Exclamation 2019 Big Ten football schedule: softest EVER?
FBSchedules commented on the Big Ten 2019 Football schedule this off season... it's softer than a mountain of pillows! Five B1G teams - including both Ohio State and Wisconsin - don't play a single P5 non-conference opponent, and two teams - Indiana and Minnesota - play no P5's AND get an FCS game too. I wrote about it on ACCFootballRx and came to this conclusion myself:

Quote:The Big Ten has played a very easy non-conference schedule for many years, but the 2019 schedule may be the softest schedule they've ever played as a group. Just remember this: if the Big Ten Championship Game comes down to Ohio State vs. Wisconsin, no matter what the teams' overall record, they will have ZERO P5 non-conference wins between them!

Given that a Buckeyes/Badgers CCG is a VERY real possibility... will that result in the Big Ten missing the playoffs yet again?

RE: 2019 Big Ten football schedule: softest EVER?
That’ll be Wisconsin’s 3rd straight year without a P5. Blueblood Ohio State not scheduling one either.

I was briefly looking at Week 1 games next year and couldn’t find any good ones in the midwest aside from UCLA/Cincinnati, Toledo/Kentucky, & Notre Dame/Louisville (Labor Day). Lots of duds in B1G stadiums.

Penn State has a P5 opponent every year until 2025. This year is the end of the four series with Pitt. A home series with Auburn, West Virginia and Virginia Tech will follow.

Idaho is on the schedule this year but I don’t know if that was scheduled when they still were in FBS.

I seen where a school from another conference has Old Dominion, Furman and Rhode Island on their non conference slate next year. As always though, "it's the best way to schedule with the new CFP format now". You know, what everybody has been saying the last few years? Just win your games and get in!

As soon as the BIG does it though, "oh how can they possibly make the playoffs with no non-con P5 game. Well, every school in the BIG plays 9 P5 games a year no matter what.

Look, I get it, I would rather Ohio State play P5 teams every game but this is the new playoff era and here we are with "cupcakes" to help the win column.

Is the Big 10 still playing 9 conference games? If so I don't have a big problem with it.

I'd like to see the overall S.O.S. of the Big 10 member schools compared to last year's S.O.S. of N.D., and I'm talking about viewing that schedule from the conclusion of the regular season's vantage point and not the pre season rankings.

I think the rule should be set that your school will not be considered if you play fewer than 9P games, and that extra weight will be given to those who play 10, but that playing 10 is still subordinate to your overall record. It seems to me this would be a fairer baseline. And by P schools I mean specifically members of the PAC/Big 12/B1G/SEC/ACC plus Notre Dame. I'm not talking about declaring Army or Navy to be a "P" like game, or even B.Y.U..

We only care about the SOS of contenders, though. The SOS of Indiana or Vanderbilt doesn't matter if the point is to compare potential playoff teams.

Yes the BIG plays 9 conference games still.

Strength of schedule, correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Michigan, Indiana, Nebraska and Northwestern had better SOS than Notre Dame last year. Is this what you're asking, JR? I'll have to look and see for sure.

Plus, I believe 9 of the 14 BIG teams play 10 P5 games in 2019 and Purdue might play 11?

TRUE, but then, nobody's confusing Virginia Tech with a playoff team this year...

This argument was predictable (oh, yeah, I DID predict it!):

Quote:I'm sure some Big Ten fan boy is going to be quick to tell me that it doesn't matter... that Big Ten teams actually play more total P5 games than the ACC or the SEC thanks to their 9-game conference schedule (true)... but they'd be wrong because they're overlooking a key difference...

The Big Ten may play more P5 games, but they play far fewer P5 teams - and it's the linkages to other conferences which really is the only way to accurately compare teams from different leagues which don't play each other in the regular season...

Since Ohio State will play ZERO P5 non-conference games in 2019, they can only be compared to contenders from other conferences by their record against other Big Ten teams who themselves have P5 linkages. If we total up these "second-hand" P5 opponents we get the following list of Buckeye opponents' opponents:
Iowa State
Syracuse
Notre Dame
Arizona St
Colorado
Stanford
Pitt
Vanderbilt
TCU
Boston College
UCLA (via Cincinnati)
Hey, that's not a bad list...

