They see major revenue streams in healthcare that can be used to keep their Universities academically strong and financially solvent. If ODU does not do something soon to generate new streams of revenue it will have a hard time with a growing reliance on $ from the S.

If VT or VCU do that it would be completely disrespectful to EVMS and ODU. We need to own our backyard. ODU and EVMS should team up to keep them out. It may be a matter of survival for both schools. If the state can support them moving into the area they can support ODU/EVMS to do the same. I’d throw up if I had to live in HR with VCU crap all around. ODU needs to be proactive and take the lead in this. ODU/EVMS medical centers should be in every HR city.

State was not supportive of this hence why it died once others around the region pushed our legislative reps got involved. VCU and VT were going to do this primarily with their own revenues and endowments and with a small investment from the state. They have billions because of their Med schools.

The point is others see the blue of the region and EVMS. it begs the question why ODU/Sentara/EVMS have not formed a closer public /private partnership.

My guess is that money and red tape are two of the bigger reasons why.

That would be huge! I don't think it would happen though. If that happened, ODU would be more attractive for students (who this is really about) and I don't see other VA school allowing this. Look at all the hate we get because of football.

I think if EVMS really wanted to merge with ODU, enough support could be found to make it happen. I suspect EVMS isn't really interested in a merger with ODU right now.

If ODU's endowment got into the $500 million range, EVMS would probably become interested. That kind of financial security would be hard to pass up.

Bingo.

If invested right and donations keep growing that $500 million goal might be a achievable as soon as 10 years away.

Just saw that the MPH program, previously linked with EVMS, will now be solely run by ODU on campus. Anyone have any insight?

Pretty simple. They didn't have the staff to offer it independently before. But since ODU is putting more resources into the college of health sciences. This growth has allowed the addition of the bachelor's and master's of public health.

Okay. Just seems odd for us to be cutting ties in certain areas when we'd like to ultimately absorb them.

ODU needs to step up its game, but... while I respect EVMS, it's pretty much the ODU of medical schools. A good respectable school with a lot of potential, but its not even MCV, much less Johns Hopkins in prestige. If MCV can slum it with VCU, EVMS shouldn't be too good to partner up with Old Dominion.

It took an act of the Assembly to smush MCV and Richmond Professional Institute into the entity you know and love as VCU. MCV grads are still angry that the MCV name was dropped nearly 20 years ago in favor of VCU Health Services.

I am looking at it this way....We both need each other. Plus add a private partnership (Sentara) and you have a continuous academic and professional pipeline of talent. Then add the potential for increased research $ coming into ODU and this whole thing should be a winner. Others (MCV and VT/Carrilion) see the advantage. I can't believe an integrated approach has not been made to the GA. Will it require more $ from the GA ...yes but the return is huge for the region.

Absolutely dead on. It's a no brainer. It's so obvious. It's literally a misuse of state funds for this not to happen.

I will add that there are 2 others items that might need to be considered. !) academic admissions standards and 2) if ODU wants to move to a better / higher profile conference this merger is a MUST !!! The Va. GA must see the benefit but always votes to keep the region down.
