A standout defensive performance on Saturday afternoon propelled Toledo (18-4, 6-3 MAC) to a wire-to-wire 69-55 road win over Northern Illinois

Two guys who just killed us last year, Ringo and German were minor factors this year. So far. The defense is so improved. Quick guards aren’t giving us nearly the trouble they have in the past. Good team D and a couple big erasers make a huge difference.

You sure? Because he often plays with just five, leaving off the low E and tuning them open.

defense is better. marreon is improving. not a great defender, but has good possessions and makes steals. littelson is a solid gritty and pretty versatile defender. willie is often good enough to handle small forwards or bigger or smaller players in a switch. edu is great off the bench. darrington is pretty good too. he fouls a lot but i actually like that out a bench player. make it difficult for them. you're only on the court 12 or 15 minutes use some fouls. this bench guards 4 deep (edu, littleson, darrington, alderson) and is actually often a better defensive unit than the first team, which has more offense.

however, buffalo has really good guards. and they have bigger guys who can do guard things. guarding buffalo is tough. and even if you do great at that. you still need to score to beat them. they will get points on good defenses.

Count 'em. (I know, but the black Tele is strung up with 6. That's why I made the astute observation.)

Would not include Alderson, no production from this guy.

Very good D, but the offense production has fallen off. Jaelan has been in a slum, don't know what is going there. Perhaps he should come off the bench. While on the bench, cage what is going on the floor.

alderson is solid on defense. that isn't in the numbers. my point was all 4 bench guys guard you

Open G-tuning whether you mute the 6th string or only have 5. Early Stones mostly in Standard tuning.

Knew a guy that had worked the downtown Grinnells. Told me about the time Buddy Holly stopped in to get some extra strings.

RE: Not Fade Away - TOLEDO TAKES OVER FIRST PLACE IN THE MAC WEST
We are about half way through the MAC, I think.

Mid season Christmas list;

1) Sanford finds his shot (and as someone mentioned), drive to the hoop (maybe the teams scouted that and have shut it down - film could tell us that), which was part of his game before if I remember right.

2) Keep focusing on the defense - that's what won the NIU game (hat tip to Navi on that game as well).

3) Take care of the basketball - don't force things - even when you need to make a shot. Case and point - Sanford took the first shot and missed against NIU - then became a bricklayer. The mentality seems to be - keep shooting and one will fall, then you are out of your slump. But he threw up a bunch of dumb shots just trying to make one. No - not smart - work the ball. Others are guilty too - not to pick on Sanford. The shot will come - patience. Run the sets.

4) Edu needs to continue to improve - and he will. If he could just fire on only a couple of cylinders at the offensive end of the floor. Turnover machine too - need to make better decisions with the ball - I think he has done that in the last couple of games. He can be a game changer.

5) They need a pit bull. Someone needs to step up and be the guy they look to - the guy who "stirs the drink" as the radio guys say - the guy who fires them up - wants the ball - makes the shot. We don't have the Tre'Shaun Fletchers, the Juices, or Nathan Boothes. They are almost too team oriented to a fault. I don't know who that may be. I would have thought it would be Sanford this year. Still time.

6) And for Pete's sake - beat Ball State for a change.

I’d settle for winning out at home and #6. Not happy, but settle.
