Oh yeah I forgot, we lost to the Tribe. Also, a switch to Zone in the long run might be help put a finger in the leaking dam but in order to play effective zone you need to have solid M-M fundamentals. By the way, UNCW's Zone has given up even more PPP than man so far (1.11).

Last year?
No, these are up to the day stats for 2018-19. (22 games)

I was referring to the fact that we beat William and Mary.
Pardon me. My mistake. I omitted the word 'almost'.

Gotcha. 04-cheers

Jerry was great at UNCW. However, once he left... his career took a sharp decline. In his final 5 years coaching at DePaul, his teams overall were 59-80, and 20-51 (.282) in conference.

He couldn't recruit. The man always has been able to teach D. Answer me this, could it be worse?

Could it be? The answer is yes. In '08-09, Wainwright when 0-18 in conference and followed that up with an 0-3 start in conference the following year before he was fired hardly into the season.

This isn't me trashing Wainwright either. He did an amazing job putting our program on the map, but like I said... some things don't age well, and it's clear his coaching style didn't age well with all the NCAA changes. Let's just leave his success here in the past where it belongs.

10 PPG less in that terrible season than us(in a better conf). Not asking for him to be a HC, just asking for help guide the D!
His offense that year barely averaged 60 PPG.

Hey, i'd love to see us go around the second time pressing and falling into a zone against pretty much every team. BUT, if McGrath is reluctant, Towson is the perfect team to give it a "trial run" and see if his worst fears of playing primarily zone are just his imagination.

What's he got to lose?

Eddie Biedenbach is also retired in Wilmington. I know he was brought on the staff during the last season of Buzz, but you can't really hold that against him IMO. That ship was way beyond repair when he got there. You will be hard pressed to find a person that knows more about the game than Biedenbach and has had connections throughout NC for 50 plus year. He's had success this decade at UNC-Asheville. He would be better fit than Wainwright. Bringing back a legend to be an Assistant wouldn't benefit anybody, also wouldn't be fair for CB... especially if it didn't work out.

Agree. I'd also wonder if those numbers HAWKING provided stating that our zone #'s are worse than our M2M numbers (ppp allowed) would simply be due to our team not being in the zone as much therefore being slightly uncomfortable/out of sorts in it. Let them play an entire game of zone against Towson and see what happens. I'm on board.

I'm with it too. It can't be much worse than our defense is now. Gotta do something.

It's a very small sample. Also, if we go zone and are scored on, we abandon immediately, thereby skewing the numbers high.

Agree about Eddie, disagree about Jerry. "Bringing in a legend" who could solve your defensive problems would benefit EVERYONE!

Gotta agree with that logic if JW is brought in just on the defensive end of things. Some nostalgia wouldn’t be bad for the fans, and a sharp defensive mind would wholly benefit everyone if it works out well. In the event it doesn’t work out, you haven’t tarnished a coaching legacy for anyone.

Jerry recruited well. Rodney Terry & Jerry brought good talent to play in his system. Brad Brownell was the x's & o's. Jerry was successful because of the people he surrounded himself with and that is the mark of a good, if not great, head coach.

RE: DEFENSIVE STATS RANKED NATIONALLY
Adding my 2 cents, very few coaches at our level (CAA) have the guts to step aside and bring in a specialty coach to help where they are weak. This is especially true in a first time head coaching job and if you are looking at someone who was successful at UNCW. That would take quite the step back in his young career to make that call. Don't see it happening. Drexel called for the same with Bruiser. For him to bring in someone to coach the offense, and it never happened. Coaches have pretty big egos in general. What you guys are asking, may be obvious, but lacks a chance at happening in reality.

Yes it is easy to argue that the best coaches know their weaknesses and address those issues to mitigate them. Few at our level actually do that.

If he could solve it yes, what if he can't. I can't see McGrath leading the let's hire Wainwright charge, it would have to be someone outside the staff but within the Athletic Department. That could present an added pressure on McGrath. If McGrath is comfortable with bringing in Wainwright, I'm all for it. I just don't see Jerry and C.B. seeing eye to eye on many things. I think Biedenbach would be a better fit if the route was a retired coach that resides in Wilmington. Regardless, we're probably just talking hypotheticals anyway.

Unfortunately, this is spot on. I hope McGrath would at least consider it but there is nothing to signify he will.

While i agree, what's more of a step back, taking a shot at improvement, or getting fired because you can't produce results?

Exactly, his weakness at DePaul was recruiting and was made even more apparent that DePaul was in the old Big East which was nose to nose with the ACC in terms of quality teams. After DePaul he went on to be an assistant at Marquette under Buzz Williams and Rodney Terry at Fresno who both had NCAA Tourney teams in his time there. He would be perfect for us right now.

For a guy who was an assistant as long as he was before getting his first gig, I think you know this answer. It is all about risk and acceptable risk. This type of shot at improvement is too risky, because if it fails and he is out of a job, when will the next one come calling? Most are willing to fall on their own sword, because it meant doing things their way. Taking a big chance like that and it costing you your job wont sit well, since you would have fallen on the sword but it wasn't fully your idea.

I wont comment on that. As a Drexel fan that is not my place to comment on coaching of other teams, however I will say that goes back to the ego comment that most coaches have. They would rather it not work their way than not work another person's way. Acceptable risk.
