Perfect week to be in Florida...

I can hear the discussion, "Coach Hammock, want me to make the rounds in South Florida this week? No, I have book the trip down there, it is important for me to be the first contact."

And the next sentence was "While I am in Florida, I need you to make personal contact with several coaches in Wisconsin."

Very positive statements about Hammock and his coaches in the article, but it's also interesting to note that the H.S. coaches who were interviewed (from Maine South, Fenwick, Barrington, New Trier and Vernon Hills) are very clear about NIU already having a strong relationship with them and major presence in Chicago and Illinois due to past recruiting efforts. Clearly they are referring to the Carey staff, because recruiting Illinois heavily and well was one of RC's goals. I like the fact that Hammock is inheriting a solid recruiting foundation in NIU's home state rather than starting from zero.

Carey did a nice job of restoring his reputation among Chicago area HS coaches in the last couple years. I think the staff got a little starry-eyed on the heels of the Orange Bowl. It opened some doors (especially in other parts of the country) that weren't open before. However, after a few years, we can see that a lot of the southern guys haven't worked out (Hey, we hate the Dekalb winters. How do you think they feel?) The three-hour radius is always the lifeblood of the program. It has to be.

NIU will always go south for skill position guys, just as everyone else does, but there's also a 20 year legacy of the type of guys that succeed here. And the biggest part of that is Chicago-area players.

Oh, and the big boys from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Give me all of them.

Didn't the Chicago Public league coaches have a problem with our coaches and recruiters a few years back? Or was that in basketball?

And unfortunately Monty failed to try to change that. His staff was basically from Michigan and they failed to work on improving those relationships

Fixing the relationship with the basketball coaches in chicago isn't as easy as you are making it out to be. Have you noticed that none of the in-state schools (including Notre Dame) don't recruit Chicago very well? Do you think it's because they don't want to? DePaul is IN Chicago. So is Chicago State and they're the worst D1 program in the country.

The coaches in chicago prioritize big name schools as opposed to what is best for the player or what the player prefers. They will actively push kids away from schools like NIU or Northwestern or DePaul if there is even a hint of an interest from a more notable school. This has been going on since the days of Sonny Cox at King and continue now with the likes of Nick Irvin at Morgan Park and the rest. They all fall in line with each other.

Patton took a poor relationship and destroyed it publically. Monty was given garbage with little to no chance at fixing it because the chicago coaches couldn't care less if it ever gets fixed. They can't tout to their area recruits that they have a kid starting at NIU. So, it doesn't matter to them.

Monty has two kids from suburbs coming next year. Facts are stubborn things.

What -- IF ANY -- proof do you have for this theory?
How do you know what is "best for the player or what the player prefers"? Maybe some of these kids want to go where it's warmer, maybe they're interested in a major and the out-of-state school has a stronger rep in that area, maybe there's a connection you're not aware of. Contending that "the coaches in Chicago" "actively push kids away from schools like NIU or Northwestern or DePaul" sounds more like prejudice on your part. In reality, there are more than a few NIU alums coaching various high school sports who say some Huskie coaches are not receptive when they simply suggest someone should take a look at their athlete.
We all want the Huskies to be successful, but but this type of "conspiracy" thinking is very naive.

Can we not hijack the football hc thread with a basketball arguement? Keep thinking there is recruiting news...

Recruiting city kids is all about the money. Money for the AAU coaches, money for the HS coaches, money for the college assistant coaches, money for the parents and posse and money from the shoe companies.

https://www.sbnation.com/college-basketb...e-duke-lsu

Christian Dawkinsis was the focal point of the payoffs. He is the son of a former assistant coach of MM.
MM has stayed clear of the cesspool of basketball recruiting. MM may be an average coach but his hands are clean. Thank God the NIU administration have told our coaches to run a clean program.

My proof. Well, I work in CPS. And know a lot of people. Also, a good friend and colleague of mine played basketball in CPS and also played at one of the large city colleges and he's quite connected within people who know and coach and played in CPS.

Take it for what it's worth, obviously. If you think all within the CPS basketball coaches is all honorable and whatnot, go on ahead thinking it. That's your prerogative. Teams like NIU have a much better shot at recruiting the suburbs than they do the city.

Regardless, it was super informative. Thank you for helping me understand why NIU hasn't cracked that nut open.

This is a pretty well known fact if you follow college basketball at all. Coach k, self, Calipari, have kissed or paid off the right asses to get a seat at the table. Local schools are shut out. It's like old school machine politics in the public league.

Yea, I've heard that also, from somebody closely related to a division I coach.
