He brought South Dakota State offensive coordinator Eric Eidsness, one of college football’s more interesting offensive minds, east.

Love that...
