The one caveat would be if NMSU could win a tournament game. Would really help a lot of schools budgets.

GCU has never won a regular season title in basketball or the WAC post-season tournament. They should win first before they are considered a dominant team. CSUB has won both and UVU won a regular season title. But I think we can see GCU coming and that is a good thing. They will force the other teams to raise their game. The WAC needs to become a multi-bid conference.

I didn't say GCU was dominant. Finishing 2nd isn't dominant. The odds are like 85% chance we see GCU-NMSU again in the final. UVU has about 10% chance to represent and the rest of the teams combined have 5%. That's not a competitive league.

I see the opposite effect where teams at the bottom end give up and slash athletic budgets or move to a cheaper conference or d2. Can't compete with a publicly listed team.

I'll put a casual $10 Venmo bet with you getting a 15% extra ($11.50) if you win that NMSU/GCU ISN'T in the Finals. 100% jumping to conclusions man.

Was a little upset about 22+/- free throws for GCU vs 4 for UTRGV midway through 2nd half, but the last 4 minutes more than made up for it.

RGV is on a nice 3 game streak. Their loss to UVU was 21 I believe, but their other WAC losses have all been very close. I'm also impressed that they played Houston to 5 points earlier in the season. I'm not sure how much they return, but it sure is nice seeing them become more of a force.

Can you pull one off Saturday in Bakersfield?

Thanks for posting that. I was only able to listen, so I missed seeing how those steals and turnovers came about. Fun to see. Thanks!

I disagree. This is the most parody the WAC has ever had. The conference is literally 7-teams deep, and would already be/will be 8 when SU gets healthy this month. WAC is at its best form overall yet

Seattle U / Utah Valley rescheduled for February 26th with snow storm hitting Seattle

Better for SU this way. Everyone will be healthy by Feb 18th for the first time besides Delante Jones.

*Knocks on wood* everyone besides Jones, who is week to week, will he healthy on Feb 18th. That gives SU a healthy roster now with depth experience for the last 6 WAC games including GCU, UVU, CSUB all at home. Watch out for Seattle U in Vegas if they stay healthy.

Depleted roster was competitive with CSUB/UVU first time. GCU always toughest matchup but fully healthy will only help. If SU faces NMSU, despite being down 2.5 starters, they outscored the Aggies in the 22 minutes Myles Carter was on the floor. In 18 without him, they ended up losing by 17. If he stays out of foul trouble, and with Kavas back and team healthy, watch for another nail biter if teams meet in Vegas.

This past week was the FIRST time Seattle U has had enough healthy guys on the team to run a 5on5 scrimmage at practice during WAC play. Team hasn't been healthy since entering the Cal game Dec 29th. Finally getting better. Just stay that way.

Congrats on the win, Aggies. Surely, business is bumpin for cardiologists all across Las Cruces. The physical and mental work Coach Jans and his team have put in to be ready for moments like these has been on full display, supporting the assertion that luck is only what happens when preparation meets opportunity. Tip of the cap to all.

I recently gave props to CSUB posters, so this isn’t a jab at them. Bako has the worst homer announcers I have ever heard. I’ve heard them three times this year (ChiSt, UMKC and NMSU). Just embarrassing and unprofessional. Dudes should look up: Scully, Vin for some pointers. Vin was the Dodgers announcer for 67 years from the Bronx all the way to LA. If an alien was dropped on this planet and heard Vin, he’d have no idea Vin worked for the Dodgers. GCU, your announcers aren’t much better. Just call the x’s and o’s and leave the homerism at the door. Ridiculous...

Congrats to UTRGV and their fans. They truly won that game. And, congrats to the Aggies, what a wild finish.

Sorry this is late, I needed the night to process all that went on yesterday. One of the other posters mentioned how it was a tough day with the loss of Gerard and losing an important game at home. I hate that I care so much. We just move forward and hope for a good game on Saturday. If any Aggie fans are in the house, let us know and say hello.

Agree in concept. Yes, tourney looks (right now) to possibly be VERY interesting, especially how upsets tend to happen in the heightened emotion. Might be interesting to see how that affects Vegas attendance by schools.

