Football participation significantly declines in CA
Interesting article on the rapid decline of high school football players in the State of California.

Not just california, it's all over. The risk of closed head injuries and ligament tears is too pervasive, boys are opting out for sports with less high-speed contact.

Not only that, but say you make it to the pros. The NFL is pretty much the worst league to be a pro in unless you're a top 10% player. Shortest career, non-guaranteed contract. No other Big 4 is worse if you're a roster player (ruling out the minor leagues here since the NFL doesn't have one)

Can't blame the parents in dissuading their kids to shy away from the sport. However I suspect it'll remain popular among families from rougher or poorer areas who will assume risks. The chance at a free college scholarship is a golden ticket out of poverty, and certainly if you're among the <1% who go on to pros.

Certainly immigration has changed Californians' interests over the years, where in birth countries, soccer is the preferred sport over American football.

They'll run into kids who don't want to be 2-3 time zones from home. But I think the PAC-12 could still make some recruiting in-roads into the Big XII and B1G cornbelt and rustbelt territories. You don't have to be USC to sell living by the beach or among beautiful topography, especially now when the Midwest is in an ice box. There's still a lot of allure in living on the West Coast or in Arizona for 4 years.

And yet the concussion rate is higher in girls soccer, and the death rate is higher in baseball.

The concussion rate is higher, but it's widely believed it's not the major impacts causing the CTE problems in former football players, but rather the small impacts that happen play to play (like lineman impact, blocker impact, etc).

Great point. Soccer is crying for a technological resolution to the 'heading' problem. Wouldn't surprise me to see some sort of light helmet introduced to address concussions.

This. Small, repeated blows to the head cause as much, if not more, damage to the brain. You can see this in boxing, where 30 jabs will eventually knock a guy unconscious. Doesn't take a homerun hit.

What's worse is the 2nd, 3rd, 4th concussion. People can survive one concussion without any side effects. But repeated head injuries cause serious, lasting effects.
