Now lately, it has been NMSU's winning DNA that has allowed them to squeak out wins; with buzzer beater and timely defensive plays. Heck, NMSU has posted records of 28-6 the last two seasons; much more impressive records now. And, they're well on their way to another impressive record this season; 19-4 currently. Yet, winning the WAC has become much more of a chore. NMSU is by no means a sure thing in Las Vegas anymore. Right now, NMSU just knows how to close out games better than the field. And, they will use that winning attitude to navigate the WAC tourney come March. Once one of the other WAC teams figures out how to closeout games in similar fashion, then things will get interesting. NMSU has become everyone's "white whale". So, NMSU gets everyone's best game all season long. If NMSU relaxes mentally, they lose; as they found out against CBU. Thursday night, GCU proved its still not ready to have the target on its back; like NMSU has had for many years. GCU had a leg up on NMSU. GCU wins against UTRGV and NMSU loses to CSUB, and the WAC regular season championship was their's for the taking. And, in one night that tested character, both team's fortunes changed. Now NMSU is in the drivers seat for a conference title; even with a possible lose to GCU tonight.

NMSU's remaining WAC games...
@ Grand Canyon
vs. Utah Valley
vs. Seattle
vs. UT Rio Grande
@ UM Kansas City
@ Chicago State
vs. Cal Baptist

GCU's remaining WAC games...
vs. New Mexico State
@ UM Kansas City
@ Chicago State
vs. Cal Baptist
vs. Cal State Bakersfield
@ Utah Valley
@ Seattle U
I wouldn't count out Utah Valley either if GCU beats NMSU tonight. UVU would then just need to run the table guaranteeing everyone has at least three losses. No easy task for them since they still need to go to Las Cruces, but definitely in the realm of possibility.

Even though CSUB is currently in 3rd, they are probably out of the championship race. NMSU holds the sweep over them. And, CSUB still has to go to GCU and UVU. UVU needs to upset NMSU in LC to even up the series and have a chance at the conference 1st place tie. However, NMSU still holds the tiebreaker by virtue of sweeping CSUB. With GCU's loss to UTRGV, GCU now needs to sweep UVU and hope NMSU losses to UVU in LC. Or, hope CBU finishes above UTRGV in the standing; given that NMSU "probably" beats both UTRGV and CBU in LC. Right now, if NMSU and GCU finish in a tie, NMSU holds the tie breaker if they sweep UTRGV. And, if NMSU sweeps UVU, then the pressure mounts for GCU to win in Orem.

Some good points about the WAC becoming more competitive. I agree, NMSU has become a better basketball team out-of-conference since Menzies left. The one thing about NMSU, they don't quit and they expect to win these close games. They are tough mentally.

That said, NMSU wins over GCU and CSUB are not something they want to come close to repeating. Against GCU, they went from a three point lead with 30 seconds left to a one point deficit with 13 seconds left due to two turnovers by AJ Harris. They then had a chance to take the lead back, but Terrell Brown missed two free throws with eight seconds left. Fortunately for NMSU, Trey Drechsel missed the front end of a one-and-one with six seconds left and Johnny McCants, who is 5 of 19 on three pointers this season, throws up a prayer from half court at the buzzer. NMSU actually collapsed down the stretch at home and it took a prayer being answered for them to pull it out.

The CSUB game was a complete collapse by the Runners. You know you that the Aggies need turnovers or they need to put you on the line. You know you are going to see full-court pressure and trapping. This is something that the Runners practice all the time. Their defense lives on full court pressure and trapping throughout the game. Their offense sees this every day. Amazingly, NMSU came from 10 down in 90 seconds without hitting a three point shot. That is because the Runners had four turnovers in a 34 second period of time.

Against CBU, it was 68-64 with 1:17 left. CBU went 14 for 14 from the line in the last 1:17 with no turnovers. They didn't collapse at home against a better team. They handled the defensive pressure and they are 4th in the nation in free throw shooting.

NMSU won a close game at UTRGV and lost a close game against Drake on a neutral court. In the last few minutes of a back-and-forth game, NMSU is going to be tough to beat. But they can be beaten if you play disciplined basketball. I think GCU and UVU have the best shot at pulling that off.

