RE: 2019 UNCW Baseball Thread
Per Coach Hood in the podcast, freshman Adam Smith has a real shot at taking over the starting SS duties, assuming Jones is utilized primarily as a CF.

My guess is that would likely kick Doug Angeli out of the starting lineup and put Meadows back at 2B.

Interesting.

He has struggled in the field and has not done well even at 1B. Jones would be the logical leadoff man-fast,switch hitter.

I can see something like that. But if Kep plays 1B, then I'd put Zayicek in RF and open up the DH spot for Baldwin.

1. Greg Jones CF (S)
2. Jackson Meadows SS ®
3. Riley Zayicek RF (L)
4. Kep Brown 1B ®
5. Cole Weiss 3B (L)
6. Brooks Baldwin DH (S)
7. Zach Bridges C (L)
8. Doug Angeli 2B ®
9. Noah Bridges LF (L)
Could be a lineup but I think they like Suggs in RF and hitting. Better fielder than Zayicek and better hitter than Baldwin. Suggs looks like he will be in the lineup barring injury. He was in top 3 hitters in the fall and by all accounts can really swing it. He is a righty so maybe Baldwin gets some at bats for him . Its a good problem to have. No way either one of them hit in the 6 hole -maybe 8 or 9.

The A-10 Baseball Poll came out on Tuesday. St. Joe's (our first opponent this weekend) was picked to finish 10th of the 13 teams.

D1Baseball.com has them finishing 9th.

Opening Day Preview: Saint Joseph's & VMI

Defending CAA Champs open with four games this weekend against SJU and VMI

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The Seahawks open their final season under the direction of Head Coach Mark Scalf this Friday when they host Saint Joseph's at Brooks Field at 4 p.m.

Joining the Seahawks and Eagles this weekend are the Keydets of VMI. Three teams will each play four games during the opening weekend of the season. VMI and SJU play Friday at noon.

UNCW enters the looking to defend its Colonial Athletic Association championship and was picked in a tie for second in the league's preseason poll of the coaches. Elon was picked to win the title followed by Northeastern and the Seahawks, each with 54 points.

Rounding out the CAA top-six in order were Charleston, Delaware and James Madison.

Greg Jones, Kep Brown, Cole Weiss and Jackson Meadows were selected preseason All-CAA.

This weekend's rotation for UNCW:

Friday: Luke Gesell | Saturday game 1: Brody Lawson; game 2: Landen Roupp | Sunday: Gage Herring

The Hawks and Keydets last played at Brooks Field in 2011 and 2017, respectively. The Seahawks own 2-0 marks against each program.

The Seahawks continue their season-opening homestand on Tuesday (Feb. 19) against Sunbelt Conference favorite, Coastal Carolina. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

RE: 2019 UNCW Baseball Thread
They're gonna try to play 3 today. UNCW-SJU will now be scheduled to begin approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game of the day (VMI-SJU). Game 3 will be UNCW-VMI, and will begin appx. 45 minutes after Game 2.

VMI and SJU are off to a slow start: No score in the bottom of the 2nd.

The VMI-SJU game continues to move at a snail's pace. 8-3 Keydets in the top of the 8th.

Gesell is pitching well. Thru 4 he's given up 2 unearned runs and allowed just 5 total baserunners.
