CBU emulates GCU?
Mid-Major Madness had an article on the recent GCU-CBU game, and how CBU is trying to follow GCU's blueprint for a successful transition to DI. If you can get past the non-related picture and the numerous typos, the article is interesting.
Will CBU-GCU become a bigger rivalry than GCU-NMSU?

Maybe more like "actual" rivalry. NMSU already has two rivals, in UNM and UTEP. Aggie fans will also point to the overall series record and tell you there is no rivalry, even though the LOOOOVE to talk about GCU and it's fans far more than we see them talk about the Lobos and Miners. The GCU/NMSU "thing" that we have is more a conference rivalry of convenience: Aggies are and have been the best in the WAC. Lopes want to be the best, and have been the only conference member applying consistent pressure since joining. If CSUB had been at the top of the WAC since joining, instead of NMSU, the "thing" would be with the Runners instead.

If GCU can't forge an in-state rivalry with NAU (which doesn't appear to be happening any time soon), I think Cal Baptist might be the next best natural rival. When the announcement of CBU joining the WAC happened, I remember someone suggesting it could be the WAC's version of the Holy War. I don't see any reason for true animosity between GCU and CBU at this point, but still welcome what could be a blossoming rivalry.

There is a developing rivalry forming between NMSU and GCU. "If" GCU beats NMSU in the WAC Tournament, a rivalry will heat up. Right now, I think certain Aggie fans take issue with the GCU propaganda machine. A novice basketball fans would think GCU is the kingpin of the WAC simply by the antics of the "Havoc" and the NBA styled production of GCU's games. Some Aggie fans just want to remind Lope fans that on the court, NMSU is still the Top Dog. Also, Aggie fans can see the money is flowing at GCU in an attempt to change those fortunes.

"If" true, then "certain" and "some" Aggie fans should question their affection for CBU but disdain for GCU, because the Lancers are doing it the same way the Lopes have. As the article and ProfScott point out, CBU is following the GCU blueprint to a "T", which includes the "propaganda", "antics", and the money "flowing" to bolster and sustain a fledgling D1 program.

Back to the original question, the day that we call GCU/CBU (or anyone other than NMSU, really) a true rivalry really can't come soon enough. The Lopes are forced to call NMSU a rival due to a lack of any other options. If you can be with the one you hate, hate the one you're with.

Good article. These two schools are rivals, especially in recruiting of students, athletes and non-athletes. I am sure they have learned from the success of GCU, but there are things that CBU does that they have always done. They are not GCU-West.

I really agreed with the three takeaways from the game, particularly regarding Carlos Johnson. He could be a difference maker in games in March.

So CBU was a for profit? NO. Does CBU have 70000 online students? NO Has CBU ever been a For Profit? NO. Not seeing the similarities. I do think CBU sees you as a rival. I was surprised by the sellout and the zeal CBU fans had for the GCU game. I also forget that if a school has enthusiastic fans they are trying to be like GCU. Got it. (eyeroll). Didn't you guys play in the same conference when you were D2? Were you rivals back then?

RE: CBU emulates GCU?
Seattle has $hit all over themselves this year. GCU has played really good in conference. Playing a real OCC schedule better prepared them than playing crap teams at home bloating Majerles wins. Looks like the self proclaimed hottest coach in college basketball has brought CSUB back to life although squeaking out victories at home vs. UMKC and Chicago State have me a little confused about their team.