Now let's look at Clemson's opponents' opponents:
Auburn
Arkansas
Alabama
Ole Miss
Mississippi St
Georgia
LSU
N Carolina
Missouri
Kentucky
Georgia
Florida
Tennessee
Vanderbilt
Maryland
Notre Dame
Kansas
Rutgers
West Virginia
S Carolina
Texas A&M
That's 20 second-hand P5 opponents for Clemson vs. 11 for Ohio State. Keep in mind that Tigers also play Texas A&M and South Carolina themselves...

https://accfootballrx.blogspot.com/2019/...-2019.html

SERIOUS QUESTION: How does anyone expect to be able to compare Ohio State versus, say, Texas this year? The Longhorns will have played LSU plus 9 Big XII teams, while the Buckeyes will have the same 9 conference games plus... Cincinnati.

Maybe if Ohio State beats Cincy who beats UCLA... but then again, Texas plays Oklahoma who ALSO plays UCLA, so...

The problem isn't the general teams... It's the specific potential champions that SOS really matters for.

Serious question, why do Louisville, Syracuse and VT fans ride the back of Clemson? Real easy for you to argue with me when I root for a TEAM and you root for a CONFERENCE. See the difference now "conference fanboy"? Or as you ACC fans like to say, "are you just a bit butthurt" with facts? Of course "just like you predicted" about 9 conference game argument, because it's true!

Yep. I think Delany is taking his shot at N.D.'s scheduling, and the fact that the SEC and ACC only play 8 conference games. When I say Delany I'm not referencing a public statement, just noting that behind the doors the go ahead was probably given for this.

Personally I would love to see an end to OOC games between the P conferences and for each conference to play at least 10 games. Doing this would give us two huge things most P fans want to see: more games against rivals and neighbors which will be good for season ticket sales and ease of travel, and it enhances the post season tremendously when a few early season OOC games no longer become a barometer for how strong or weak a conference is. This alone will place more emphasis upon champions meeting.

As someone interested in realignment, this kind of move would also refocus realignment on schools seeking meaningful games in conferences they have more in common with, and since the market model is dead except for T3, it means regional and cultural fit along with content value take the forefront in any future realignment.

Some schools who have an arch rival in another conference might have to seriously rethink their choices. In the end putting the emphasis on your conference play will be healthy for everyone.

I don't expect many to agree with me on this, but I think it's time our presidents and commissioners think about it. It will drive interest, sell tickets, and make the game a bit more popular again.

Heck yes I agree with this! I'm all about more conference games, make it 11 a year while we are at it!

I think I heard that when Texas played Georgia, they played them before Texas A&M has played them as a conference partner. A&M has been in the SEC, what 7 years now? And has yet to play everybody in their own conference yet? I have a problem with this and so should everybody in the SEC. That's the point of being in a conference together, right, to play each other?

Anyways, I also think the BIG did 9 games for the reason I mentioned plus it gives more opportunities to air conference games on BTN.

I would love for all conferences to go to at least 9 conference games. I think it's important and who wouldn't want to see more Texas A&M vs Georgia or VT vs Clemson type games every year? I sure as hell know I would, games deciding conference outcomes and conference championships!

I could live with this - but ONLY if conference champs were given autobids. With ZERO non-conference games, it would become utterly impossible to compare teams from two different conferences - there would be no point of reference! (and don't say "Who beat directional U by a bigger margin?" or "Who looks best in their uniforms?" [so-called 'Eye test'] - that's all meaningless). If you want to go 10 or 11 conference games (or 12 - why not? forces everyone to play 6 home/6 away games!) with autobids for conference champs -- then we REALLY have "every game is important" again.

Rutgers may have the hardest SOS in the Big 10. We don't get to play ourselves!

I would be perfectly fine with 12 SEC games if we could convert the Spring Game to a preseason game against a smaller in state school who needs the payday. That becomes the all important 7th home ticket in the season book.

Then champs only makes all the sense in the world. And the whole nation would be watching trying to figure out who indeed had the better conference. Furthermore it would enhance the bowls again.

Just do 12 conference games and you don;t have to worry about the Big Slow getting exposed as overrated until the postseason.

The B1G champ will play 1 more P5 next year than Notre Dame did this year. What is the issue?

2019 Big Ten football schedule: softest EVER?
Nothing new; Big ten rarely schedules difficult. They usually prove they are over rated during bowl season.

Meh, I dont know about Big Slow if you're talking about a conference as a whole. I mean the team known as the slowest, (Wisconsin), has had their way with those Super Duper, speedy, lightning fast ACC schools lately.

Now if you want to talk about individual schools? Yep, Ohio State looked really slow against Clemson. I know this is what you really wanted to say but for some reason you grouped a whole conference into it.
