Ah. Yes. Reached article from Ed's Blog.

Norm is the VP/DP VT writer. He won't deal with ODU except when the play the Hokies, possibly when they play the Cavs. Ed wouldn't compromise himself by being that blunt about the team he's covering. He's not going to blow smoke up their asses but he's certainly not going to be all "Wilder needs this team to be better to save his ass but that ain't happening."

Spot on article. Tough schedule, but this team better perform or Wilder will be done. The vt win and the new stadium are keeping demand up for this year - but my crew has already said they don’t want to sit and watch bad games in the elements (and have it be a full day commitment). But everyone in my crew LOVES the basketball season (including me).

6-6 and be competitive in every game. No more 52-10 blowouts. That would be a step in the right direction for next season.

If we played Clemson, ok. But not Liberty. That game was flat out embarrassing.

Agreed. That tech win saved BW.

Embarrassing is too kind and an understatement.

RE: 2019 football offseason
Opening day is getting closer.

I am still almost completely in the dark as to where we will be, especially at OL.
The Spring game has been completely useless as a predictor for a number of years.

I am cautiously optimistic, as we now have FBS caliber coaches who know what schemes work at FBS, and more importantly, have experience assessing FBS talent.

Realistically, with the daunting schedule, a winning season and a bowl may not be in the cards, but I will consider the season a success if:
1. We avoid blowout losses to non P5s like the one to Liberty. As noted above, that was totally unacceptable. Indeed the most unacceptable game in our history, IMHO.
2. We show substantial improvement at OL and DB from past seasons.
3. We develop a QB(s) progressively, instead of having to make panic moves in reaction to circumstances.

Building the program in a calculated methodical way will serve us well in the long term.

04-cheers

If that happens it will likely be the end of the Bobby Wilder era. I'm really rooting for the guy to bounce back, but realistically don't expect it.

You can't blame the writers for predicting poor performance based on last year and who we lost to graduation, but they don't take into account our new transfers, especially Kumah and Cunningham, a potentially more dynamic QB, and our new position coaches and coordinators. That is all worth maybe worth 2 more wins and we get to 6, i.e., at least it should make us better than Charlotte, WKU and UTSA in CUSA, and with Norfolk State and a winnable ECU game, we would just have to eke out a win against FAU, FIU, UAB, MTSU or Marshall. Seems doable if the OL can hold up. Defensive schemes should be much better.

Apparently the coaches think so as well. We have 18 OLinemen on the roster for 2019, the most ever, from a low of 12 in 2015.
With Knight's departure, we are thin at RB.
Kumah is apparently a solid addition, but there are more questions at WR than we have ever had, IMHO.
A solid OL that that can open holes and protect the passer will go a long way toward mitigating the losses from last year.

(06-07-2019 03:31 PM)Gilesfan Wrote:  All depends on the QB this year.

That seems a bit simplistic, as even TH had great receivers to throw to and, at least at FCS into FBS, a great OL as well. If true, then it is an epic fail in the development of our program.

Ever since TH left, many of us (fans) have been looking for that "savior" quarterback to carry the day.
I look forward to a time when we are balanced and solid enough that merely a good consistent FBS QB can be successful.

04-cheers

If we can beat NSU, ECU, WKU and Charlotte this season, I will be satisfied. ECU is this season's biggest home game IMO.

Are you saying if we ONLY beat those 4? I think we can do better. UTSA should be a win, steal one other.
