THE AAC Brand of Basketball at a glance
I always like to look and see how the AAC stacks up against other leagues around the country. Currently we are the 7th best league according to kenpom.
That said, Kenpom also shows how the league stacks up in other style of play categories:
A couple things we can interpret from the data:
- We aren't an offensive or aesthetically pleaseing league
- We foul a lot. Our Free Throw attempts to FG attempts is 2nd of 32 leagues
- We block shots.. 3rd best block rate
- We have good point guard play. 55.4% of our made baskets are assisted. Good for 2nd
- We suck suck suck suck suck at 3 point shooting. 29th is bad news
- Were in the upper 3rd of Tempo. Obviously Cincinnati, Houston and UCF, hold back the league in this regard
- We have great thieves. 7th in steal rate. Overall the leagues defense is top notch
- In a league where we miss a lot, we offensive rebound pretty well as a league
- Home Court Advantage is HUGE in this league. Were number 1 in home court advantage. The home team has won 28 out of 38 games at home.
- We rank very highly in blow out wins compared to other conferences. Tulane needs to take some blame in that. and only 7 of our 38 games were less than 4 points or OT. And UC has played in 3 of the 7

Not sure a slower tempo is a bad thing. i mean the ones "holding" the league back are also the top teams in the conference.
Also, since we are 7th...does that mean the PAC is ahead of us? if so, then i'm not sure i can take this stacking serious.

you could make the case that the league doesn't have good guard play- only #19 in turnovers, and the worst in the major 7 conferences.
As far as blowouts. Part of it is the way the conference configured the schedule. ECU for instance has played all 4 top teams. Only has a play back game with Houston left. Tulane has played already 2 of the 4 top teams. Have 3 games left vs top teams(they get Temple 2x). Meanwhile, while that's happened, only had 2 games between the top 4 teams so far. Still got 9 games left bteween those teams. So the schedule is definitely backloaded quite a lot.

The pac 12 is ahead of us.
But they are ahead of us because of how poorly ECU and Tulane were in the non conference.
They sucked.
The pac 12 has Zero teams 300+ or worse. We do (Tulane). Tulane is 60 spots worse than then worst team in the Pac 12.
Do I think the top of our league is better? Absolutely. But Tulane and ECU push the league back.
Also... as bad as the pac 12 is... they still have 8 teams in the top 100. The American is down to 6 in the top 100.
As for Tempo.... Its just people want to watch fast people basketball. If you want to be a fun league, its best to play a more uptempo style. That said, I have no issue with playing a defensive first slower deliberate pace.

Sure. But this is a snapshot in time. Its not a prediction of what will come, just how we've faired so far.
This league will have a lot of blow outs though as we have 6 teams in the top 100 who will all play Tulane at least once and sometimes twice. Thats a potential blowout up to 12 times a year and then you have you unexpected blowouts like UC vs Tulsa, Tulsa vs SMU Etc
As for guard play... Its a 2-way street. We play incredible defense in this league, We have 4 top 50 defenses in the league. its one of those things where we're loose with the ball but because of the defense in the league being so good, you also have to make good passes to get the defense moving and create a lot of assists.

Memphis doesn't really fit the mold well, except the sucking at 3 pointers part.

But with the way the league schedules it, the number of potential blowouts with Tulane is only like 8. They don't play Cincy, UCF, Houston, or UConn twice. That's not on accident. Tulane is already done playing 3 of those 4 teams- and has already played 5 of the 8 games they're going to play vs those teams.
