Thats just the headline. They voted "no confidence" in the consultant, not the concept. Their comments seem to indicated openness to a merger in theory, and some even seem to imply its a good idea and inevitable. This is buying time and leverage to get their employees the best deal, save some level of autonomy by pushing for an exclusive EVMS/ODU board to report to separate from the ODU board, and guarantees of funding. Get those items addressed and I think it may actually happen. Unless my reading comprehension is way worse than I thought.

It would be a desperately needed bit of good news for Old Dominion. Hopefully this will be high in the priority rankings of the new coming President and subsequent BoV appointments. A new direction is desperately needed. One focused on tangible academic excellence and positive image branding for the University. Growth will come through excellence - not meaningless social virtue signaling. We need to be a University with a University's mindset. Not a community college.

You contradict yourself with these two thoughts.

RE: EVMS - Now is the time.
First off, this deal seems entirely dirty, and inspired by corporate financial interests. It smells like Kern is schmoozing up our lovely governor, who also appears to be in favor of the consultants recommendations, for whatever reason. Ethics aside though, as a supporter of the University I can’t help but be in favor of this deal.

EVMS seems to have two contentions with the recommendations. They are looking out for their staff, and they want to remain an independent entity. Their proposed “Eastern Virginia Health Sciences University at Old Dominion University” doesn’t seem like it would truly be “ours.”

So my question is, who really holds the bargaining power here? Does EVMS really have to consent, or can the state force their hand? Also, what leg do they have to stand on? If they are bleeding funds, what alternative do they have? EVMS’ counter proposal was “hey sentara, give us more money.” What happens when Sentara responds, “nah.”

It will be really interesting to see how this plays out, but EVMS seems to be quite hamstrung. ODU has a chance for a MASSIVE gift to fall in our lap, and we need to do everything possible to facilitate that.

It seems like we are in a great position.

RE: EVMS - Now is the time.
Everyone needs to do some research. Very few Meds Schools are not tied directly to a hospital system and / or a University. Why is that ? Think about it. 1) They can not generate enough revenue via tuition and research grants to grow, stay competitive, and solvent. 2) EVMS had to start clinics for their staff and graduates to generate revenue. They are being pushed out of that space by Sentara. Also, Clinics push patients to either a hospital or testing facility for additional testing or treatment which is where the big money is. EVMS has none of that. 3) The overhead costs for a Medical school are huge !! Those costs can be dramatically reduced if they are absorbed by a Hospital system and/or Universities. Finally, the State is not going to continue to pump money into EVMS.

EVMS has to do something. They know it. They want to try to dictate the terms for this merger. Sentara wants the clinic side and over time they can reduce the redundancy. ODU wants the research and academic side provided they can reduce the overhead costs for performing those functions. This is gonna happen just when. ODU needs to immediately increase the profile of the students they are admitting into the Health sciences, Biology, and Life Sciences academic programs.

The other part that needs to be considered is residency programs. EVMS residents mostly work at Sentara and CHKD. That money flows back to EVMS. Sentara and CHKD are tired of sending all of that money back to them, when they aren't providing any of the resources for the program.

RE: EVMS - Now is the time.
My understanding from the medical people I know is that Medical College of Virginia graduates hate that the school's name was erased in favor of VCU Health Services. They think the VCU association waters down the MCV reputation. In time that will fade as MCV graduates retire or die and they're replaced by VCU graduates, but alumni are sensitive about losing the unique culture of their school, and even if nobody's confusing it with Johns Hopkins or Harvard, it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of EVMS alumni are cringing at the thought of being ODU Health or whatever the final name ends up being (RPI and MCV merged to become VCU in 1969 but MCV was still the medical school's name until the early 2000s).

How does EVMS becoming part of ODU affect ODU financially. Won't they create a drain on our budget? Is there any tangible, short term advantage?

Couple of things...1) ODU's academic profile and ability to raise $, student count, and more effectively partner will be raised substantially because we can count the EVMS research grant money as part of ODU. 2) We can eliminate redundancy in overhead and possibly facilities so that the state $ can flow more to ODU to manage. There are risks to ODU but I believe the benefits out weight the risks.

Agreed. Id say there are risks to EVMS as well, but most of those same advantages will apply to them too, making the benefits far outweigh the risks. This could truly be a win, win, win.

This is good. The only issue I have is sharing it with NSU. We get a lot less exposure and community good will from not calling it the ODU school of public health and plastering ODU all over everything. Just like calling the place by the amphitheater the VBHEC instead of the ODU VB campus. ODU has 90% of the offerings but little credit.

The VBHEC is now ODU-VA Beach. I'm not sure when the change was made but I have seen signs on the side of 264 with the chef hat logo and VA Beach under it for a year or two. This new school of public health will eventually be ours too, just like EVMS.

While this merger was being discussed, EVMS hired a PR firm for $150k that wrote negative stories about Sentara.

Talk about biting the hand that feeds them. If they tick off Sentara they won’t have anywhere else to turn except the state. I have no inside info, but it seems inevitable that the ODU EVMS merger happens. Whether it’s next year or 50 years from now. It makes too much sense not to happen sometime.

Correct. It’s a wild move that makes little sense and reeks of desperation.

I don’t understand why they don’t wholeheartedly embrace it. I get not wanting to lose some autonomy and change is hard, but the benefits are certainly there for EVMS in this merger too.
