Our Owls are not in Baseball America's preseason projected NCAA tournament field of 64.

CUSA teams in are USM (#2 regional seed) & LaTech (#3 seed).

Hosts include Vandy (#1 national seed), LSU (#2), Stanford (#7), Texas Tech (#8) & Baylor.

UT, A&M, UH & TCU are #2 regional seeds

Oof. Time to prove them wrong and get the program back on track.

D1Baseball is the only one that has us making the post-season. Everyone else has us finishing 4th in the conference.

Bragga announced the rotation as Canterino on Friday, Moss on Saturday, and either Parthasarathy or Kravetz on Sunday. The odd man out will serve as a “key situation” guy on weekends, not as the midweek starter.

This is all from the Thresher.

Interesting. Either Jackson or Evan make for a good change of pace from the power RHP arms of Canterino and Moss. We need two midweek starters for the first month of the season. I'm assuming Greenwood will be one. I also cannot believe that the "odd man out" for Sunday starter would only pitch in relief on weekends. That would be a waste of one of our better pitchers. And as I've said before, if he's not going to be the Sunday starter, i want Jefferies as the jack-of-all-trades in the bullpen; not as a midweek starter. Of course, we could use him as a mid-weeker for the first several weeks when we face Arizona, Texas, SHS, UH and TCU.

When does Rice start using an "opener" like the Rays (and a few other MLB teams)?

* I am joking, I don't want Rice to use an "opener"

I thought about that the other day. The truth is that college has been there by necessity for many years; you get to your mid-week game where you have a 5 game week, or your 7th game in 4 days in the conference or NCAA pool play tournament, and everyone always talked about a staff by committee for that day. You send a guy out there who cannot go more than 2 or 3 innings, and just keep rolling guys out there for whatever their limited arms have left.

MLB just does that on a tactical level.

An interesting approach if mid-week games mattered as much as conference is pitching your best pitcher for the first 3 innings (he starts the game) on Wednesday and then on either Saturday or Sunday. That leverages him against the best hitters, as unless he is perfect for 3 innings (in which case you think about a 4th inning), he is back up to the top of the order in the 3rd inning, so he leaves the game with 6 innings to go, but with the best hitters with 2 ABs already. I am sure there are 8,000 critics to this, but if leveraging your best guy against the best hitters is the goal, that does it.

Did anyone go to the intrasquads on Friday or Saturday (w/RBI Club tailgate) and can give a report on how Canterino and Moss fared in their final outing before opening weekend? No recaps posted from Roger Tower.

Also, for those attending the RBI Club reception afterwards, did Bragga provide any insights as to lineup and pitching rotation (other than weekend starters)?

Probably Parthasarathy Sunday. He said we'd use others and then worry about UT later. Infield set, but no depth. 6 outfielders for the 3 spots. 2 have separated so far. Didn't say which ones but probably Cox and Gneitling. Matt seemed pleased with the pitching, but there are lots of roles to fill. Guess we'll just have to watch and see who progresses. He said we'll have 11 recruits each year. We have 9 so far for the '19 class and he'll go slowly in getting the other 2. We have 8 for the '20 class and he's very excited about them. It was very cold yesterday morning, and after a good practice Friday yesterday's was bad. Didn't hear how well we threw. Pitch counts in play early in season. Probably 80-90 for Matt on Friday. Will call pitches from the dugout, but if pitcher really wants to change pitches he won't get chewed out. But he can't change every pitch.

Thanks, Bob. See you Thursday night at the WBB vs. FIU game.

And I thought sliding on turf infields was an adventure.

RE: Spring Intrasquads (Baseball) Start Today
Still no word on how Canterino, Moss, Kravetz and Parthasarathy did in their final outings last weekend, but Roger did post the recap for today's final scrimmage before they play for real on Friday...

https://rubpa.rice.edu/Content.aspx?id=4294977740

Esquivel, Plum, Lewis, Schragger and Tyner all had quality short outings on the mound. Comeaux continues his impressive Spring with a pair of doubles. Good to see A.Dunlap, DiCaprio and Edwards all starting to produce at the plate. My guess is it will take the trio another couple weeks to shake off the rust of their extended absence, but they appear to be slowly coming around.
