This. I am sure the people down the hierarchy inside the EVMS could care less but the ones at the top doesn't want to give up that power.

Benefits to ODU - matriculation agreements for PA and Med School, count research $ at EVMS towards ODU, allows ODU faculty to pursue Health Care and Medical Research grants; bumps us profile
Benefits to Sentara - Direct source of Drs. and PAs, huge revenue stream from EVMS out patient services, specialists, and Dr. in Box
Benefits to EVMS - Off loads facility and overhead expenses and provides more base funding but that is it !!! They could careless if this happens. The only way it will happen is if they are told to do it or they are on their own.

More state money is not small potatoes. Plus the merged entity would increase prestige for both and as a result, research dollars and grants. It would raise the profile of both, bring in money and jobs, and help make a bio-tech corridor.

I know a few folks at EVMS and the general consensus is that no one at the top at EVMS wants a merger with ODU.

MCV didnt want to merge with VCU either. But ultimately the state made it happen. I still think it makes way too much sense not to go through... eventually. There are basically four partners in this: the state, ODU, EVMS and Sentara. Three out of the four want it to happen. From what I read a while back, it seemed the sticking point was they wanted to have a separate board made of ODU/EVMS nominated people to oversee the combined effort rather than the existing ODU board, and they wanted to be sure people didnt lose their jobs. That seems reasonable and solvable to me. It may not happen this year, but it seems likely to me that it happens sometime in the future. But, I dont know anything behind the scenes. Just guessing from the news.

That opinion piece is really good. Hard to think that anyone looking forward and thinking about those that come behind us wouldn't agree.

I guess there was a reason why Hemphill was chosen as the new president.
“Old Dominion University chose a new president Brian Hemphill, who led the creation of a health professions collaborative in Roanoke, where there are now two regional medical schools to our one.”

Yep. Thought the same thing when they hired him. Makes a lot of sense.

Is there some new change with EVMS and ODU?
I just received this magazine in the mail from EVMS. I have never been to EVMS for anything, and only a few professors at ODU know I moved to CT.

I know there is a relationship with ODU/EVMS in the Public Health arena, also ODU's Honor's College Pre-Med is almost assured entrance to EVMS. It's a matter of time, and the right people shaking things up before a complete merger finally happens.

I think Youngkin will prove to be a strong advocate for this merger. It makes too much sense and he has roots in the area. I predict he pushes this hard. It's too good for the Commonwealth not to do it.

Northam it's also from the area and literally went to EVMS. Not sure why Youngkin would push it more. Honestly feel like the Democratic party would be one to push for the merger (creating a larger public University) than the Republican party would

To be honest neither parties care about Hampton Roads and it didn't change even if its a HR native in power or not. That is my 2 cents and i don't even live in the State which makes it that much clear for anyone paying attention. Its all about Richmond and Nova.

I doubt Northam, an EVMS grad, is really excited about the idea of the merger since EVMS is the only party in this situation that is opposed. Further, I do think the new admin offers some opportunity for Hampton Roads. Northam is from the Eastern Shore. That isn't really HR. With the incoming admin, all three statewide office holders have HR ties. Further, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake were instrumental in their being elected to state office. VB and Chesapeake are linchpins to any statewide success in VA for Republicans in the current landscape, and as such, I think this admin will pay a little more attention to us than the typical elected officials in this state.

Don't forget that Republican LT Governor elect Sears is an ODU grad. If the leaders in Richmond were to get involved she may provide some assistance to her alma mater.