Winning the regular season title earns the auto bid to the NIT and a first round matchup with Chicago State. After that, it will not be easy. As you mentioned, the conference is more competitive and the tournament is on a neutral court.

Question is, will that be a live broadcast or is ESPN 3 the only way to watch live?

GCU home games are all live streamed through the GCU.tv and the University's YouTube channel, as well as ESPN3. Pre-game starts at 6:30pm MST on the GCU platforms, but I don't think ESPN3 picks up the stream until 7pm.

Thanks man. Should be a great game.

Ivan dressed and warming up with the Aggies. Great to see, given the pain it appeared he was in immediately after the injury.

He didn't tear anything. Never heard what kind of injury.

Listening to the UTRGV vs CSUB game and the announcers are still garbage. I was worried the GCU announcers would have been but they were pretty good for homers. Gave a shout out to one of our announcers for having to pronounce Aurrecoechea every home game.

Good game by both teams. Seems like they left it all in there. That’s what you want to see is both teams playing their best and See who wins. Championship isn’t won yet but it feels good to have a lead at this point.

Congrats, Aggies. That championship DNA and desire was on display tonight. Have to respect the standard NMSU has set, and the rest of the conference still aspires to achieve.

I thought I heard it was a season ending injury. Maybe I imagined that? Either way, great for him to be available. With Jans constant rotation of players, he may get as many minutes as usual.

It was thought to be that as they did not say when he would be back. He took it easier tonight than usual.

Was a little upset about 22+/- free throws for GCU vs 4 for UTRGV midway through 2nd half, but the last 4 minutes more than made up for it.

RGV is on a nice 3 game streak. Their loss to UVU was 21 I believe, but their other WAC losses have all been very close. I'm also impressed that they played Houston to 5 points earlier in the season. I'm not sure how much they return, but it sure is nice seeing them become more of a force.

Can you pull one off Saturday in Bakersfield?

Hope so. But true happiness can only be achieved by beating NMSU. Even taking the WAC tournament would not be as satisfying as just one win against you. It's become a white whale kind of thing.

I get what you're saying, but taking the WAC tournament would be pretty sweet--wouldn't you agree?

Pulled it off in Bakersfield but it was even tougher than GCU. Winn, Smith, Varner all fouled out.

Congrats to NMSU on a big win in Phoenix and basically clinching the WAC regular season title. I did not watch the game because I was watching the CBU vs UMKC game on Fox Sports West. Xavier Bishop was out for UMKC, which did not help. CBU won 70-60.

CSUB had another classic collapse. I did not watch that game, but they led 68-58 with 5:36 left in regulation and went scoreless the last 5:36. UTRGV should get credit for their comeback, but something is not right in Bakersfield.

They did look burned out toward the end, but UTRGV is a 2nd half team. Scores by half for last six games:

Seattle 28 39
NMSU 27 34
CSU 36 41
UMKC 30 45
GCU 30 42

RE: WAC basketball week 14
With last nights win, NMSU has carved out a three game lead for the regular season championship. GCU (7-3) is two games back of NMSU (9-1). But since NMSU swept GCU, GCU would need for NMSU to lose three more games in order for them to win the WAC. Right now, I don't know if there is a path for any school to catch NMSU unless NMSU has a major collapse in its final six conference games. Because GCU has already beaten every WAC team at least once (except NMSU), they serve as the tie breaker just incase anyone ties NMSU for first in the final standings. NMSU would need to lose three of its last six conference games in order to open the door for GCU or UVU to win the WAC. Additionally, GCU or UVU would need to run the table with their remaining conference games.

GCU doesn't need to do anything.... We all heard Dan it just comes down to 3 days in Vegas anyways.... #Puke

I love my Lopes my school and even like Dan but yikes. I know its more of an emotional response to what happened to the team this week (0-2) but goodness. Also maybe he will keep his heavy words to himself on regards to how good the team is and allow others to state their opinions and he can just focus on coaching.
