Who's really going to spend big bucks on tickets for this league? Ridiculous they don't start at $10 and try to appeal to families.

$75 for 5 games is $15 per ticket. $15 per game for season ticket price. $20 for per game. That's not out of line for minor league sports.
I pay more than 15 bucks to watch AA baseball in Biloxi, MS. Price is more than reasonable. $5.00 beers and it's a good deal.

Yes, but are those the worst seats in the house? Is this the first year of AA baseball in Biloxi for an unproven league with no top professional league affiliation? No
Most first-run movie tickets will set you back $13 or more each, unless if you are willing to go on a weeknight or see a matinee. That in all honesty is what the AAF competes against - all of the other options for a person’s entertainment dollar.

Yes, but the AAF is not a “first-run movie”. It’s a redbox rental at best and should be priced as such. If it’s successful and gains traction, you can always raise prices gradually later. If $15 is your cheapest seat for a new, non-first run league, you’re doing it wrong.

Turn on NFLN right now and look at the crowd in Tempe.

I watched some of the games today, for a first game teams seemed to be decent. Lots of former NFL players. The NFL needs a developmental league and I can see this being it.

Agree the uniforms suck. They look like those generic TV commercial football team uniforms. They should have hired some young hungry designers to come up with something better.

I mean for Arizona, I'd probably instead of green, I'd go with a rust color against yellow to reflect the desert colors. And instead of the hotshots, maybe call them the cacti, ocelots, or even (one of my favorite Sonora desert animals) the Ringtails. Just a minimal amount of imagination and you can come up with a name that stands out.

I like the colors of Salt Lake better, but the helmet pattern looks like it came off a soap bar package, you know the generic brands at a Dollar store.

I actually thought maybe a little more, around 25k. It felt a lot like a college bowl game. People were definitely very excited. I think if the city continues to embrace the team they’ll do very well. Playing on UCF’s campus was also very smart. There were a decent number of college students there and I imagine that’ll increase. It should also be noted that the weather was pretty blah all day and it rained on and off throughout the game but the crowd remained. Wish I lived closer!

Do they sell booze? Might be interested in driving over to Atlanta for one of these games just for the novelty of it.

I would not be shocked if it happens at some point either. Some of these franchises will inevitably falter due to poor performance or management and a merged league could take the top 4-5 franchises from each.

Yup! It was a fun time. Definitely worth the drive in my case.

Thing is, Vince doesn't merge. None of his businesses before have done that. They just go away. A merger also means the assumption or combination of debt.

With only 11,751 in Tempe and 17,039 in Birmingham, AAF won't meet player payroll with those numbers. Arizona's next home game is the night of March 3, the same day of the IFL's Rattlers' home opener. I wonder who will draw more?

Also, San Antonio sold 10,000 tickets at a group rate to former Spurs owner Red McCombs and given to the USO. Apparently, they're giving away 4,500 seats a game to active member military families.

Paid time. League bought the time and sold the commercials themselves.

The website is terrible.

Looks like basic information like player stats and standings aren't even on it.

And Ebersol has said for nearly a year that they were a tech company involved in football.

Quote:The long-term goal is to build a technology company that has a multi-billion-dollar valuation, and so we’re going to invest heavily in putting good football on the field that mimics in the NFL in terms of the quality and the type of play, so that our technology can travel to not only the NFL, but other sports and other industries.”

Originally, every game was to stream on the website and app, but yesterday, the league made post on Twitter that the CBSSN games would not be streamed on either platform, citing contracts. Why didn't anybody read the contract terms BEFORE making such a claim for the last seven months?
Note, there were quite a few streams of the game found via Reddit, and one stream of very good quality on YouTube.

RE: What's the tv value of the AAF and XFL?
Charlie sold fans on the idea of free steaming and an app with all sorts of bells and whistles that was supposed to change the way we watch football.

The fantasy seems to be non-existent on the app and they certainly did not give enough lead to time for fans to set leagues up, draft players, etc.

I was able to get a free streaming feed from their website during the Arizona-Salt Lake game but it was literally one camera with no graphics or commentators and the feed kept getting lost.

The game feature where you supposedly can guess the next play and earn points or whatever doesn't appear to exist either.

While a little glitchy, I did like the feature on the app that showed you where the players were. My wife thought it was pretty funny when someone stood too close to the sideline and randomly came into play.

I was happy to get to have some football in the off season and while lopsided, they seemed to be pretty good quality. I love that there are no PATs and I think the rest of the game needs to adopt this. The game seemed pretty well paced and went a lot faster than an NFL or college game. I wasn't terribly enamored with the lack of kickoffs but that on its own I don't see as a huge turn off.

I don't think it bodes well for the league that sold us on their technology advancements and in game fan experience that hardly any of it seems to be operational. I'm also a little worried about how poorly attended some of the games were, particularly Arizona.

Anyone else have similar experiences with AAF week 1?

Arizona has to get their attendance up badly or move to Portland.

I'm not sure if the XFL's idea of being in big cities works, but the AAF's model is totally different to begin with, so I'm not sure why they aren't in Portland/OKC/even Albuquerque or something.

Where would the play in Portland?
Peregrine, the holding company for the Timbers and Thorns, has already boxed out Portland State from Providence Park because they don't want to spend the 8-10 hours to stripe for football and Peregrine keeps virtually all gameday revenues per their master lease with the city. PSU is set to play all their games in Hillsboro, which seats 8,000./

They could play in Corvallis or Eugene and probably still do fairly well. PSU did play a game at Providence last year though...

No stadium in Oklahoma City.

AAF has the perfect city mix excluding Atlanta and Phoenix. Replace those with St. Louis and Hartford or Columbus and you have a very nice league.

If you are only drawing 17K in Birmingham (announced in June) and 20K in Orlando (announced in April), you have a problem in terms of selling your product. Then again, teams did not get locally based team execs hired until September with sales and support staffs weeks later. Memphis will be interesting this weekend as they were announced in May and had Team President the day they were announced.

Look at the Ticketmaster map for Saturday. They have more than half the stadium blocked off. There’s no way those tickets have been sold, as at least one person would be trying to re-sale them for such a hot event.

There is a demand curve, but I don't think dropping the price below $15 is going to put many more butts in seats. Because the "costs" aren't just the $15 ticket price, it's spending an afternoon or evening, it's the cost of eating stadium food for dinner, it's a couple of beers or sodas.

(I'm also assuming that $15 is the cheapest face-value seat. If I'm running an AAF franchise, I'm blanketing the local schools, sports leagues, scout troops, church groups with discount-group tickets to put butts in those seats and sell those hot dogs and Cokes)
