While I sincerely doubt he would have had as much success here given his lack of east coast connections, its worth noting what the other finalist for the UNCW job 2 years ago is doing at UC Santa Barbara.

The Gauchos, who went 6-22 in 2016-17 in the final season of the Bob Williams era (though they did go 19-14 the year before and reached the Vegas 16 Semifinals), are currently 16-5 this year and 39-24 overall under former Arizona assistant Pasternack since he arrived in 2017. They're 5-2 (t-2nd) in the Big West this season, and went 11-5 (t-2nd) last year. In the NET rankings, they're # 140. By the RPI, # 149. And per KenPom, they're # 143 (# 99 Offense, # 191 Defense).

I think you are over playing the East coast thing. He could have surround himself with the right people. + We have had other coaches without connections here do well.

I'm not saying he wouldn't have been a solid coach here. Just saying I don't think he would have had AS much success.

It's not a tough sell to get midwest kids here, which Wainwright/Brownell/Rodney Terry were able to do here. It's a much tougher sell to get west coast kids here. You need to be able to recruit North Carolina, especially since the out of state tuition waiver was taken away by the NCAA.

With the cloud hanging over Sean Miller and Arizona I am kinda glad he is not here.

there was a cloud over Pitino too and we took Keatts. That worked out pretty well.

Well that is true, but this one involves the FBI. One of Pasternak’s fellow assistant at Arizona just pleaded guilty to a felony.

Absolutely, but its still essential to get at least SOME of your key recruits from within the state because of our budget limitations.

And I still stand by the statement that it would be really tough to get west coast kids to come here. Midwest and northeast are very different sales pitches.

Pasternack was in the mix for one and only one reason. We thought he was a lock. He realized quickly he didn't want to come to the east coast and we were in a mess after that.

FBI was involved with Pitino, still is.

The Pitino thing with the FBI was when Keatts was already here. He had nothing to do with recruiting Brian Bowen, which is what the issue the FBI was investigating.

Regardless, point still stands. Both guys worked for coaches amid scandles, one of whom lost is job, the other i can't imagine won't

I definitely agree with you though. Recruiting in NC is a must.

Can’t help but think he was at least our 2nd choice and was ahead of CB. The Rountree connection is the “one and only” reason I assume you are referring to. I think he would have struggled here personally.

Could it be worse than where we are at now?

Who are the top mid-major players from North Carolina? One player from North Carolina who went to a mid-major and the NBA was Eric Maynor.
