The Athletic Carolina is reporting that NHL Hurricanes owner Ton Dundon made a "nine figure investment" last week as the site reports that the AAF was running out of cash mid-week and meeting payroll was the main issue. Granted, they're the only outlet reporting this but Dundon is reportedly to be named Chairman today or tomorrow.

This is not good but Dundon is now the lead investor, so Thiel and his Founders Fund and Chernin now take a back seat or got $$$ to get out now at some loss.

Know that Dundon has obviously been successful, but he became a billionaire via technology as Top Golf.

Here is a USA today article about it citing the athletic piece. Cannot be q good sign if they are already having cashflow issues in week 2

Never a good sign when a start-up is seeking a nine-figure bailout two weeks in...

Tom Dundon seems to be pretty tight with his cash, so the fact that he's willing to lay down $250 million is actually a good sign in my opinion. He must be convinced he's going to make it back and then some.

RE: What's the tv value of the AAF and XFL?
If this news is true, it illustrates two things:
1-The league was tremendously underfunded and rushed. Orlando Team President Mike Waddell did a Reddit AMA over the weekend and said he was the third Orlando employee hired. Spurrier was the first in April 2018, followed by the GM, then him. Waddell started on August 28, 2018, and then had to hire 24 full-time staffers by January 1. So they were taking seat deposits $50 at a time for longer than they were on the ground in the eight cities trying to get local sponsorship and selling tickets. Not naming the cities at once was another problem, but if Orlando, their first team announces didn't get staffed until late fall, the last two named didn't have a chance.

2-The attendance numbers are for what they distributed. San Antonio had 10,000 Week 1 seats bought by Red McCombs for the USO, and the team stated prior that 4,500 were to be given to them weekly. Birmingham was giving them out at police checkpoints for Week 2.

This more than the possibility of not meeting team payroll, but the ancillary items like office rent, stadium rent, the player's housing, their production costs, merchandising (a lot of their store still has little in stock). Heck, Hines Ward, Justin Tuck and the other former players on the Exec. Board aren't cheap.

Dundon wants their IP primarily. He needed to see the app work in realtime so he could see how it could work not just with his NHL team, but also at Topgolf and with his Toptracer technology which is used by NBC for their PGA Tour events. Since 2017, the PGA Tour allows phones on the course, so a game similar to the AAF app could be used with Toptracer.

No matter the motive, $250 million is....well, $250 million.
