You could tell the staff had lost confidence in his throwing but loved his athleticism and size. Perfect candidate for WR. Smart move by him and the staff.

RE: 2019 football offseason
So is Smartt "ahead of Taylor Heinicke at this point in his career"?
or after 4 games, will someone else "be the starter moving forward"?

College football programs that did the best/worst job of filling their seats in 2018
Quote:Also worth recognizing is Old Dominion, tied at No. 16 with Texas. Though the Monarchs’ Ballard Stadium is the third smallest in the FBS with only 20,118 seats, they managed to keep them full despite going 4-8. Compare that to Western Kentucky, which plays in 22,113-seat L.T. Smith Stadium. The Hilltoppers filled only 64.4% (No. 88 nationally) of their seats in 2018 with a similar 3-9 mark.

I like how we are sandwiched between two teams whose stadiums hold more than 100k lol

Lol. And that third smallest in FBS weighs a whole lot more than percent filled with most evaluators.
But I have a feeling that the admin will prop that percent filled even more and wait for it to matter a bit to these HS coaches and 3-4 star players.

I believe we will be 5th smallest in the new stadium. We were 4th before.
More relevant is that similar sized stadiums include 15 with 25k or less capacity, and 27 with 30k or less capacity.
College football has and is seeing attendance decline nationwide, generally since 1996.
Beyond the initial construction costs, the ability for ODAF to maintain tiered seat selection based on donation level and the optics of a full or near full stadium are hugely important.
I think that the decision to go with the current capacity was brilliant.

No problem with the capacity for now, its the ugly end zone, lack of suites and short height that bug me. When we replace the end zone we could (should?) actually lose capacity there, so hopefully we add a top tier of 4 or 5000 that will add to the capacity overall and solve the height issue. Maybe we can add suites underneath the top tier at that time too. Otherwise they might have to go on top, which would be harder to sell. It might only be 25-27000 seats at the end, but it would certainly be impressive looking. Especially with a very nice horizontal video board towering over the new NEZ.

RE: 2019 football offseason
I guess I'd reserve brilliant for when I see HS coaches and 3-4 star players consider ODU something more than FCS. I understand the financials and contribute heavily, but don't really care much about the other metrics. I just want this program to get on that level.
So I'm hoping that I can call it brilliant at some point. But not holding my breath on that one with 4 larger college stadiums in our own state alone.

G5 is basically the new FCS now. We just need to be sure we are always considered a step up from real FCS, and not get lumped in with the WM, Richmonds, JMUs of the world. Recruits and coaches should associate us with ECU, Temple, Navy & Marshall more. Beating those teams will help in that regard. And we should be playing ECU every year for that matter with some type of trophy or something.

Attendance is a major issue, even in the P5. Check out this video and keep in mind Arizona State is probably the largest University in the country this year, with an enrollment that has it 119,000.
