SBNation commentary on FCS drops from FBS incl. MAC
SBnation commentary on schools that should move to FCS and includes suggested changes in the MAC. Includes brief comment on TV impact on MAC, and some kudos to NIU. Just for interest.

I am lousy at posting links, so the url is https://www.sbnation.com/college-footbal...leave-fcs.

One of these days I'll remember how to do this.

whoa! it worked. anyway .... read and comment as you see fit.

RE: SBNation commentary on FCS drops from FBS incl. MAC
"The median non-power FBS football program was losing about $20 million per year a few years ago, according to the NCAA, while the median FCS team was down about $12 million."

what this doesn't take into account is the enrollment that is picked up from having the awareness because of a college football team. even students that don't attend games or have an interest in sports, still have an awareness of certain schools are because of their athletics. (University of Central Florida, University of Southern Florida, I'm looking at both of you.)

That said, the conference realignments proposed in the article look pretty, pretty good.

I have a hard time believing having a FBS football program moves the needle that much on enrollment...location/state funding and hence tuition offered would have a much bigger effect. Yes, some people are sports fans and want that, but many, many don't really care (if they become fans after they attend somewhere).

I think it would not have an immediate impact but a devastating long term impact to drop to FCS. Frazier wants this direction but as fans we have to be sure our opinion is heard to not demote NIU football.

How do you continue these false attacks on Frazier? The man just said in press conferences his goal is championships and New Year’s 6 bowls. If NIU does ever drop down it won’t be because Frazier wants that. Have you researched the salary difference for a FBS AD vs. FCS AD. Why would he want that. Geez, give it a rest.

Just like with Carey, expect him to hijack every single thread with his nonsense, but, now it will be non-stop regarding STF.

But does that translate into $12-$20 million in increased "profits" to break even on this?

Let's say a school has more of a reputation because of its football program. Does that draw more students to enroll? If so, how many? If a school loses $12MM but attracts students who spend $12MM, that still doesn't cut it because most of that $12MM is spent servicing the students (teachers, dorms, food, etc.). You'd probably need closer to $120MM in increased revenue from an enhanced reputation to wipe out the $12MM loss.

There it is...You made it 2 weeks from the Official Announcement of the hiring of Hammock to slam STF (and hijack another thread). Way to go.

Yet, somehow during the interview process poor Thomas Hammock was hired by STF hook, line and sinker...oblivious to ".....drop to FCS. Frazier wants this direction."

Your words. Shame on you.

How does a person just say something like this and expect to have any credibility? Do you really believe it or are you just gaslighting the Dog Pound?

On another note, there's a link at the bottom. List NIU vs Buffalo as the 28th best game of the year.

FCS football has not hurt ISU all time record enrollment. You guys need to realize that football is not driving the bus on student enrollment. We have just experience the golden age of NIU football in the last ten years and our enrollment is at an all time low.

So hiring Thomas Hammock was all part of the master plans for going FCS, huh? And we must fight the good fight against Frazier, lol. You crazy01-wingedeagle 03-lmfao

RE: SBNation commentary on FCS drops from FBS incl. MAC
The savings, when all things are weighed in, are nominal at best dropping to FCS. Stay FBS (duh), get some Saturday games back, ignore the clickbait drop-down articles written by Ohio State fans playing god with programs they don't care about.

University of Illinois sucks at football, big time. Lets talk bout them dropping down to save a few bits, not the NIU's that have built some success at this level.

RE: SBNation commentary on FCS drops from FBS incl. MAC
I think a vibrant football program and athletics department in general can contribute to increased enrollment. However it needs to be interwoven into the overall culture of the university which sadly I don’t think happens at all at NIU. Maybe Hammock can make some inroads there for football but you cannot expect to completely change the culture overnight.

I remember there was an idea in one of the decks Frazier put out which moved school offices into the stadium and suggested using the stadium as start and end point for campus tours. I thought it was a great idea but don’t think it every went anywhere. It seems most ideas NIU has put out on recent years never get off the paper.

The biggest difference to me right now between NIU and ISU is that ISU seems like a school that is investing in its future and moving forward. NIU seems like a school that is stuck in neutral and searching for an identity. ISU’s current fundraising campaign has raised nearly $150 million. There is a vision there and they are executing on it.

Stop responding to him and he can't hijack a thread. I know it is hard to find diehard fans and I would always look past what he said in the past, but it is like he is on repeat for every topic now and really gets old fast.

RE: SBNation commentary on FCS drops from FBS incl. MAC
One day people will learn how to use the internet to look up things like a school's endowment, how much money sports means to a school vs. academics, how much money is generated by research/donations/endowment vs. sports. Many have no concept how much money is generated for schools like Texas and Ohio St. through football vs. research. It's easy to see how Ivy League schools have endowments in the billions. But OSU (4 billion) and Texas (31 billion) didn't get their from kids loving the football team and donations from sports boosters alone.

And yes, Illinois has an endowment of 3.billion. My niece goes there, my brother did. I can assure you my niece, who attends football games, sure didn't go there to cheer on Lovie. She already has internships on campus (they have dozens of companies on campus in buildings s. of stadium) and will likely be set through that co. at a large bio-tech firm upon graduation. If they dropped football tomorrow, if a law was passes to ban football I think all of them would survive.

I see NIU included in the schools that do not scan tickets...My ticket has always been scanned. I believe that NIU attendance figures are pretty accurate....Anybody got a different take?

They scan your ticket or print out to make sure it is not a copy. What they do with the scan information, we can only guess.

I feel like NIU is one of the accurate schools, that publish butts in the seats. EMU, and some other P5/G5 schools 100% pad their numbers based on televised visuals, using season tickets sold, day-of-game tickets sold to Pepsico (EMU), creative Pig10 math, etc..

I'd honestly rather NIU pad their numbers until 100% of FBS is reporting butts-in-seats accurately.