They actually kind of did that towards the end of regulation when Holden fouled an Aggie shooting an off balanced 3-pointer that allowed the Aggies to pull within 4 points. After the Lopes lost, I was really cheering for Bakersfield and that silly foul really got the comeback rolling for NMSU.

RE: WAC basketball week 14
I was at the Chicago State-CBU game last night and I have to say, that was a very unimpressive performance by CSU. Lance Irvin has a huge challenge ahead of him. They had a real difficult time just executing basic offensive plays. The defensive effort was inconsistent and they got killed on the boards. Lance Irvin needs an infusion of talent at Chicago State. The final score of 94-44 could have been much worse.

I didn't see the CSUB collapse against NMSU, but I saw that the Runners had a ten point lead with about 90 seconds left. I looked at the play-by-play for the last 90 seconds and I counted four offensive rebounds by NMSU, three Ricky Holden turnovers and a missed free throw. Then in OT NMSU gets a wide open look for the game winner. A classic collapse. A bad loss for Barnes.

GCU losing an 11 point lead in the 2nd half is very surprising, but UTRGV is much improved. That might be a team, like Seattle, that will be tough to beat in the tournament. Seven of the nine WAC schools have winning records.

Oh, you are right, they DID in regulation which let to points. DUMB, foul!! The OT 3 that beat us was actually a nice look.

And Bobcat...if you're ANY KIND of CSUB fan....you're better off not seeing it! 04-jawdrop At least my hockey team is doing well! And, softball began the season with a win today.

Hope so. But true happiness can only be achieved by beating NMSU. Even taking the WAC tournament would not be as satisfying as just one win against you. It's become a white whale kind of thing.

So, GCU fans, question for you. On the WAC website, there is a link to the article about the NMSU game tonight. It has a link to GCU TV which takes one to a YouTube page that has an announcement for the game.

Question is, will that be a live broadcast or is ESPN 3 the only way to watch live?

GCU home games are all live streamed through the GCU.tv and the University's YouTube channel, as well as ESPN3. Pre-game starts at 6:30pm MST on the GCU platforms, but I don't think ESPN3 picks up the stream until 7pm.

RE: WAC basketball week 14
There has been a false impression that NMSU has weakened in recent years; become more vulnerable. But in reality the WAC has become much stronger recently. The competition has simply closed the gap. In years prior (under Menzies), NMSU would lose 10-12 games in a season but still look totally dominant during WAC play. Now lately, it has been NMSU's winning DNA that has allowed them to squeak out wins; with buzzer beater and timely defensive plays. Heck, NMSU has posted records of 28-6 the last two seasons; much more impressive records now. And, they're well on their way to another impressive record this season; 19-4 currently. Yet, winning the WAC has become much more of a chore. NMSU is by no means a sure thing in Las Vegas anymore. Right now, NMSU just knows how to close out games better than the field. And, they will use that winning attitude to navigate the WAC tourney come March. Once one of the other WAC teams figures out how to closeout games in similar fashion, then things will get interesting. NMSU has become everyone's "white whale". So, NMSU gets everyone's best game all season long. If NMSU relaxes mentally, they lose; as they found out against CBU. Thursday night, GCU proved its still not ready to have the target on its back; like NMSU has had for many years. GCU had a leg up on NMSU. GCU wins against UTRGV and NMSU loses to CSUB, and the WAC regular season championship was their's for the taking. And, in one night that tested character, both team's fortunes changed. Now NMSU is in the drivers seat for a conference title; even with a possible lose to GCU tonight.

NMSU's remaining WAC games...
@ Grand Canyon
vs. Utah Valley
vs. Seattle
vs. UT Rio Grande
@ UM Kansas City
@ Chicago State
vs. Cal Baptist

GCU's remaining WAC games...
vs. New Mexico State
@ UM Kansas City

vs. Cal Baptist
vs. Cal State Bakersfield
@ Utah Valley
@ Seattle U

I wouldn't count out Utah Valley either if GCU beats NMSU tonight. UVU would then just need to run the table guaranteeing everyone has at least three losses. No easy task for them since they still need to go to Las Cruces, but definitely in the realm of possibility.
