WAC basketball week 13
Moving on to Week 13...
Jarkel Joiner received the WAC POTW. He was very impressive in the game against CBU; nullifying Acquaah's offensive efforts to put the Lancers over the top.
Tuesday
UC Santa Cruz @ Cal State Bakersfield
Wednesday
Cal Baptist @ Utah Valley
Thursday
Chicago State @ UT Rio Grande Valley
UM Kansas City @ New Mexico State
Saturday
UM Kansas City @ UT Rio Grande Valley
Chicago State @ New Mexico State
Grand Canyon @ Cal State Bakersfield
Cal Baptist @ Seattle
The home team "should" win this week but I think Saturday will be interesting. UMKC is capable of beating UTRGV. If GCU can withstand CSUB's defensive pressure and play even on the boards, they can beat the Runners on the road. And, it is a must win for Seattle U; who are playing a shorter rotation than CBU.

Wait - Runners over the top, right?
As you say the home teams "should" win but none of them look like sure things except maybe CSU @ NMSU.

No I meant "Lancer". Up to this point, Acquaah has been the frontrunner for WAC POTY. He has carried CBU to wins that they could never hoped to win without him. I was just pointing out that on that night Joiner was the best guard on the court; putting up 34 points. Acquaah was also outstanding putting up 27 points but it was not enough. Hence, Joiner nullified Acquaah.

Thanks Pistol for posting this. I agree that the home teams should all win this weekend. I am hoping that GCU is able to pull off the upset though. The UMKC @ NMSU game should be interesting to. I do not think UMKC will pull off a major upset but they may keep it close for awhile if they can keep NMSU from getting offensive rebounds.

Man, that's a bummer. Hoping Ivan has a quick and complete recovery. I've really enjoyed watching him work in the few Aggie games I have seen this season.

Whats the status on Oscar Frayer? I sure wished both teams would be at full strength when they play each other next week but does not look like its gonna happen.

No update beyond he is not likely be available against CSUB. Following the injury, he received treatment in the tunnel before sitting on the end of the bench with what looked like a heavily taped upper-ankle (poss. high ankle sprain?), before returning to the locker room and coming out with a walking boot.
Again, I haven't heard any official diagnosis. Everything has been very NHL-esque, only calling it a "leg ingury". Four years of college ball really isn't a lot of time to play, so I hate to see any of these kids lose time to injury. Was happy to see Johnny McCants get back on the court so quickly after his pre-season injury, and hoping the same for Ivan & Oscar.

Utah Valley beats Cal Baptist 79-62. Milan Acquaah had 20 points and 7 assists in a losing effort.

On the surface that looks good but he shot 6-24 to get his points. I still don't know how we lost to CBU. I'm still pissed about that game. Being undefeated at the halfway point would have been huge, especially next week when we face the toughest road trip of the year with CSUB and GCU. IMO would be a minor miracle if we sweep both those teams.

NMSU has had a few games where their offense has escaped them. NMSU had 29 more field goal attempt than CBU but only made ONE more field goal; shooting only 31%. Ultimately, time ran out on NMSU and CBU held us off from the free-throw line; making 32-36 from the free throw line. After that loss, I was irate. I couldn't stomach watching any basketball for days. NMSU has a lot of good players but no one we can count on consistently to make plays when times are tough.

Exactly. NMSU has a lot of good players, but no one player that scares you. I agree, time ran out on NMSU at CBU and CBU did not miss from the line. That won’t happen again in Las Cruces, but it does prove that anybody can get beat in the WAC. Chris Jans did what he could, but sometimes your players just have to learn the hard way.
Milan Acquaah is a good player. He did not shoot well tonight, but he had seven assists, six rebounds and four steals. He is the kind of player that can takeover in a close game and help get the win. I think Carlos Johnson of GCU is also that kind of player, maybe even better. That is what NMSU is missing on offense this season.

NMSU has a lot of guys that step up and really have some outstanding games, but definitely not one or two guys everyone knows to look out for. Sometimes it's a weakness, but sometimes it's a strength.

Aside from being ice cold from the field, NMSU allowed Aqua to go of for 36 points. In the second half, we ran double teams at him or trapped him and that seemed to work. But we didn't do it every time and when we didn't, he scored.
Another huge weakness NMSU has is defending big guards like Aqua. Our guards are 6'2" or smaller and skinny. Recall that Clemson's two huge guards killed us in the NCAA's last year.

NMSU slaughters CSU by 44 points (83-39). 14 players play 10 or more minutes with all but one scoring. Total domination. Congrats to the Aggies!

Seattle U will be without 2 starters completely, and the entire 7-man rotation will be playing hurt/out tonight. Means (wrist), Brown (groin), and Carter (flu) will play through injury. Kavas, Delante Jones out. 6th man Nettles game time decision, 7th man Grigsby out. This will be rough
